Luxie Lavida Vance

Luxie Lavida Vance, 63, passed away on Monday, April 6, 2009, at the University of Maryland Hospital, Baltimore, MD.

She was born in Petersburg on Sept. 10, 1945, the daughter of Evelyn Wratchford of Petersburg and the late Merle Thomas Hitt.

She was co-owner and operator of J & L Vance, Inc, for 20 years and graduated from Petersburg High School.

Her husband of 46 years, Jack Vance, preceded her in death on March 26, 2009.

She is survived by two daughters, Trina Vance Duck of Pasadena, MD, and Jackie Kirtz of Brooklyn, MD; three sons, Stine Vance, Jack Eric Vance and Jason Vance, all of Glen Burnie, MD; one sister, Maxine Messer of Port Haywood, VA; one brother, John Hitt of Petersburg; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Rev. Stanley Kile will conduct funeral services on Friday at 11:00 a.m. in the Basagic Funeral Home Chapel, Petersburg.  Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Petersburg.

Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pauline "Polly" Murphy

Pauline Mae "Polly" Murphy, 69, of Franklin passed away on Friday, April 3, 2009, as a result of an automobile accident.

Born in Franklin on Aug. 16, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Robert Stanley and Nellie Rae Whitecotton Propst.

She was a member of the Wayside Baptist Church and a 1956 graduate of Wilson Memorial High School.  She graduated from Lynchburg School of Nursing and worked 29-1/2 years as a registered nurse at Pendleton Nursing Home.

Her husband, Ruskin Lee Murphy, preceded her in death on Dec. 18, 2005.

Surviving are two daughters, Maria Hottinger and husband, Patrick, and Lee Martin and husband Bert, all of Franklin; one brother, Larry Keith Propst of Franklin; and three grandchildren, Ashley Martin, Levi Martin and Colleen Hottinger, all of Franklin.

She was also preceded in death by one brother.

Pastor Danny Williams conducted funeral services Tuesday, at the Basagic Funeral Home Chapel, Franklin.  Burial was in the Ruddle Family Cemetery, Franklin.

Memorials may be made to Pendleton High School Sports Boosters.

Richard Allen Ceely

Richard Allen Ceely, 61, of Brandywine passed away on Sunday, April 5,2009, at his residence.

Mr. Ceely was born in Cornwall, NY, on April 11, 1947, the son of the late Frank Henry and Laura Ada Judson Ceely.

He retired as a Lt. Commander from the US Navy after 25 years of service.  He was also employed for 18 years at Honeywell Technologies.  He was a graduate of Cornwall High School in New York and Mount St. Mary's College and attended Living Faith Church. 

His wife, Michelina Mary "Mickie" Daddrio, whom he marred on April 24, 1966, survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Nicole Hevener and husband John of Franklin ; one son, Richard Ceely and wife, Crystal of Franklin; two brothers, Edward Leroy Ceely of Plattekill, NY, and Francis George Ceely of San Jose, CA; and five grandchildren, Amber Ceely Bogenrife of London, OH, Brooke Hevener, Daniel Hevener, Timothy Hevener and Kiersten Ceely, all of Franklin. 

He was also preceded in death by an infant sister.

Pastor Brad Mitchell will conduct funeral services on Friday at 4:00 p.m. at the Basagic Funeral Home Chapel, Franklin.  At the request of Mr. Ceely, his body will be cremated following the celebration of life service on Friday.  Military honors will be provided by the US Navy, Sugar Grove Naval Base.

Fmaily will receive friends on Friday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Thomas Gary Nelson

Thomas Gary Nelson, 56, of Martinsburg died Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at his home.

He was born June 8, 1952, at Baltimore, MD, and was the son of the late Fred D. Nelson and C. Jean Kimble Nelson.

He was formerly employed as a surveyor, was an active member of the A.P.A. Pool Association and shot pool for the Sky Lounge. 

He is survived by one sister; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at Saturday at Brown Funeral Home's South Berkeley Chapel at Inwood with Rev. John Lewis officiating.  Graveside services were conducted Sunday at Cherry Hill Cemetery at Upper Tract.

Local arrangements were under the direction of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin. 

Ruth Marie Harold

Ruth Marie Harold, 91, of Upper Tract died Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at Pendleton Manor in Franklin.

She was born Feb. 26, 1918, at Upper Tract and was the daughter of the late James Arthur Hedrick and Nona Lough Hedrick.

She was a 1938 graduate of Franklin High School and was a seamstress, having worked at the Franklin Garment Factory during the late 1960s and early 1970s.  She was a member of the Upper Tract Presbyterian Church, former member of the Upper Tract Extension Homemakers and the Upper Tract Fire Dept. Auxiliary and had volunteered for many years in the Country Store during Treasure Mountain Festival.

In 1939 she married Shyrl Harold, who preceded her in death on Sept. 4, 1968.

She is survived by one daughter, Frances Lawrence and husband, Kenny of Cross Junction, VA; two sons, Estel Harold and wife, Rosemary of Falling Waters, and Roger Harold and wife, Carol of Martinsburg; one grandson, Jeremy Lee Harold of Belington; two nieces and several cousins. 

She was also preceded in death was her brother, Ray Hedrick, on April 7, 1936.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin with Rev. Donald S.Wilkinson and Rev. Kevin Hand officiating.  Burial will be at the Cherry Hill Cemetery at Upper Tract.

Memorials may be made to the Upper Tract Presbyterian Church, c/o Louise Mullenax, PO Box 34, Upper Tract, WV  26866 or the Pendleton County Rescue Squad, PO Box 727, Franklin, WV  26807.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. 

Mary Crummett, 87

Mary K. Crummett, 87, of Blue Grass, VA, died Monday, April 6, 2009, at Bath Community Hospital in Hot Springs, VA.

She was a teacher in Highland County.

Her husband, Richard H. Crummett, preceded her in death on Oct. 3, 1993.

She is survived by her son, Andre Crummett of Blue Grass, VA.

Funeral arrangements were incomplete at press time and are under the direction of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.
