Berkeley County West Virginia Biography of Francis R. SHEPHERD


         Francis R. SHEPHERD, the son of Abraham and Helen (Peck) Shepherd, settlers in Jefferson County, West Virginia, was born in that county October 16, 1816. He moved to Berkeley County April 19, 1845. Two of his brothers were soldiers in the Civil war, serving in the Confederate army. Robert Shepherd was a volunteer in the 2nd Virginia Infantry and was wounded in the battle of Kernstown. He died in the service in 1862, at the age of 40. Alexander Shepherd was in the same regiment, in Company H., and at the first battle of Manassas he was wounded; he died soon after, in 1861.

         On November 10, 1855, in Jefferson County, Francis R. Shepherd married Margrett McMurran, a native of that county and the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Lucus) McMurran. The Shepherds had the following children: Abraham Shepherd, September 21, 1857-before 1884; William L. Shepherd, November 27, 1858-?; James H. Shepherd, February 10, 1861-?; Mary H. Shepherd, November 5, 1863-?; Robert L. Shepherd, September 3, 1866-?; Frank H. Shepherd, May 13, 1869-?; and Alexander V. Shepherd, February 27, 1874-?.

         The Shepherd family lived at Martinsburg, Arden district, Berkeley County, West Virginia, where Francis R. was a farmer.
