Berkeley County, West Virginia Biography of Hiram H. LEMEN


         Hiram H. LEMEN was born in Berkeley County, West Virginia November 22, 1822, the son of William and Phebe (Hedges) Lemen. He was a soldier in the Confederate army during the war between the states. He died March 21, 1876.

         On May 27, 1858, Hiram H. Lemen and Mary V. Byers, daughter of Jacob and Catherine (Ernst) Byers, were married in Berkeley County. Mary Byers was born in Shepherdstown, Jefferson County, West Virginia, on January 27, 1834; her parents moved to Berkeley County in 1848. Mrs. Lemen descends from the Byers family who settled in the Eastern Panhandle many years before, her mother coming from Germany. Hiram and Mary Lemen had seven children: John B. Lemen, March 4, 1859-before 1884; Mary C. Lemen, November 19, 1860-?; Charles M. Lemen, July 10, 1865-?; Edgar Lemen, October 28, 1867-?; Robert Fletcher Lemen, December 27, 1869-?; and Ella May Lemen, May 8, 1872-before 1884.

         Mrs. Lemenís address was Shepherdstown, Jefferson County, West Virginia.
