Mae George Byrd

Mae George Byrd, 76, of Greensboro, NC, died May 29, 2002.

Mrs. Byrd was born in Riverton.

She is survived by her husband, John F. Byrd, of the home; children, Carolyn S. Wagner of Lexington, NC, Terry A. Sponaugle of High Point, NC, John D. Byrd of Greensboro, NC, and Vanessa M. Singer of Mooresville, NC; a sister, Faye Blair of Philadelphia, PA; a brother, Raymond George of Harrisonburg, VA; grandchildren, John Gilmer, Joe Gilmer, Michael Sponaugle, Taylor Sponaugle and Kelly Sponaugle; and a great-granddaughter, Heather Gilmer.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Walter George and Lester George, and by a sister, Ruby Hinkle.

Funeral Services were conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. at Forbis and Dick, North Elm Street Chapel with interment in the Westminister Gardens.

Alma  Catherine Eye, 78

Alma Catherine Eye, age 78, of Atwater, OH, passed away Monday, April 22, 2002, at Robinson Memorial Hospital

She was born Oct. 28, 1923, in Cherry Grove, the daughter of John and Myrtle (Mullenax) Judy.

Mrs. Eye was a member of Alliance Baptist Temple.

Survivors include her sons, Robert William Eye of Green Township, Summit County, OH, Larry Eye of Windham, OH, Eugene Eye of Norton OH, and Randy Eye of Rootstown, OH: daughter, Jenna Lea of the home; special friend, Richard Douthitt of the home; sister, Yvonne Shriver of Cherry Grove; brothers, Roy Hartman of Cherry Grove, and Dale Judy of Illinois; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert Miles; three sisters, Glenna Marie Judy Ruddle, Maxine Ruth Judy Campbell and Carrie Louise Judy; one brother, John Delano Judy; and a special grandson, William "Wonker" Washington.

The funeral service was conducted on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, with the Pastor Tim Black officiating.

 

Delbert Rexrode, Sr., 85

Delbert M. Rexrode, Sr., age 85, of Doe Hill, VA, died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at the Pendleton county Nursing Home. He was born June 1,1917, at Parnassas, a son of George Harry and Carrie Virginia (Botkin) Rexrode.

On Oct. 26, 1940, he married Sheba Susan Smith.

Mr. Rexrode was a farmer and an avid ginseng hunter. He had worked for the CC Camp in Arizona and California. He was a member of the St. Paul Independent Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by a brother Paul Rexrode, and two sister, Virginia Crummett and Ruth Kile.

He is survived by his wife, Sheba Rexrode of Doe Hill, VA; three daughters and sons-in-law, Violet R. and Harry Eye, and Ellen Joeann and Dyer Moyers, all of Moyers, and Linda Margaret and Thomas Jones of Doe Hill, VA; a son and daughter-in-law, Delbert M., Jr. and Betty Rexrode of Doe Hill, VA; seven grandchildren. Pamela Rexrode, Gregory Moyers, Sandra Simmons, Michael Eye, Latitia Amirault, Cheryl Jolley and Jason Rexrode; nine great-grandchildren, Derek Rexrode, Aaron, Sarah, Henry and Stephanie Moyers, Bryan and Austin Simmons, Katie Amirault and Kyle Jolley.

A funeral service was conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA, by the Rev. Jerry Smith.

Alonzo F. Hinkle, 84

Alonzo F. Hinkle, 84, loving a dedicated husband and father, of Fort Ashby, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at the Dawn View Center, Fort Ashby.

Born on Jan. 16, 1918, at Kline, he was a son of the late Hobert R. and Margie Mae (Mallow) Hinkle. He was also preceded in death by a son Lynn A. Hinkle and two brothers, French "Mutt" Hinkle and Roland Hinkle.

Mr. Hinkle was a retired carman with first the B&O Railroad and later with CSX with over 35 years of combined service. He was a member of the First Wesleyan Church, Cresaptown, MD. He was restoring antique furniture and was an avid gardener.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Ethel E. (Mongold) Hinkle; one son, Barry S. Hinkle of Cumberland, MD; one daughter, Jean A. Hershey and husband, Darrell of Laurel, MD; two brothers, Jerry Hinkle of Burlington, NC, and Ona Ray Hinkle of Picqua, OH; four sisters, Anna Catherine Mongold of Winchester, VA, Norma Lee Channell of Kissimee, FL, Mary Lou Riggleman and Imogene Mae Phares, both of Burlington, NC; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Friday at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. David Paul officiating.

Interment was in the Duling Cemetery, Keyser.
