Old Hunter Cemetery
Hunter Cemetery is a Family burial site for all those related to the William Hunter family lines. William Hunter was born in Giles County ca. 1793. His parents were Robert Hunter and Millie Atkins. William Hunter married Barbara Lugar, daughter of Adam Lugar (revolutionary) and Anna Margaret Clapp, on May 5, 1823. They moved to Kanawha County ca. 1830 after the birth of their son Samuel. William set up a saw mill on the property at Elk-Two Mile. William died December 17, 1862 and Barbara subsequent to that date. Both are buried at the original family plot now known as "old Hunter cemetery". This site rests at the foot of Hunter Hill. The markers are now illegible and the plots in undergrowth and saplings. The grandson of William, James Garfield Hunter, also known as Garfield, set up a new burial site atop Hunter Hill for family members and their families. Hunter cemetery can be seen by taking Greenbriar Road (toward the airport) to Rutledge Road. Make a right turn on Rutledge Road and continue to Hunter Road. Make a left turn onto Hunter Road and continue until you go up the hill to a stop sign. The road either goes left or right. The cemetery rests beyond that intersection on the right. There were twelve children born to Samuel Hunter and Mary Louise Abbott and the children with (#) indicates the order of each child born.

I visited the site of this small family cemetery in 1981, and took all the information given to me. The cemetery rests at the foot of Hunter Hill on the left hand side of Hunter road as you would approach the ascent. Many Hunter descendants still live in the area. I had the pleasure to talk to two daughters of James Garfield Hunter, Maria Hunter Gordon and Jackie Hunter. They had some records of those buried there, but due to the lack of those who visited the old cemetery, some of the records were misplaced. Of those I obtained, I received from these ladies. The site has been covered with undergrowth as well as trees, and the old stones were then nearly unreadable. I hope my efforts have at least preserved the site of those buried there. The new cemetery was the replacement, a better site, and finally all Hunters were interred at the new site. The following is the known buried at Old Hunter Cemetery:

Because several older Hunters would have likely been buried here are not listed, it is due only since I have not gotten positive information. As for "Uncle Kunes", it was an uncle of my sources (Maria and Jackie) and therefore, could be one of several relatives. One possibility is that of Sydney Luther Hunter's infant child (female) who died on March 24, 1917. Again, because I have not documented this, I cannot add it to this list.
