Berkeley County, West Virginia Biography of Risser HUBER

         Risser HUBER was born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, on November 24, 1827, the son of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Risser) Huber. Christian Huber, great-grandfather of Risser, emigrated from Germany between 1727 and 1736, settling near New Holland, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. His son, John, grandfather of Risser, moved to Rocky Springs, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, while the Indians still camped about North Mountain. He was once blackmailed by a person representing himself as a recruiting officer of the Continental army during the Revolutionary War and forced to pay him all the money he had with him to escape being taken into the army. But he roused his neighbors with his story and they armed themselves with pitchforks, axes, guns, etc. and surrounded the place where the officer was sleeping and recovered the money, causing the manís arrest.

         On October 17, 1850, Risser Huber and Rebecca Basore were married in Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. She was born in that county on May 3, 1829, the daughter of Peter and Elizabeth (Slighter) Basore. Her paternal grandfather was also named Peter Basore. Risser and Rebecca had the following children: A. Kington Huber, August 11, 1851-before 1884; Clara E. Huber Blondel, January 10, 1853-?; Erasmus B. Huber, January 3, 1856-?; Seward G. Huber, June 9, 1858-?; Abraham L. Huber, August 18, 1860-before 1884; Ceceilia A. Huber, March 22, 1863-?; Margaret R. Huber, August 26, 1866-before 1884; Luella E. Huber, August 6, 1868-?; and Blanch M. Huber, February 2, 1871-?. Risser Huber settled in Berkeley County in 1865, and the three youngest children were born in that county. Seward G. was born at Pleasant Hall, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and the other children in Orrstown, Franklin County.

         Risser Huber was a farmer and currier in Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia.
