Carl S. Smith, 82

Carl Sheldon Smith, 82, of Harrisonburg, VA, died Friday, March 14, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Smith was born Nov. 4, 1925, in Petersburg and was the son of the late Lester J. and Carrie Sites Smith.

In 1949, he moved to the Valley from Upper Tract.  For 31 years he was employed by Swift & Company and later for the Rockingham Memorial Hospital Maintenance Department until his retirement at the age of 74. He was a member of Faith Bible Church.

On June 23, 1952, he married Betty Mae Berg Smith, who survives. 

Also surviving are a daughter, Donna Kay Smith of Harrisonburg, VA; two brothers, June Smith of Alabama and Ira Smith of St. Louis, MO; and two sisters, Betty Martin of Chambersburg, PA, and Eva Kesner of Laymansville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Gene Smith, and a sister, Ruth Hill.

A funeral service was held Monday at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, VA, with Pastor Randy Spence officiating. Burial followed at Rest Haven Cemetery in Harrisonburg, VA.

Ralph A. Bennett, 76

Ralph A. Bennett, 76, of Strongsville, OH, and formerly of Circleville died March 3, 2008, in Ohio.

Born March 26, 1931, in Circleville, he was the son of the late Henry E. Bennett and Virginia Vest Bennett

Mr. Bennett graduated from Circleville High School in 1948.  He owned and operated a garage and gas station. 

His wife, Helen Rush Bennett, survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Susan Bennett and Sandy Jacobs and husband, Bob, all of Ohio; two sons, Richard "Rick" Bennett of Ohio and David Bennett of Nevada; two sisters, Mary Bland of Circleville and Silva Warner and husband, Jack of Staunton, VA; one brother, Henry Bennett and wife, Mary June of Circleville; and three grandchildren, Bobby Jacobs, Rachael Jacobs and Logan Bennett. 

Funeral services were held March 8 at the Jardine Funeral Home, Strongsville, OH, with Rev. Carl Pelzer officiating.  Burial was in the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Ohio. 

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Kenneth R. Harper

Kenneth R. Harper, 73, of Franklin, died Saturday, March 15, 2008, in Blue Grass, VA, of an apparent heart attack.

Mr. Harper was born June 14, 1934, in Franklin and was a son of the late Wilbur W. Harper and Margie Ella Teter Harper.

He retired in Dec. 26, 1988 as a schoolteacher.  He taught for six years at University High School, Morgantown and 26 year s at Franklin High School and was principal of Franklin High School for six years. He was a farmer and was a member of the Franklin Presbyterian Church. He graduated valedictorian from Franklin High School in 1952, graduated from Shepard College and received a masterís degree from WVU.

Survivors include a sister, Mary Lee Eye of Franklin; a brother, Elwood Harper of Lillian, AL; and several nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by three sister, Christina Harper, Janet Conrad and Freida Dunkle; and four brothers, Wilbur Harper, Bard Harper, George Harper and Paul Harper.  

The Rev. Kevin Lee Hand will conduct the funeral 1 p.m. today at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.

Memorial donations may be made to the Franklin Presbyterian Church.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Blanche A. Vance, 90

Blanche Ann Arbogast Vance, 90, of Harrisonburg, VA, formerly of Dayton, VA, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at Oak Lea Nursing Home, where she had been a resident since July of 1998.

She was born in Onego on Jan. 31, 1918, and was a daughter of the late Robert C. and Della M. Vance Arbogast.

She was a member of the Mennonite Church in Onego and later attended the Dayton Church of the Brethren. She retired from Sancar, where she worked as a seamstress.

She was united in marriage on June 29, 1933, to Blake Vance, who preceded her in death on Feb. 18, 1994.

She is survived by four daughters, Bonnie V. Miller and her husband, Richard of Harrisonburg, VA,  Betty Jo Roberts and her husband, Hollis,  and Nancy V. Reffett and her husband, Tim, all of Bridgewater, VA; Ruby V. Shifflett of Murray, UT, a son, Kenny Vance and his wife, Bonita of Bridgewater; VA; a sister, Gae Arbogast of Bridgewater, VA; eight grandchildren, Debra Rodeffer-Theisen, Rick Miller, Patty Sturrock, Dee Dee Reffett, Kristie McPike, Cheryl Evans, Valory Terry, Rebecca Vance (a grandchild who was raised in the home); 10 great-grandchildren, Mason Garber, Jay Rodeffer, Evan Rodeffer, Emily Sturrock, Abby Sturrock, Ashton Terry, Rett Terry, Jason Ward, Jaime Gates, and Mollie Marr; five great-great-grandchildren, Jaylie Evans, Lindsay Evans, Kyrie Evans, Avery Gates, and Ella Gates.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Boyd Jennings Vance, and a grandson, Jeffrey Scott Miller; three brothers and one sister.

A funeral service was conducted Sunday at Saint James United Methodist Church, Pleasant Valley, VA, with the Rev. David W. Breeden and Greg Adamson officiating. Burial will follow at the Clover Hill Cemetery in Dayton, VA.

Myrtle Armstrong

Myrtle Armstrong, 95, a resident at Pendleton Manor in Franklin and formerly of Moyers, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Ms. Armstrong was born Dec. 14, 1912, in Moyers and was a daughter of the late David Eli and Ethel Stover Armstrong.

She was a homemaker and retired from Western State Hospital as a nurseís aide. She was a member of St. Johnís Lutheran Church and the homemakers club in Sugar Grove.

Survivors include a daughter, Doris ďSisĒ Douglas of Staunton, VA; a son, Robert J. Armstrong of Moyers; a sister, Hannah Graham of Clinton Township, MI; four grandsons, Barry and Craig Armstrong and DAvid and Victor Douglas; five great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandsons.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Virgina Woomer; and three brothers, Paul, Jack and Leroy Armstrong. 

The Revs. Craig Richter and Wendy Richter will conduct the funeral 2 p.m. Friday at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA. Burial will be at St. Paulís Cemetery.

Zela A. Huffman

Zela Adeline Huffman, 83, of Mount Solon, VA, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at her home following a long illness.

Mrs. Huffman was born  in Augusta County, VA, on Sept. 17, 1924, and was the daughter of the late Charles Elmer and Addie (Carson) Howdyshell.

She was a member of the Emmanuel Church of the Brethren. She was a Sunday school teacher, homemaker and farmer alongside her husband.

She was united in marriage on Aug. 9, 1947, to Wesley Huffman, who preceded her in death on Dec. 18, 1995.

Surviving are a daughter, Norma Jean H. Yankey of Mount Solon, VA; a son, Gary Wayne Huffman of Mount Solon, VA; three sisters, Kathleen Armstrong of Bridgewater Home, Bridgewater, VA,  Lela Varner of McDowell, VA, Charlene Long of Mount Solon, VA; four grandchildren, Jennifer Marie Huffman Rousseau and husband, Brian, Clarence Douglas Huffman and wife, Cristy, Wesley Eston Yankey  and Carl Lee Yankey; three great-grandchildren, Joe Alexander Huffman, Jacob Aaron Rousseau and Jessica Anne Rousseau.

She was also preceded in death by two infant brothers, Urshel Howdyshell and Boyd Howdyshell; and a sister Pauline A. Howdyshell Andrews.   .

A memorial service was conducted Sunday at the Emmanuel Church of the Brethren,  Mount Solon, VA with Rev. B. Eugene Shaver officiating.  A private burial was held at the Emmanuel Church Cemetery, Mt. Solon, VA.
