Herman E. "Gene" Grogg

Herman Eugene "Gene" Grogg of Harrisonburg, VA, died Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at his home.

A son of the late Early and Edna Smith Grogg, he was born in Sugar Grove.

Mr. Grogg served in the United States Navy as a Chief Petty Officer Senior Grade for 21 years before retiring. He worked at Merck as a supervisor until his retirement in 1992.

On July 12, 1973, he married Cornelia Justice, who survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Debra Lynn Perkins of Mobile, AL; one son, Michael Eugene Grogg of Fort Walton Beach, FL; three step-daughters, Cora Knicely of Dayton, VA, Linda Rosson, of Madison Heights, VA, and Vicki Propst of Harrisonburg, VA; one step-son, Raymond Lewis of Massanutten Village,Va; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, five step grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Shirley Shoemaker of Stockbridge, Ga; and two brothers, Jimmie Grogg of Luray, VA, and Dolan Grogg of Sugar Grove.

Private graveside services were held at the family's request.

The Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.


Guy Justice, 81

Guy Justice, 81, of Mt. Crawford, VA, died Sunday, July 1, 2001, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, VA, after not being well for the past five years.

A son of the late Frank and Cora Arbaugh Justice, he was born June 23, 1920, in West Virginia. He had lived in the Mt. Crawford, VA, area for most of his life.

Mr. Justice was the owner of the Valley Paint and Body Shop in Mt. Crawford, VA.

On February 7, 1941, he married Evelyn Teter Justice, who survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by eight children, Maxine Stambaugh of Carlisle, PA, Richard D. Warner of Harrisonburg, VA, William B. Warner of Broadway, Va, Margaret Henry of Beaufort, SC, Merle Justice of Harrisonburg, VA, Mary Alice McCoig of Danridge, TN, Faye Fulk of Broadway, VA, and Robert J. Justice of Dayton, VA; one sister, Cornelia Grogg of Harrisonburg, VA; two brothers, Frankie Justice and Freddie Justcie, both of Harrisonburg, VA; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at theLindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Lloyd Sprinkle, Carol Mottsinger and Clayton Justice officiating.

The body will be cremated and there will be no viewing.

Irvin Lee Thomas, 88

Irvin Lee Thomas, age 88, of Milam, passed this life Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at his residence.

The son of the late Thomas Jefferson and Nora (Kuykendall) Thomas, he was born on Dec 19, 1912, in Hardy County. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Mallie E. Thomas, in 1994, two sisters and two brothers.

He is survived by one son, Robert L. Thomas, Bowie, MD; one sister, Elaine Williams, Bridgewater Nursing Home; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Mr. Thomas was a self-employed farmer and care taker of the land, a member of the Zion Methodist church and a member and board member of the Peru Community Center.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, at 11:00 a.m. at the Elmore-Chambers Funeral Home in Moorefield with the Rev. Denny Shoemaker officiating. Burial followed at the Olivet Cemetery, Moorefield.

Eva Florence Hedrick, 73

Eva Florence Hedrick, 73, Franklin, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, VA.

Mrs. Hedrick was born December 9, 1927, at Franklin and was the daughter of the late William Harvey and Leah Zettie (Whetzel) Rexrode.

In addition to her husband, Luther Hedrick, she is survived by one son, Keith Hedrick; four sisters, Alice Rexrode, Franklin, Christine Breeden and Martha Rexrode, both of Harrisonburg, VA, and Margaret Wolfe, Waynesboro, VA; one grandson, Adam Hedrick; three step-grandsons; and one stepgraddaughter.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Ruby Eye.

The funeral will be held in the Chapel of Basagic Funeral home, Franklin.

Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin.


Bertha Alice Redman, 69

Bertha Alice Redman, 69, Petersburg, died Thursday, June 28, 2001, at her residence.

Mrs. Redman was born April 16, 1932, in Petersburg to the late Ott and Ada Ellen Cook Beckwith.

She worked for the Head Start Program in Petersburg, from 1970 to 1976.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Randolph Edward Minor, in 1953, and Lawrence Leon Redman, in 1984.

She is survived by her children, Randolph Phillip "Duke" Minor adn wife, Jamie Hall; Darla Regina White and significant other. Robert Whetzel and Larence Deon Redman and wfe, Shannon, all of Petersburg; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several "extra kids;" and her other mother, Mrs. Lillian Redman.

She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Flora Redman, Margaret Price and Rosetta Grandison; and five brothers, Dewy Beckwith, Emmit Gene Beckwimth, Howard Beckwith, Otty Donald Beckwith and William Robert Beckwith.

Funeral services were held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg with Pastor Calvin Redman and James Redman officiating. Burial was in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Petersburg.

Delmas Nicholas, 54

Delmas Nicholas, 54, of Cherry Grove, died Monday, July 2, 2001, at the Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

Mr. Nicholas was born March 25, 1947, at CherryGrove and was the son of Vervie and Anna Belle Bennett Nicholas of Cherry Grove.

He was never married.

He is survived by two brothers, Eugene Nicholas and Jackie Lee Nichols, both of Cherry Grove; one nephew; and two nieces.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Funeral services will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at theChapel of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin with Rev. William C. Cox officiating.

Burial will be in the North Fork Memorial Cemetery at Riverton.

Friends may call at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin after 8:00 a.m. today where the family will receive friends 10:00-11:00 a.m.
