QUESTION REGARDING TRACT NUMBERS I have a copy of a deed dated March 1, 1779. According to the deed, Michael Alt, my ancestor, owned tract number 31 and tract number 43. Both of the above mentioned two tracts of land were located on the west side of the South Branch of the Potomac River. The tracts were also located very near what is called the South Branch Manor. Both of the tracts were located in what was Hampshire County, Virginia but is now Grant County, West Virginia and Hardy County West Virginia. I recently purchased a copy of a book entitled, PIONEERS OF OLD FREDERICK COUNTY, VIRGINIA by Cecil O+Dell. On a map that came with the book (and on page 553 and 554), it indicates that tract number 31 and tract number 43 were NOT owned by Michael Alt and were NOT located near the South Branch of the Potomac. Why do the tract numbers mentioned in the book appear to be unrelated to the tract numbers mentioned in a 1779 deed? Do you know where I can obtain information (or a book) related to tract numbers regarding land located on the west side of the South Branch of the Potomac River (in the year 1779)? QUESTION REGARDING "SOUTH BRANCH MANOR" The South Branch Manor is mentioned in the ALT TO WELTON DEED. I just found it listed on an old map and it was located in what is now Hardy County and Grant County. It was once (1779) located in Hampshire County before the development of Hardy, Grant and Counties. Let me know if you know anything about the South Branch Manor.

This is my first message on here. I hope it is going thru. I'm trying to find info on my 4 G Grandfather, George Cooper. I have reason to believe that my George Cooper's first name was Hans when he came to this country. He lived at Pleasant Dale, or & Sandy Ridge. His son, John, lived there also. John;'s son, Jacob, lived on Cold Stream. These are my ancestors & I have alot of info on all but George. I think he came to this country as a 5 year old with his parents & their name was originally Kuefer.

George Cooper bought 129 acres, called Plumb Tree Bottom, in 1799 & 80 acres joing it, on North side of Sandy Ridge, in 1802. His home was by the waters of Tear Coat Creek. He died here in 1809. His wife was supposed to be Mary Rutman. However, I just yesterday realized that she could have been Mrs Mary Rutman. In George's will he listed his sons as Cooper & also listed a son, Jacob Rutman. He very well could have been Mary's son by a previous marriage. George named him as co-adminster, but did not leave him anything.

Their son, John Cooper, bought 50 acres on North River in 1802. He died 9-6-1848, in Hampshire Co. John's wife was Mary Rinehart.

Their son, Jacob, died 3-7-1875, on Cold Stream. His wife was Anna Park.

Could you possibly shed any light on this? Would really appreciate any help. Thank you kindly,

I am researching the family of PETER SMITH. Peter died Feb. 10th, year u/k possibly 1849. Peters wife was a SARAH. Sarah died March 18,1844.

There are two " known" children to this union, a PETER SMITH JUN. ( Jr.) that died Jan.11th 1853 and a ROSANNA SMITH that was born in Va. in "1814", 1813 or 1812. Rosanna Smith married a THOMAS KELLY/ KELLEY in 1842. ( Thomas was born in Dec. of 1812 in Co. Kilkenny, Ireland.) I do have the Kelly line from Thomas and Rosanna on down. Thomas And Rosanna lived and died in Bloomery, Hampshire Co. W.Va.

An old Bible that was found lists my SMITHS and KELLY'S but Many GRANT'S are listed also!!! We have no idea who these GRANT'S are.

Anyone that might have ANY info. on the SMITH , KELLY/ KELLEY and or GRANT family, Please let me know.

Matheus (Matthew) Van Kuykendall/Jannetje Westvaal and sons Peter/Mary Hampton, Jacobus (James)/Sarah Coburn, John/Rebecca Hardin, Abraham/Elizabeth Unknonw and Jacob. Abraham and Jacob may be the sons of Matthew and second wife Mary Tate.

Matthew owned property 1749 in Fredrick Co. - went to NC with sons abt 1750-51.

Supposedly Cornelius' sons Johannes, Abraham and Peter also went to NC. Having difficulty distinguishing between the two families unless a wife is named in land records or Augusta Co. is mentioned.

Am seeking information on HIRAM W. WILSON. He was born about 1825. He married Catherine Elsey(Elsy or Elzy)(b.1814) on June 10, 1846 by Rev. Benjamin Stickley(United Brethren). His children were Ann V.(b.1847), Samuel (b.1849), Henry E.(b.1851), Jacob Edmond (b.1853- d.2/10/1855),Isaac (b.1856), John W. (b.1859) Catherine had sister Margaret Elsy (b.1812)living with them in 1860 and sister Dorothy (Elsy) Ray living next door along with her mother Cecilia Elsy. I believe Hiram was the son of William and Barbary Wilson. Hiram owned property in Hardy (now Grant) Co. He is listed in the 1850 and 1860 census but then disappears. The rest of the family moved to Coshocton Co., Ohio in 1849. Later still, 2 brothers Adam C. and Charles W. Wilson moved to Marion Co., Iowa. Hiram does not show in either place. Any idea where these people went would be appreciated.

During the Civil War James and his brother, John went North and ended up in Illinois. Looking for parents of Henry Adkins/Adkinson. The family was last located in Gore, Hampshire Co., W.Va. 1880 Henry and the two youngest boys were living together. Chilren of Henry & Eleanor:

From: R. TRACY HUNTER My gggf's name was David Sites Hunter. He was born in Rockingham Co., Va. in 1812. On a marriage certificate he lists his parents as Isaac Hunter and Sarah Sites. From this point on the trail gets really cold. I can't find anything about Isaac Hunter in the area of Harrisonburg (Rockingham Co.) except that there's a marriage of Isaac Hunter to Elizabeth Kyger (Kiger) in October of 1812. My gggf was born in June. Did Sarah die in childbirth? If so, he sure remarried fast enough.

I've tried to approach this from the Sites side and the only Sites that I can find that would be old enough to have a twenty (approx) year old daughter in June of 1812 would be George Sites of Rockingham Co., but I can't find any info on his children.

There are Sites from WVA. Maybe Isaac and Sarah settled in WVA counties around Rockingham.

Seeking data on Parsons descendants of Thomas Parsons and his alleged wife Parthenia Baldwin/Boyldwin. Earliest proven record for Thomas is 1753 Hampshire Co VA will for Daniel Richardson. Have not been able to prove a family relationship between the Parsons and the Richardson's. Six known children of Thomas and Parthenia include Arness, Prudence, Isaac, Thomas, James, Baldwin. There is an alleged daughter named Elizabeth who was the widow of Dr. Henry Hindsman/Heinzman but it is not proven she is a daughter at this time. Names of descendants include Cunningham, Graham/Grimes, Rennick, Thomas, Welton, Miles, Stump, Millar/Miller, Gregg, Casey, Foreman among others. Many of these descendants settled in Hampshire, Hardy, Randolph and Tucker counties now located in West Virginia. Thank you.
