Named for Thomas Jefferson, Jefferson County was formed in 1801 from Berkeley County, Virginia. When West Virginia became the 35th state in 1863, Jefferson County became a part of it. Located in the eastern panhandle of the state, Jefferson County is surrounded by Berkeley County, West Virginia; Washington County, Maryland; Loudon County, Virginia and Clarke County, Virginia. The county seat is Charles Town.
