Berkeley County West Virginia Biography of Joseph F. HESS


         Joseph F. HESS, son of Joseph M. and Ellen V. (Harden) Hess, natives of Berkeley County, was born in that county on January 20, 1836.

         On February 19, 1861, he married Catherine E. Swimley, born in Jefferson County on July 15, 1841. Her parents were Henry and Mary (Hyslett) Swimley. Joseph and Catherine Hess had the following children: Anna M. Hess, born January 13, 1862-?; Joseph H. Hess, October 18, 1864-?; Lizzie W. Hess, September 30, 1866-?; Frank M. Hess, January 30, 1870-?; Charles H. Hess, May 5, 1872-?; James O. Hess, February 7, 1875-?; John B. Hess, June 4, 1877-?; and Robert N. Hess, December 15, 1880-?.

         Joseph Hess was a soldier in the Confederate service during the Civil war, enlisting in the 12th Virginia Cavalry and serving from September 1861 until the close of the war. Some of the battles he participated in included Brandy Station, the Wilderness, and Fredericksburg. He was wounded at Louisa Courthouse, spent four weeks in the hospital and returned to duty. He was a farmer in Bunker Hill, Mill Creek district, Berkeley County, West Virginia.
