Berkeley County West Virginia Biography of Samuel McKOWN

         Samuel McKOWN was born in Berkeley County, West Virginia in 1827 and died at his home farm in Gerrardstown, October 2, 1858. Samuel McKown’s father, born in Berkeley County April 1, 1879, married his first wife, Avelina Henshaw in Mill Creek district, February 2, 1825; she was the mother of Samuel. His father’s second wife was Catherine G. Shepherd, to whom he married in Fauquier County, Virginia. His father (who was never named in this article) died September 19, 1880, at 82 years old.

         In Darkesville, Berkeley County, Samuel McKown married M.L. Oak, who was born in that district in 1828. Her father was born March 19, 1787 and moved from Boston, Massachusetts, in 1808; he died July 14, 1856 (he was never named in this article). Her mother, Margaret (Collins) Oak, was born August 25, 1794, in Berkeley County and died May 10, 1871.

         Samuel and M.L. McKOWN had the following children: Emma S. McKown, June 16, 1852-before 1884; Mariam A. McKown, January 1, 1856-?; George KcKown, June 18, 1857-before 1884; and Lucy E. McKown, April 22, 1859-? and made their home in Gerrardstown, Berkeley County, West Virginia.
