11. MERRITT CEMETERY #1, Barboursville, ¾ mi.
N., 300 ft. W. Merritt's Creek Road, on J. F. Barnett farm.
Established 1821 or earlier as a private burial ground; extent, 50 x 50 ft.; no restrictions as to type and placing of markers;
not fenced; no
landscaping; condition, poor. Lots not marked; graves marked with granite,
sandstone, and marble slabs; no burial records kept; no longer in use as burial
ground. Earliest stone dated 1821. This cemetery is situated on
the farm site of the log house once used as the Cabell County courthouse for
which commemoration has been made in a D.A.R. bronze marker on U. S. 60 near
Guyan River Bridge. Marked graves, 23, unmarked
graves, 4, possibly more.
