D. "Hurl" Mitchell, 83

Delmar "Hurl" Mitchell, 83, of Sugar Grove die d Saturday, April 29, 2006, at the Pendleton Nursing Home in Franklin.  

Mr. Mitchell was born July 20, 1922, in Sugar Grove and was the son of the late Benjamin Hurl Mitchell and Hattie Eye Mitchell. 

He graduated from Franklin High School in 1941 and attended Bridgewater College. He was a retired farmer and was a member of Francis Asbury United Methodist Church. 

He was married to Violet "Kitchie" Mitchell of Franklin.  

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Woodward and husband, Timothy of Bridgewater, VA, and Brenna K. Mitchell and husband, Samuel Cochran of Sugar Grove; two sons, Bradford Hurl Mitchell and wife, JoLynn of Franklin and Benjamin Wade Mitchell and wife, Dinah of Sugar Grove; a sister, Talma Hannan and husband, Harry of Winter Park, FL; a companion of many year Wiladene Simmons of Sugar Grove and nine grandchildren, Sarah, Alisha, Kristen, Rachel, Blair, Ryan and Myra Mitchell and Ginny and KayLee Woodward. 

He also was preceded in death by one brother, William K. Mitchell. 

The Rev. Mark James and Pastor Brad Mitchell conducted the funeral Tuesday at Francis Asbury United Methodist Church.  Burial was in the Sugar Grove Cemetery by Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. 

Memorial donations may be made to the Pendleton County Rescue Squad, Pendleton County Nursing Home or Francis Asbury United Methodist Church.  

Robert "Doc" Dove, 75

Robert "Doc" Worth Dove, 75, of San Diego, CA, died Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at Bradley Court of El Cajon Ca, and under the additional care of Vitas Hospice. 

Mr. Dove was born Jan. 30, 1931, in Riverton and was a son of the late Robert Dove and Kitty Teter Dove. 

He had lived 27 years in Ohio and the last 22 years in San Diego, CA. 

Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Dove, Son, Robert N. Dove of San Diego, CA; two daughters, Joanna Kay Dove of San Diego, CA, and Amy Carr and husband, Brian of Temecula, CA; four grandchildren, Dominic Howard, Gabrielle Howard, Eric Carr and Colleen Carr; one great grandchild, Talia Howard; two brothers, Gus Dove of Dover, DE, and Alton Dove of Riverton; four sisters, Lillian Teets of Seneca Rocks, Jeanne Bland and husband, Charles of Circleville, Molly Tidwell and husband, Carl of Decatur, GA, and Patricia Dickinson of Olney, MD. 

He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Betsy Galvin; three brothers, Bruce "Chip" Dove, Danny Dove and Ray Dove. 

Services were held in California. 

Sunday graveside inurnment services will be held at North Fork Memorial Cemetery in Riverton at the time of the Dove Reunion. 

Emma Helmick, 69

Emma Mary Helmick, 69, of Petersburg died Friday, April 28, 2006, at the Pendleton Nursing Home in Franklin. 

Mrs. Helmick was born Aug. 30, 1936, in Fairmont.

She was a home health caregiver and was a member of the Franklin Church of God. 

On April 14, 1974, she married Paul R. Helmick, who preceded her in death July 5, 1997. 

She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. 

Pastor Rob Borror conducted the funeral Sunday at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was at Blue Grass, VA.

Wardell Barkley

Wardell Barkley, 83, of Circleville died Saturday, April 298, 2006, at Davis Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Barkley was born March 5, 1923, in Crabbottom, VA, and was the son of the late John Barkley and Virgie Hedrick Barkley.

He retired from Winchester Building Supply and was a member of the Circleville Presbyterian Church.  He was an Air Force veteran and was a member of VFW Post 6862. 

On May 27, 1946, he married Emma Lee Rymer, who preceded him in death Jun 16, 2001. 

Survivors include three daughters, Judy Warner and Diana Hiner, both of Circleville, and Carolyn Steele, a resident at the Pendleton County Nursing Home in Franklin; three sons, Donald Lee nelson and Richard Barkley, both of Circleville, and Kenneth Barkley of Moorefield; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.  

