Martha Grace Burnett, 84

Martha Grace McCoy Burnett, 84, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, in Pendleton Nursing Home where she had been a resident.  She recently moved from Southern Pines, NC, to a residence in the Pendleton Apartments at Pendleton Nursing Home. 

Mrs. Burnett was born Nov. 23, 1918, in Franklin, a daughter of the late William McCoy, Sr., and Mary Grace Hedrick McCoy. 

She attended West Virginia University and Strayer Business School.  She was employed by the Farmers Home Administration in Raleigh, NC.  She was a member of the Franklin Presbyterian Church. 

She was married to Lt. Edmund C. Burnett.  They resided in Quanico, VA, and later moved to Arlington, VA, until retiring in Southern Pines, NC. 

She was preceded in death by her husband on Jun 16, 1990.

She is survived by a daughter, Caroline McCoy Burnett of Falls Church, VA; a son and daughter-in-law, Edmund Cody, and Ellen Burnett of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and grandson , Edmund "Cody" Burnett, III; two brothers, William McCoy, Jr., and Robert G. McCoy, both of Franklin.

Visitation was held at the Basagic Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Wednesday morning with a funeral service conducted at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Dr. Richard Young at Basagic Funeral Home and interment was in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.

Ethel White Clayton, 86

Ethel White Clayton, age 86, of Monterey, VA, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, at Avante in Waynesboro, VA.

She was born January 31, 1917, in Highland County, a daughter of the late Henry Patterson and Lenora B. (Moats) White. 

On June 22, 1935, she married Franklin Edward Clayton, who preceded her in death.  She was also preceded in death by a son, Franklin E. Clayton, Jr., two sons-in-law, Donnie L. Halterman and Randolph Waybright; and a daughter-in-law Bonnie Clayton. 

Mrs. Clayton retired from Aileen, Inc., and she was a member of the Avante United Methodist Church. 

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. 

She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Dallas Waybright and Ella and Dale Propst, all of Monterey, VA, and Myrtle and Bill Lambert of Staunton, VA; a son Mike Clayton of Verona , VA; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a foster great grandchildson, Christ Whitelaw. 

 A funeral service was conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA, by the Rev. Michael Sullivan and Rev. David Burch. 

Burial was in the Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Jesse Glenn Kimble, 90

Jesse Glenn Kimble, 90, of Onego, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg. 

Mr. Kimble was born Feb. 8, 1913, at Smoke Hole and was the son of the late Wilbur Kimble and Mary Alt Kimble.

He was a farmer. 

His wife, Louise Teter Kimble, preceded him in death in October, 1976.

He is survived by a daughter, Loraine Louise Kimble of Onego; a sister, Helen Borror of Upper Tract; and several nieces and nephews. 

The Rev. Bruce Cosner conducted the funeral 2 p.m. Saturday at the Basagic Funeral HOme in Franklin. Burial was at the Kimble Family cemetery in Onego.

Memorial donations may be made to the Pendleton Nursing Home, Franklin. 

Matthew L. Hedrick, Infant

Matthew Lee Hedrick, son of Donald and Amber May Hedrick of Franklin was still born Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandparents, Linda Shreve May of Franklin, Larry and Linda S. May of Harrisonburg, VA, and Tom and Zelda Butterworth of Sugar Grove; and his great-grandfather, Estyl Shreve of Franklin. 

He was preceded in death by his grandparents , Edward Paul Hedrick, Oct. 29, 1994, and Gertie Kimble Shreve, June, 1990; and his grandparents, Quenton and Ethel Dove May, Charles and Estella Propst Hedrick, and Vernon Corbett Legg and Nancy Margaret Legg.

Bishop David Hartman and elder Grayson Murphy of the Franklin Ward of the church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints conducted the funeral 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Chapel of Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was a the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.

William Cunningham, 85

William Granville Cunningham, 85, a retired construction forman died on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, of Respiratory failure at Franklin Square Hospital in Baltimore, MD. 

Mr. Cunningham was born in Onego to Abraham and Pearly (nee Raines) Cunningham.  He married Josie Vance in April 1938; they celebrated 64 years together. 

He resided in Baltimore, MD, until 1982; the past 20 years, he lived in Keysville, VA, and was an active member of the Emmanuel Bible Church.  In October 2002, he and Josie returned to Baltimore, MD, to live with their youngest daughter. 

Surviving are his loving wife, Josie; three sons, Donald of Annapolis, MD, Carle and David of Baltimore, MD; two daughters, Rebecca Manning of Rice, VA, and Carol of Baltimore, MD; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. 

A son, Ernest, preceded him in death in 1990.

Burial was Saturday, Feb. 15, at Holly Hills Cemetery in Baltimore.
