Arthur W. "Art" Thomas

Arthur W. "Art" Thomas, 78, of Franklin died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Thomas was born Dec 15, 1930, in Franklin Co., VA, and was a son of the late Hosea Edwin Thomas and Bertha Virginia Prillaman Thomas.

In April 1970, he established the Franklin IGA, and before that he worked for Kroger Grocery Stores for 24 years.  He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. Thomas was a member of Living Faith Church.  He attended Martinsville, VA, schools and National Business College in Roanoke, VA.

On July 21, 1956, he married Sarah Rife Thomas, who survives. 

Also surviving are two daughters, Tracy Ellett and husband, Jimmy of Lynchburg, VA, and Linda Teter and husband, Stephen of Franklin; a son of , Alan Thomas and wife, Roxanne of Franklin; a sister, Ruth Eanes of Thomasville, NC; a brother Euel Thomas of HIgh Point, NC; and nine grandchildren, Bethany Teter Shipp and husband, Kevin, Amanda Teter, Kellis Teter, Aaron Teter, Sarah Teter, Holly Thomas, Cory Thomas, Adam Ellett and Luke Ellett.

He also was preceded in death by two sisters, Lois Fulcher  and Mabel Cathell.

Pastors Stephen Teter and Brad Mitchell conducted a memorial service Saturday at Living Faith Church.  A private burial was at Pine Crest Cemetery in Franklin.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to RMH Regional Cancer Center, 100 E. Grace St., Harrisonburg, VA 22801, or the American Red Cross to donate blood.

Arrangements were by Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.

Melvin Clyde Ruddle

Melvin Clyde Ruddle, 77, of Severn, MD, died Dec. 14, 2008, at Baltimore Washington Medical Center, MD.

Mr. Ruddle was born in Riverton on Feb. 23, 1931, to the late Russell and Floda Ruddle.

He was a mechanic for United Airlines for 43 years, until he retired in 1997.  He served in the Air Force from 1950 to 1954.  He was a member of the Chesapeake Christian Center.  He enjoyed working crossword puzzles and doing mechanical work on old tractors and cars.

The highlight of his life was visiting Pendleton County, especially Riverton and being presented with his high school diploma at his Circleville High School  reunion several years ago.

His wife of 55 years, F. Marie Ruddle, survives.

Also surviving are three daughters,Karen A. Hiett and Jennifer A. Chavez, both of Severn MD, and Lynia A. Trent of Sneedville, TN; two brothers, Roscoe Ruddle of Falls Church, VA, and Ford Ruddle of Harrisonburg, VA, three sisters, Irene Landis of Riverton, Wilda Carver of Orlando, FL, and Wanda McDermond of Crofton, MD; and four grandchildren of Severn, MD.

A memorial service was held Dec. 20, 2008, at the Chesapeake Christian Center.  Interment was private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Chesapeake Christian Center Building Fund, 8201 Edward Raynor Rd., Pasadena, MD 21122. 

Paul Junior Thompson

Paul Junior Thompson, 80, of Franklin passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at his residence.

He was born on Tract Mountain, the son of the late George Bessie Hartman Thompson.

He retired from Neilson Construction and worked in Masonry, was a woodsman, a member of Wayside Baptist Church and attended Pendleton County Schools.

In June 1946, he married Shirley Ruth Hedrick, who survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Linda Wimer and husband, Larry of Blue Grass, VA,  Deborah Smith and husband, Gary of Franklin, and Connie Comer and husband Terry of McGaheysville, VA; two sons, Paul Delmas Thompson, Pensacola, FL, and Jeffrey Bayard Thompson and wife, Vickie of Falling Waters; one sister Tressie Bridges of Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center, Harrisonburg, VA; 11 grandchildren, Angie Wimer Wilkerson and husband, Jason, David L. Wimer and wife, Kimberly, Amy Wimer Humphries, Abby Wimer Sponaugle and husband, Aaron, Rodney Smith and wife, Charlene, Michelle Smith McNair and husband, Tierre, Jeremiah Thompson and wife, Melissa, Joshua Thompson and wife, Karina, Jessica Thompson, Clay Comer and Mikayla Comer; and seven great-grandchildren, Michael David Humphries, Alex Withers, Jaylen McNair, Tyce McNair, Alliyah McNair, Katie Thompson and Andrew Thompson. 

He was also preceded in death by a son, Stacey Edward Thompson, eight brothers, Ray, George Denver, Raymond "Pete", Ona, Oden, Clarence "Pum" and Arlie "Boss"; six sisters, Donna Cassidy, Jessie Snyder, Viola Hevener, Anna Hedrick Nettie Alt, and Reta Gauding.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday at the chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin with Pastor Jeffrey B. Thompson and Pastor Hoy Lambert officiating.  Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin.

Marie Graham, 77

Marie Wimer Graham, 77, of Harrisonburg, VA, and formerly of Christiansburg, VA, went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 2, 2009.

She was a daughter of the late Edward B. and Ollie Wimer.

Her husband of 48 years, Gordon Graham, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two nieces and their husbands, Barbara Ann and Millard Pence of Singers Glen, VA, and Joyce and Bob Dyer of Fort Seybert; a brother-in-law, Claude Funkhouser of Harrisonburg, VA; great- niece, Lisa Campbell; and three great-nephews, Eric Pence, Derek Dyer and Alan Dyer.

She was also preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Annie and Herbert Bower; and a sister, Viola Funkhouser.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford, VA, and Pastor  Homer Sawyer and Pastor Richard Forsythe officiating.  Interment followed in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Christiansburg, VA.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made tot he St. Jude Research Hospital, PO Box 50, Memphis, TN  38101.
