Berkeley County, West Virginia Biography of Harry Hopkins BYRER


         Harry Hopkins BYRER was born at Philippi, Barbour County, West Virginia, April 20, 1877, son of Frederick and Isabella (Woods) Byrer. His grandfather, Samuel Woods, was a former member of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia.

         Harry Byrer was admitted to the bar at Philippi in 1902 and practiced there in the State and Federal Courts until 1919 when he moved to Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia, and formed a partnership with the Hon. Stuart W. Walker. Wade C. Kilmer became a member of their law firm in 1922; when Stuart Walker died, the firm name continued as Kilmer & Byrer.

         He was the Assistant United States District Attorney for the Northern District of West Virginia, 1914-22, Prosecuting Attorney for Barbour County, West Virginia, 1909-1913, member of the Berkeley Bar Association and the West Virginia State Association, director of the YMCA, and member of the Chamber of Commerce.
