DEATH TAKES CAPTAIN A. G. CHAPMAN

   Funeral services for Alfred G. Chap-
man, who died at the home of his daughter, Miss Sadie D. Chapman, 1753 Third avenue, will be held at the First Methodist Episcopal church, Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock.
   Captain Chapman, a veteran of the Civil war and distinguished in military and civil service to his country, was 82 years of age at the time of his death. The end came suddenly after an illness since only last Saturday. High blood pressure was given as a cause of his death.
   Captain Chapman had made many contributions to the welfare of the community in which he lived, notable among which was the institution of a movement for the planting of memorial trees in Ritter Park to the memory of Union soldiers. The memorial consists of a row of 120 trees. He was active in the affairs of the Huntington post of Grand Army of the Republic and in other patriotic and civic organizations.
   He served through a number of important battles of the Civil war as a member of the company H, First Connecticut regiment. He lived in Columbus, O., prior to his removal to Huntington, where hw was very active in the interests of the Grand Army of the Republic post here. He served twice
as commander of the Elias J. Beers post No. 575, Grand Army of the Republic, at Columbus, and later served as vice-commander of McCoy post, G. A. R., at Columbus, at a time when the post membership numbered about 1,500. He was named eight times as a delegate to the state encampments of the Grand Army from McCoy post.
   After he came to West Virginia, he served for five years as state patriotic instructor of the West Virginia organization of the G. A. R.
   Captain Chapman was born in 1842, and spent his boyhood in Glastonbury, Conn. He was the son of Betsy and Filo Chapman. When he reached young manhood he married Miss Julia Brimshaw of Moodis, Conn. The only son, Ellery Edwin, died at the age of five years, and Miss Sadie D. Chapman, the only daughter, survives her father. Mrs. Chapman died on April 20, 1914.
   Miss Sadie Chapman is carrying on the work of her father. At the present time, she is state patriotic instructor for the Daughters of Union Veterans. Miss Chapman was recently appointed custodian of the tree memorial.
   Dr. C. E. Goodwin, pastor of Johnson Memorial church, will officiate at funeral services. Interment will be made in Spring Hill cemetery.

A. G. CHAPMAN
   Funeral services for A. G. Chapman, 82 year old Civil War veteran, of the Union army, who died early Thursday morning, will be held at the First Methodist church at 3 o'clock this afternoon.
   Dr. C. E. Goodwin, pastor of the church, will conduct the services and interment will be made at the Spring Hill cemetery.
   Captain Chapman was an active member of the G.A.R., acting as an instructor in patriotic work in the State of West Virginia for several years. He is survived by his daughter, Miss Sadie Chapman of Huntington.
