Berkeley County West Virginia Biography of Benjamin F. LEWIS


         Benjamin F. LEWIS, son of Lewis and Mary (Seckman) Lewis, was born in Berkeley County August 10, 1818, and was a farmer in Bunker Hill, Mill Creek District, Berkeley County, West Virginia.

         On November 1, 1837, he married Mary Anderson, daughter of Providence and Hannah (Custer) Anderson, also a native of Berkeley County, born January 16, 1818. They had 12 children: Catherine Lewis, December 4, 1839-?; David Lewis, April 14, 1841-1965; Franklin Lewis, November 9, 1842-?; John Lewis, December 25, 1844-1865; Walter Lewis, April 4, 1846-?; Rebecca Lewis, November 23, 1848-?; Lewis Lewis, April 14, 1850-?; Fannie Lewis, February 23, 1852-?; Sarah Lewis, February 19, 1854-September 13, 1873; Margaret Lewis, June 3, 1858-?; Cornelia Lewis, September 4, 1861-?; and Calvin Lewis, June 19, 1863-?. John, David and Franklin were soldiers in the Confederate army during the Civil War and were all in the 12th Virginia Cavalry, serving until the end of the war. David was reported missing and was never heard from again.
