Janet S. Hammer

Janet S. Hammer, 44, of Kiser Gap Road in Franklin, died Monday, April 2, 2007, at her home.

Mrs. Hammer was born Jan. 4, 1963, in Harrisonburg, VA, and was a daughter of James Lee Sinnett and Betty McCoy Sinnett of Franklin.

She graduated from Franklin High School in 1981 and attended Shepard College. She was a member of Walnut Street United Methodist Church. She was a salesperson for Dick Myers Chevrolet in commercial sales for six years until 2006 and formerly worked at Hanover Shoe Company in Franklin.

Her husband, JC Hammer, survives. 

In addition to her parents and husband, she is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Heather Dawn and Gannon Aumann of Franklin; a sister, Brenda Sinnett of Ellicott City, MD; and one granddaughter, Wyndsor Aumann; and a niece, Stacy Jenkins-Dodge..

The Rev. Carl Tribett will conduct the funeral Wednesday at Walnut Street United Methodist Church in Franklin. Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.

Memorial donations may be made to the Pendleton County Volunteer Fire Companies and Rescue Squads.

Matthew Elder, 39

Matthew Elder, 39, of McDowell, VA, passed away on March 31, 2007, at the University of Virginia Medical Center as a result of cancer.

He was born May 7, 1967 in Alexandria, VA, a son of the Paul and Nellie Elder of Grafton.

Elder was a 1986 Graduate of Grafton High SChool, Grafton, and a graduate of WEst Virginia University with BAchelors degrees in sociology and agriculture.  He was a successful turkey, cattle and sheep farmer and also was an insurance agent for the Virginia Farm BUreau in Monterey, VA. 

He did an internship with the Franklin NRCS office in the early 1990s. 

In addition to his parents, he is survived by the love of his life, Connie Ann of McDowell, VA; a brother, Paul Elder, II, of Graton; a sister and brother-in-law, Amy and Rod Summers and their children, Sarah, Molly and Zac, all of Flemington; uncles and aunts, David and Janet Elder and Patty Bundy, all of Barrackville, Peggy Cianfrocca of Jacksonville, FL, Fred Pica of Fairmont, Sarah and Dorsey Cheuvront of Parkersburg, Betty and Jim Tennent of Sunset Beach, NC, Sharon and Mike Graziano of Ravensworth, and Nancy and Emory Elkins of Kingwood; and a maternal grandmother, Ruth Steinbeck of Grafton.  In addition to his many cousins, he had many wonderful friends.

Funeral services were condcuted Wednesday at the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA, with the Rev. Beth Pyles officiating.  Interment followed in the McDowell Cemetery.

Bobbie L. Raines

Bobbie Leonard Raines, 70, of Cherry Grove died March 26, 2007, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. 

He was born Aug. 13, 1936, at Cherry Grove and was the son of the late Bob Raines and Nola B. Hinkle Raines. 

He was a construction superintendent for 20 years for W.G. Lockhart of Akron, OH.  After retirement, he returned to Pendleton County in 1985 and enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with his family.  He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army.  HE was a member of the North Dry Run United Methodist Church, where he served as superintendent for several years. 

His wife, Mary Ruth Thompson Raines, survives. 

Also surviving are two sons, Bobbie E. Raines, and wife Christine M. Raines of Franklin and Billy E. Raines and wife, Luci of Circleville; four daughters, Wanda Lambert and husband, Mike Lambert of Circleville, Melissa Simmons and husband, J.M. Simmons, Jr., of Doe Hill, VA, Melody Jones of Barberton, OH, and Carolyn Smith of Staunton, VA; three step-children, Greg and Amy Lantz, Mike and Tori Lantz and Elizabeth and Todd Ashby; one brother, Bernard Raines of Circleville; one sister and brother-in-law, Delores and Dolan Rexrode of Franklin; 18 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and six- step-grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by a twin sister, Leah Belle Warner. 

Funeral services were held Friday at the North Dry Run United Methodist Church with the Rev. Earl Bible officiating.  Interment was at  the Hinkle Cemetery on Snowy Mountain Road. 

Memorials may be made to Mountain Hospice, North Dry Run United Methodist Church, Circleville  Volunteer Fire Dept. or the American Cancer Society. 

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin. 

Lillian R. Redman

Lillian Rosetta Redman, 94, of Petersburg died Friday, March 30, 2007, at Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg. .

Mrs. Redman was born Oct. 22, 1912, in Petersburg and was a daughter of the late Kenneth Redman and Luella Redman Beckwith.

She was a member of Gospel Temple Church in Petersburg where she was pastor from 1984-2003. She was employed at Fort Hill Motel from 1958-1984.

Her husband, Percy McGuire Redman, preceded her in death in 1984.

Survivors include four daughters, Celestine Redman of Keyser, and Naomi Redman, Gretchen Bruce and Karen Wright and husband, Conway, all of Petersburg;  six sons, Percy Redman, Ronald Redman, and Gary Redman Sr., and a special friend, Kimberly Thompson, all of Petersburg, Ricky Redman Sr. and wife, Debra, and LeRoy Redman, all of Staunton, and Kenneth Redman and wife Della Mae of Franklin; four sisters, Irene Gater of Petersburg, Lola Gates and Judith Redman, both of Cumberland, MD, and Carol Campbell of Keyser; two brothers, Calvin Redman Sr. of Petersburg and King Beckwith of Moorefield, W.Va.; 51 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two granddaughters, Zandra Redman and Loma Jamison, four brothers, Jobe Redman, Loui Redman, Kenny Redman, and Vaughn Redman; and two sisters, Hannah Lois Redman and Thelma Leoda Redman. 

Pastor Ronald Boyd conducted the funeral 2 p.m. Monday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg. Burial was at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Petersburg.
