Childress, Conley Families
Abraham Childress I married Jane Howard dau of John Howard. Abraham came from Cantley, Yorkshire, England. Arrived in Jamestown Virginia in 1630- 1635. He settled at Four Mile Creek, James River. Better known as Bermuda Hundred. Abraham born abt 1615 and died in 1680. Jane died 1681 both are buried in Henrico County, Virginia. Children of Abraham and Jane Childress are as follows: Philemon b. 1645 d. 1735, Sarah d. 1722, Abraham II b. 1650 d. 1698, William d. 1727, Henry, Phillip d. 1659 (Henrico County record book 1) Philemon Childress son of Abraham and Jane lived in Henrico Co. He married Mary Evan's dau of Griffin Evan's. Philemon died 1717 his will was made on June 10, 1716 and probated May 3, 1717. Children of Philemon and Mary are as follows; Thomas b. 1675 d. 1734 Mary, Abraham, Philemon Jr. Thomas Childress son of Philemon and Mary married Mary last name unknown. Their children are as follows: Thomas II b. 1700, Philemon, James. Thomas II son of Thomas and Mary married Mary Hobson dau of William Hobson. Their children are as follows: William b. 1723 in Amelia Co Va d. 1772. William son of Thomas II and Mary was born and died in Amelia Co Va. He married Keturah Hawkins. Their child Robert was born in 1756. Rev. Robert Childress was a soldier in the Rev War, and served under Captain Hudson. His major battle was fought at Guilford Court House on March 15, 1781. Robert was ranked as Orderly Sgt. Robert married Mary Tompkins in 1810. In 1840 Robert moved his family to Kanawha Co. Children of Robert and Mary are as follows: James b. 1817 d. 1885 m Cidney Pauley, Henry b. 1812 d. 1859 m Rebecca Pauley, Millie, Lucinda, Rebecca b. Oct. 30, 1824 married John Wesley Conley, Eddie, John, Nellie married Mr. Dunlap Robert died June 11, 1848 Mary died March 12, 1862 (Family Bible record) Most of the Childress are buried at the Childress cemetery in Ruth, Kanawha Co. Rebecca Childress married John Wesley Conley on May 14, 1839. John was the son of Thomas Conley better known as Thomas Hackett. (see history of Logan Co. by Ragland) John was a blacksmith. John and Rebecca are buried at the Childress Cemetery. Their children are as follows: Anderson "Andy" b. April 25, 1840, Issac b. March 1, 1842 , George Washington b. married Eliza Alice Simpson on Nov 27, 1873 April 30, 1844, Cormila b. May 1, 1846 d. Feb 19, 1857, Mary Frances b. May 3, 1848. **All info taken from family Bible** Rebecca died 1896 John died June 2, 1874. Anderson enlisted in Co L 7th Regt. on March 12, 1864 his brothers Issac and George Washington also served in the Civil War. Anderson married Alvina Deal on July 6, 1865 she was the dau of Richard and Elinor Deal. She was born 1851 in Tazewell Co. Their children are as follows: Amanda b. March 18, 1870, Louvenia and Charles. Anderson died April 15, 1880. Amanda Conley was known as Mindy she married Soloman Cook on Dec 16, 1889 after his death she married George Gibson on April 17, 1897 both are listed as widowed. George parents are William and Martha Gibson their children are as follows: Wyatt, Beckie, Alzona b. Jan 20, 1896, Marietta, Andy, Charley, Marie, George Jr, Ira, Amos, Elmer and Ernest. Alzona better known as Zona married Peter Henick on Aug 16, 1916 in Thayer, Fayette Co. W. Va. Their children are as follows: Wyatt died 1 mo old, Eldridge b. Oct 13, 1919 d. Dec 6, 1987, Virginia Stella b. Nov. 15, 1921, Lee Henix b. March 25, 1927 d. Aug 19, 1991 and Frederick Gene b. July 4, 1937. Alzona died Nov 9, 1959 and Peter died May 8, 1962 both are buried in Charleston in unmarked graves. Peter Henick was born July 12, 1890 in Ver Hoven, Croatia. He came to the US on Sept. 20, 1907 on the SS Kaisern Auguste Victoria.
