Berkeley County, West Virginia Biography of John D. TURNER


         John D. TURNER, son of James and Sophia (Shoafstall) Turner, was born near Williamsport in the Falling Waters district of Berkeley County, on May 6, 1826. His father was a soldier in the War of 1812, serving under Colonel Byrd. He received a pension until his death in 1876. John Turnerís mother died in 1872.

         In Hagerstown, Maryland, on May 13, 1851, John Turner and Mary McIlhenny, born in that city to Michael and Mary (Monohan) McIlhenny, were married. Three children were born to them, only Helen living in 1884: Mary S. Turner, born September 1853; James Turner, born in 1854; and Helen L., born January 22, 1856. Mrs. Turner was also deceased by 1884.

         John D. Turner was elected town sergeant and constable in 1860 and served until West Virginia was separated from Virginia. In 1876, he was re-elected constable. His mailing address was Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia.
