Berkeley County West Virginia Biography of George GARRETT


         George GARRETT was a native of England, born in Derbyshire January 21, 1834. After arriving in America in 1848, he settled in Pennsylvania; after 19 years there, he moved to Berkeley County, West Virginia. During the war between the states, George Garrett served in the Union army in the 103rd Pennsylvania Infantry. He had two brothers, Thomas and William, also in the Union service; Thomas was wounded. Richard Garrett, their father, moved to Kansas; their mother, whose maiden name was Sarah Bates, was deceased by 1884.

         On June 5, 1873, George Garrett and Sarah E. Smurr, daughter of Jacob and Eliza (Randall) Smurr, were married in Berkeley County. Sarah E. was born in Shepherdstown, Jefferson County, West Virginia, July 30, 1840.

         The Garretts lived in Martinsburg, Arden district, Berkeley County, West Virginia, where Mr. Garrett was a farmer. They had the following children: Mirah Burkhart Garrett, August 29, 1874-?; Sarah Helen Garrett, October 17, 1785-?; Frances Louisa Garrett, January 26, 1876-?; George Parvin Garrett, August 25 1879-?; and Arthur Garfield Garrett, May 18, 1881-?.