He also was preceded in death by one daughter, patty Lou Barkley, one half brother and one sister. 

The Rev. William C. Cox conducted the funeral Tuesday at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was at North Fork Memorial Cemetery in Riverton with military rites by members of the Pendleton county Honor Guard.

Virginia McQuain, 83

Virginia Dare McQuain, 83, of Harrisburg, NC, died at 2:12 a.m. Monday, May 1, 2006, at North East Medical Center. 

She was born Sept. 6, 1922, in West Virginia and was a daughter of the late Robert William McQuain and Omega Madge (Sheets) McQuain. 

She was a nursing assistant at Quality Care.  She was a member of Roberta United Methodist church and enjoyed her life with her family and friends. 

Survivors include a son, Robert McQuain of the home, and nephews, Dan S. McQuain and Jeffrey H. McQuain of Potomac, MD.  

The Rev. Deval Mason conducted the funeral Wednesday at Roberta United Methodist Church in Concord, ND.  Burial was at Roberta United Methodist Church Cemetery in Concord, NC.  

Memorial donations may be made to Roberta United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 3925 Cochran Road, Concord, NC  28027.

Gary C. Calhoun, 61

Gary Carl Calhoun, 61, Mount Crawford, VA, died unexpectedly at 7:37 Saturday evening, April 29, 2006, at his home. 

A son of Nellie Armentrout Calhoun and the late Otha Carl Calhoun, he was born on march 8, 1945, in Pendleton County, where he lived his early life and graduated from Franklin High School in 1963.  Following his marriage, he made his home in Arlington, VA, and SE Washington, DC, prior to moving to Mount Crawford, VA, in 1965. 

Mr. Calhoun was a welder, a former owner and vice-president in the partnership of Transport Repairs and was general manager for 24 years.  He had worked for Shickel Machine Shop in Bridgewater, VA, for 15 years and was a maintenance technician for VDOT for the Harrisonburg-Staunton District at the time of his death.  He was a past member of the Mount Crawford Ruritan Club, served on the Mount Crawford Town Council for two years and was a member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the board of Trustees and a choir member. 

On July 23, 1963, he married Violet Mae Siever, who survives. 

Also surviving, in addition to his wife and mother, are one daughter, Krista Campbell and husband, Randy of Mount Crawford, VA; two grandchildren, Bradley Alan Campbell and Alexa Ann Campbell; four brothers, Lynwood Calhoun and wife, Lucy of Upper Tract, jack Calhoun and wife, Ann of La Plata, MD, Styrl Calhoun and wife, Evelyn, and Tony Calhoun, all of Upper Tract; and four sisters, Patricia Harman and husband, Warren of Harrisonburg, VA, Carolyn Hammer of Franklin, Noreen Alt and husband, Roger of Petersburg, and Judy Vandevander and husband, John of Upper Tract; a number of nieces and nephews and several aunts and uncles.  

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Cedar Grove United Methodist church with the Rev. Don L. Shull and Rev. Roy Hedrick officiating. 

A graveside service was held Wednesday in the Kline Cemetery near Upper Tract, followed by a memorial service at the Mount Horeb United Methodist Church at Upper Tract.

William A. Dean, 82

William Arthur Dean, 82, of Harrisonburg, VA, died Monday, April 24, 2006. 

Mr. Dean was born Jan. 28, 1924, in Franklin and was the son of the late William Franklin and Guerny Davis Dean. 

He attended the Salvation Army Chapel for many years and enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. 

On Feb. 14, 1945, he married the former Gertrude Winona Foley, who preceded him in death Jan. 27, 1981. 

Survivors include two sons, William F. Dean and Nelson R. Dean, both of Harrisonburg, VA; a daughter, Patricia A. Dean of Broadway, VA; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. 

Pastor Wayne Comer conducted the funeral Friday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, VA.  Burial followed at Weaver's Cemetery in Harrisonburg, VA.
