Gladys A. Alford, 84
Gladys Adamson Alford, 84, of Dayton, VA, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007, at her home.
Mrs. Alford was born Oct. 29, 1922, in Onego and was a daughter of the late Bruce and Opal Sites Adamson.
She lived her early life in Onego and the majority of her life in Dayton, VA, where she graduated from Dayton High School.
Survivors include two sons, Robert R. Alford of Dayton, VA, and Steven B. Alford of Louisa, VA; a daughter, Susan B. Carter of Grottoes, VA; a brother, Jim Adamson of Rockledge, FL; two sisters, who were also caregivers, Doris Marquess of Dayton, VA, and Naomi Spencer of College Park, MD; 11 grandchildren, including Gary E. Tolliver, whom she raised; 10 great-grandchildren; and caregiver, Mike Marquess, of Dayton, VA.
The funeral was held Tuesday at the Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, VA. Burial followed at the Dayton Cemetery.

Vivian Hope Poole, 81, of Mount Jackson, VA, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Woodstock, VA.
Mrs. Poole was born Aug. 1, 1925, in Shenandoah County, VA and was the youngest of 13 children of the late Oscar Weldon and Annie Belle Rinker Lamma.
She was married to Kenneth Bowman, Sr., who preceded her in death. ON May 23, 1957, she married Preston Poole, hwo preceded her in death March 28, 1982.
In 1978, along with her husband, Preston, she started Shenandoah County SEARCH Inc. Since then she has served as chairman of of the board of directors and administrator of the SEARCH group Home. Mrs. Poole also managed the Thrift Shop, which funds the Group Home. She has received numerous recognitions for her community service, including being listed in “Who’s Who of American Volunteers” and Mount Jackson Citizen of the Year.
Surviving are two sons, Kenneth Bowman of Dunlap, TN, and Richard "Hurley" Bowman of Richmond, VA; three daughters, Virginia "Ginger" Rich of Eads, TN, Doris Brackenrich of Franklin and Norma "Jeanie" Poole of Mount Jackson, VA; two stepdaughters, Beverly Allison of Manassas, VA, and Faith Wakefield of Missoula, MT; two sisters, Lydia Baker of Broadway, VA, and Anna Belle Hinegardner of Timberville, VA; six grandchildren, Larry Bowman, Faith Grizzle, Scott Bowman, Lesia Blaney, Molly Brackenrich and Justin Brackenrich; eight great-grandchildren; and a great great-grandchild.
She also was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters.
The Revs. Richard Krasneck and Scot J. Paradise conducted the funeral Tuesday at Morning Star Lutheran Church. Burial followed at Morning Star Church Cemetery.

Lillian Mae Chappell, 77, of Seneca Rocks died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007, at the Pendleton Nursing Home in Franklin.
Mrs. Chappell was born Aug. 22, 1929, in Hookstown, PA, and was a daughter of the late George Pierce and Laura Antill Pierce.
She graduated from Burgettstown High School in Pennsylvania and was a Protestant. She retired from Campbell’s Soup Company in Napoleon, OH in 1982 and was a press operator for 22 years.
Her husband, Raymond "Ray" Chappell, preceded her in death in 1999.
Survivors include a daughter, Johnnie Louise Ruddle of Riverton; and a sister, Betty Persin of Pittsburgh, PA.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, George Pierce, Jr.; and two sister, Ruth Pierce and Mary White.
A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Chestnut Ridge Cemetery in Florence, PA.
Memorial donations may be made to Mountain Hospice.

Charles Conrad Conley, 68, son of George W. Conley and Hazel Elkins Conley of Oceana and born Dec. 10, 1938, died as a result of a house fire on Feb. 1, 2007, with his faithful friend, companion and buddy, Bandit.
Mr. Conley was retired, but previously worked as a car salesman/manager, a carpenter and jack of all trades.
He left behind many friends and famiy members who will miss his fun loving, quick witted, sometimes cantankerous and stubborn spirit.
He was a proud father of Sabrina Ackerman of Snellville, GA, and Tamara Conley of Watkinsville, GA; Eric Conley of Long Beach, CA. and Derck Conley of Atlanta, GA; a proud father-in-law to Rick Ackerman; a proud granfather "PopPa" to Ricky Ackerman, Trent Ackerman, Morgan Conley and Hunter Conley; a proud uncle "Conkie" to Greg Paitsel and wife, Cassie of Bolt; and proud great-uncle "Conkie" to Kevin Paitsel and Justin Paitsel. H also was a proud uncle and great-uncle to many more nephews and nieces. He left behind two brothers, George Conley and Bill Conley, both of Brandyvine.
He was preceded in death by his ex-wife, Eulanna Tyree Conley Lakatos, his sister, Sally Conley Paitsel; and his nephew, Bucky Conley.
Conley was cremated and his ashes were temporarily taken back to Georgia.
A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or R.L. Norton Elementary School, 3050 Xavier Ray Court, Snellville, GA 30039, where a book will be purchased in his memory for the school library, or charity, church or missionary group of one's choice.
