Welsh Wills Index (Prior To 1858)
The Glamorgan FHS holds a copy on microfiche of the Abstracts and Indexes of Wills prior to 1858 deposited at the National Library of Wales at Aberystwyth which was prepared by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints some years ago.
The Abstracts mainly consist of the names of those mentioned in the Will or Admon (e.g. executors, witnesses. legatees, bondsmen), and may also give relationship to the Testator, place-names of properties and the value of the estate.
The scope of the Indexes varies according to the Diocese. The Glamorgan parishes to the west of Cadoxton-juxta-Neath and Cilybebyll were in the Diocese of St. David’s, the rest being in Llandaff. By far the most comprehensive details available relate to St David's Diocese; for Llandaff Diocese the coverage is disappointingly limited, in both the period covered and the nature of the material, since only Admons have been included. (Admons are Letters of Administration granted where no Will existed, or the executors named in a Will were unable or unwilling to act - in these cases details of the Will itself are often included.)
Coverage for each Diocese is as follows:
St David's 1564 to 1653 and 1660 to 1858 Llandaff 1746 to 1832
