Eldridge Mansfield COPENHAVER (1887-1931) was born in the Elk District, Kanawha County, WV and is a son of William "Floyd" COPENHAVER (1852-1928) and Grace CARSON (1855-1932) his first wife. Eldridge Mansfield had two brothers, Lawrence W. (1875-1954) and Hubert L. (1881-1973). All were born on the Jacob Thomas COPENHAVER farm in an area called Lick Branch near Coopers Creek, Elk District near Elkview, WV. All (with the exception of "Floyd") relocated c.1900 to Dunlevy, Washington Co., PA on a packet boat with their mother Grace CARSON after a divorce from "Floyd". They relocated to California and Coal Center, PA and started Plainview Dairy Farm on High Point, Coal Center, PA. on the Monongahela River. Flora Leola GIBSON was "Floyd's" second wife produced the following children who remained in Kanawha County. Fred Shin (1899-1964); Virginia (1892-c.1976); Dale (c.1889-dec.); Thomas Franklin (1895-dec.) and William "Grant" (1905- ). "Floyd" was a native of the Mountain State and followed the vocation of farming. He was a republican in his political views and was a member of the Baptist Church. "Floyd" is a son of Jacob Thomas COPENHAVER (1824- 1904) and Virginia NEWCOMER (1828-1917), Kanawha Co.,WV, settling in Nicholas County, WV from the Shenandoah Valley region. where he farmed and also worked at surveying. Jacob Thomas's parents were Jacob and Sarah DOTSON. Eldridge Mansfield COPENHAVER attended the public schools in Kanawha County, WV and California, Washington County, PA. and then took a course in electrical engineering at Scranton, Pennsylvania, followed by two years in the mining school at California, Pennsylvania. He did first aid work for five years and then for a time was employed in the electrical department of mines in this vicinity. For more than twenty years he has served as electrical foreman for the Vesta Coal Company, his long retention in this important position attesting his ability and faithfulness. He is thoroughly qualified technically and devotes himself indefatigably to the performance of his duties, the welfare and prosperity of the mines in his care being largely dependent upon his attention to the electrical service. Politically, Eldridge Mansfield COPENHAVER has always given his support to the Republican party and has served as burgess of California Pennsylvania (1926-1931) giving an able and businesslike administration of the town's affairs. Fraternally he is a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, in which he has attained the thirty-second degree of the Scottish Rite. He is a member of Syria Temple, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, at Pittsburgh; the Junior Order of United American Mechanics; and the Chamber of Commerce. Religiously he is an Active member of the Methodist Episcopal Church at California, being a member of the official board, belonging also to the Men's Bible class and the Epworth League. He has been deeply interested in work among the boys and is a member of the troop committee of the Boy Scouts of America. He is a member of the National Reform Association of Pittsburgh and takes a commendable interest in every movement of an uplifting character, as well as in all measures proposed for the betterment of his own community. Eldridge Mansfield COPENHAVER was married May 3, 1911, at Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, to Miss Pearl KIESLING (1889-1927) born in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. To Mr. and Mrs. Copenhaver have been born three children, namely: Harold Ray (1913-1992); Edna Mae WALKER (1918- ); Paul Eldridge (1921-1994). Eldridge and Pearl are interred with Grace CARSON in the Howe Cemetery, Long Branch, Washington Co., Pennsylvania. Eldridge Mansfield COPENHAVER is a man of courteous and gentlemanly manner, kindly and genial in his social relations and generous in his support of all worthy benevolent causes, and no one in the community stands higher in popular esteem and confidence than he. Immigrant families who worked in the coal mines depended on the Copenhaver's benevolence for their supply of dairy products and vegetables during the depression and economic downturns.
