Johnson Cemetery

JOHNSON CEMETERY, HARVEYTOWN, CABELL CO.
MOVED FOR I-64 TO MANY OTHER CEMETERIES
IN WAYNE AND CABELL COUNTIES

During 1963 the West Virginia Dept. of Highways determined that the Johnson Cemetery Located near the old Cook School House in Harveytown would have to be moved to make way for the Interstate (I-64).  A consultant was hired to locate the existing graves and document where each was located.  While this was being done, families were contacted foe comment and direction as to where graves should be moved.  Several chose cemeteries in Cabell County.  But the majority of the graves, some 687 were moved to Dock's Creek Cemetery, 2 to Cyrus Cemetery, 1 to the Earl Cemetery, 1 to the Donohue Cemetery, 34 to the Ross Addition of Crescent Hill, and 5 to the Hillcrest Cemetery - all in Wayne County.  Cabell County Cemeteries were Woodmere Cemetery 10, Spring Hill Cemetery1, Baylous Cemetery 7, Crook's Cemetery 24, Wyant Cemetery 8, and Susie Chapel 4.  The Mount Vernon Cemetery in Putnam County also received one of the moved graves.  In all some 785 graves were moved.

Of those moved to Dock's Creek, out of the 687, some 244 were marked UNKNOWN.  Drawings were made and each grave was documented where it's particular place was in the original cemetery and new drawings were made to mark it's new home in the respective cemetery where it was moved.  Graves stones were moved if there was a stone.  The majority had no "marked stones" so the documented lot numbers and grave identification may be the only means of identifying an ancestor's final resting place.

Since the majority of these graves were moved to Wayne County, we are including all graves with their respective lot number and cemetery name.  Some of these graves were inventoried in earlier volumes and we include birth and death dates as we found them.  Dock's Creek Cemetery was included in our Volume IV, Cyrus Cemetery in Volume III, Hillcrest in Volume IV, Crescent Hill in Volume I and Earl Cemetery is included in this volume.

All of this has been done so that all of the UNKNOWNS can be identified.  If you have someone that was buried in the Johnson cemetery and you do not find their name included below, please notify us so that we can begin to identify these unknowns.  We will provide up-dates in future volumes of those that we identify.  We will never fit all the people in all the correct plots, but accurate listing of original burials would be a big improvement.

An alphabetical listing of known burials is included on the following pages.  Reinternment Index Lot and Grave numbers in the new cemeteries are also given.  There are a few pages of those marked "UNKNOWN" included with lot and grave numbers, in the hope that this will aid in identification of each grave.  Locate family lot numbers and check to see if you have loved ones in those marked unknown.   THE DATE IS THE DATE THE GRAVE WAS MOVED.

The about information was given to Bill Tucker by the West Virginia Dept. of Highways.  Bill has furnished all of the information to be used on the "Doors to the Past" web site for the Johnson Cemetery.
