Greenbury Slack
Greenbury Slack - "Uncle Green," as he was usually titled among his neighbors - was born in Kanawha county, Virginia, December 3, 1807.
Whilst upon the farm of his father, John Slack, he used every spare hour for study, and with the aid of select and private schools acquired
a fair English education. He was a Justice of the Peace, by the commission of Virginia's Governor, and also a leading member of the M.E.
Church. He was sent to Wheeling, in 1861, as a delegate to the Convention which reorganized the State Government. He was also a
member of the Convention of 1863, to frame a Constitution for the State of Kanawha - afterwards christened West Virginia. He served in
the State Senate from 1863 to 1868. He died at his home in Charleston July 1, 1873. For native acumen but few West Virginians were his
superior. He was an omniverous reader, and retained nearly everything he read. In many respects, he was a remarkable man.
