Berkeley County, West Virginia Biography of Joseph GROVE


         Joseph GROVE, son of Henry and Phebe (Mercer) Grove, was born in Frederick County, Virginia, on July 24, 1840. On March 1, 1866, in Frederick County, Joseph and Sarah C. Duffey, born in that county and the daughter of Michael (November 3, 1816-September 8, 1843) and Susan (Fout) Duffey (March 22, 1818-still alive in 1884 and living with Joseph and Sarah) were married. On March 5, 1878, Joseph and Sarah and family moved to Berkeley County, where he was a farmer in Darkesville, Mill Creek District, Berkeley County, West Virginia.

         Children of this marriage were Edward L. Grove, March 5, 1867-?; Susan D. Grove, June 25, 1869-February 17, 1874; Harry M. Grove, February 16, 1872-?; Lucille L. Grove, December 1, 1874-March 21, 1875; Clara C. Grove, October 28, 1878-?; and Frank Grove, October 5, 1880-?.

         Susan Grove’s parents, the Duffeys, were married December 21, 1841, and their son, John H., died in his 33rd year (December 28, 1843-July 25, 1877).

         Joshua Grove, brother of Joseph, served 18 months in the Confederate army in the Civil War, was in the principal engagements of his regiment, and died in the army.
