Hollyhock Press

Hollyhock Press is a small publishing house whose goal is to bring you genealogical and historic public records of several counties along the Virginia-West Virginia border, primarily Bath and Highland. We understand that many genealogists do not have the resources to travel to the courthouses in these states or even to travel to a Family History Center or library to order and view these records on microfilm (not to mention the difficulties encountered in trying to read the the handwriting of yesteryear on faded film or paper). Our authors are familiar with the many spellings of the names found in these counties and are also familiar with the handwriting of the early county clerks, so our books may relieve you of some of the burdens associated with finding your ancestors.
We also offer genealogical research assistance, publication services including manuscript editing and indexing, and web site creation and maintenance.

The West Virginia Encyclopedia
by The West Virginia Humanities Council
Edited by Ken Sullivan

Working under the slogan, "All there is to know about West Virginia," the editors of The West Virginia Encyclopedia packed 2,200 articles into the pages of this big book. These articles are the work of nearly 600 writers, experts in many fields pertaining to the history and culture of the Mountain State. In The West Virginia Encyclopedia you will find biographies of hundreds of West Virginians, including every governor; dozens of articles of West Virginia history, from Indian times to the present; histories of every county and all major towns and cities; West Virginia’s flora and fauna, folklore and folk arts; and more than 350 illustrations, maps, and tables. Contents are arranged alphabetically and are cross-referenced for easy access. The West Virginia Encyclopedia is the first comprehensive one-volume reference to be published in decades and is a rich sampler of all there is to know about the Mountain State.

Rootsweb Books We Own Web Site

This is a valuable research site.  It contains an index of people who own books related to family history and have voluteered to do free look-ups (except for charges for copies of material).  There is a surname index.

by Cleon E. Hammond, published by Pioneer Press.

John Hart is a great grand father and ancestor to many in the Arnold Hill cemetery. His sons went to Randolph Coounty, Virginia after the Revolutionary War and they must have numerous descendants still there. The Web page by Glenn Valis contains a sketch of John Hart.

Its the best book available on the signer and I recommend it to anyone interested in the colonial or Rev. war period.   It is out of print, but you may be able to get it through inter-library loans, or the used market.
