Roy Helmick, 48

Roy "Scott" Helmick, 48, of Monterey, VA, died Friday, Feb. 27, 2009, at the University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville, VA. 

He was born Aug. 8, 1960, in Bartow, a son of Annie Fay (Tidd) Helmick and the late Lester Scott Helmick of Monterey, VA.

Mr. Helmick had worked at the Homestead and was a former member of the Highland County Volunteer Fire Department, Highland County Rescue Squad and Stonewall Ruritan Club.

Surviving beside his mother are a niece, Candi Lowry of Millboro, VA; a great- niece, Destynie Lowry; an uncle, Charles Helmick of Walkerton, VA; two aunts, Mona Helmick of Staunton, VA, and Jessie Dever of Monterey, VA; and a number of cousins. 

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Steve Allen Helmick; and a half-sister, Ocie Fay Hise. 

A funeral service was conducted Monday at the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowelll, VA, with the Rev. Andre Crummett officiating.

Violet Yankey, 87

Violet May Yankey, 87, of Petersburg died Monday, March 2, 2009, at Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg.

She was born March 30, 1921, in Upper Tract and was the daughter of the late John R. Alt and Hattie E. (Cook) Alt.

Her husband,Raymond A. Yankey, preceded her in death on Feb. 1, 1988.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. 

Mrs. Yankey retired from Joan Curtis Sewing FActory in Pet5ersburg and was a charter member of the Petersburg First Baptist Church.

Surviving are three sons, Dr. John A. Yankey and wife, Sylvia of Cleveland, OH, James Douglas Yankey and wife, Shirley of Charlottesville, VA, and Jack K. Yankey and wife, Betty of Fairfax STation, VA; one daughter, Juanita Mahaney and husband, Jim of Evansville, IN; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by four sisters, Minnie Ramsey, Nina Thompson, Verdie Alt and Goldie Borror; and two brothers, Charles Alt and Dayton Alt.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, with Rev. Dr. James Ash officiating.  Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Petersburg.

Memorials may be made to the Petersburg First Baptist Church or the Grant County Nursing Home.

The family will receive friends this evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg. 

Kyle Puffenberger, 18

Kyle Hunter Puffenberger, 18, of Upper Tract, died Friday afternoon, Feb. 27, 2009, as the result of an automobile accident.

Born May 19, 1990, at Petersburg, he was the son of Kevin Puffenberger and Heather Suzanne Sites Puffenberger, and big brother of Kole Jacob Puffenberger

He was the big brother of Kole Jacob Puffenberger of Upper Tract. .

He was a 2008 graduate of Pendleton County High School, where he played sports for the Wildcats and was a freshman at Glenville State College, where he was a proud member of the football team. He enjoyed hunting, football and baseball. He was a member of the Main Mountain Freewill Baptist Church.

Along with his parents and brother, he is survived by paternal grandfather, Virgil Puffenberger of Pendleton Manor, Franklin; maternal grandparents, Glenn M. and Debbie Hevener Sites of Upper Tract; and maternal great-grandmother, Martha Hevener of Franklin.

He was preceded in death by paternal grandmother, Betty Puffenberger; and maternal great-grandfather, Claude Hevener.

Funeral services will held today at 2:00 p.m. at Living Faith Church in Franklin, with Pastor Glenn M. Sites officiating. Burial will be in the Sites Family Cemetery at Upper Tract.

The family will receive friends today from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Living Faith Church.

Debra Sue Watts, 52

Debra Sue Watts, 52 of Petersburg died Saturday Feb. 28, 2009, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, VA.

She was born Aug. 28, 1956, in Petersburg and was the daughter of the late Borden A. "Bill" Watts and Leota D. (Cook) Watts.

She graduated from Petersburg High School in 1974.

Surviving are her companion, Bernard "Buck" Wright; one son, Richard A. Rodgers, Jr., of Petersburg; one granddaughter; Haley Rodgers; two sisters, Joyce Alt of Upper Tract and Pat Watts of Petersburg; and two brothers, Fred Watts of Cabins and David Watts of Eglon. 

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, with Pastor Shaun Roberts officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family, c/o Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg.
