FALLS MILL SCHOOL
The first log structure of the school was built in the 1870’s. Then a one room building, which was considered built an up-to-date school house. The last new school was built in 1936. Two students in 1921 were the champion speller for Braxton County, Eva (Gillispie) Barrett and Grey Bird, the penmanship champion.
Before the well was drilled, drinking water was carried from Alzina Casto’s house. We had the pot belly stoves, took our lunch with us, and later up in the grades had hot lunch with Edith Teter as our cook. Later Ova Veith was the cook. Some of the students walked several miles to obtain an education. The students entering high school first went to Sutton High School; later, when the hardtop road was finished in the late twenties, they went to Burnsville. The main event of the year was the Christmas program, when the folding doors were opened and family and friends were present to see their children on stage, acting, reciting and singing the Christmas carols.
My teachers were while going to Falls Mill School, Clora Marple, Georgie Haymond, Edna Marie Exline, and Victor Berry, teacher and principal.
Our bus driver Sol Brown took the eighth grade class to Burnsville and we joined other students from the Salt Lick district to walk across the stage and get our diploma, our highlight.
The last teacher and principal at Falls Mill was Virginia (Prince) Robison and Virgil Stewart in 1968-1969. On April 15, 1969, the board decided to close the school and it was torn down. Submitted by: Eva Bull.
