Bertha M. Turner

Bertha Marie Turner, 83, Upper Tract, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001 at her home.

Ms. Turner was born Oct. 12, 1917, in Petersburg and was a daughter of the late Harrison Turner and Bessie Mae Ours Turner. She was a baker and a member of Mount Horeb United Methodist Church and the Upper Tract Fire Department Ladies' Auxiliary.

She is survived by a sister, Nellie Smith, Upper Tract; six half sisters, Eleanor Thompson, Upper Tract, Ruth Simmons, North Carolina, Catherine VanMeter, Rebecca Miller and Melva Cornett, all of Petersburg, and Virginia Pancake, Romney; one brother, Ralph Tuner, Roanoke, Va; two half brothers, Paul Turner, Petersburg, and Evers Turner, Upper Tract; and several nieces and nephews, including Macie Dahmer, St. Albans, and Mary Hedrick and J. Bruce Smith, both of Franklin, whom she raised.

The Revs. Gary Phillips and Glen Hamric conducted the funeral at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Horeb United Methodist church. Burial was at the Cherry Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Upper Tract fire and Rescue Squads, Mount Horeb United Methodist Church or the Upper Tract Fire Company Ladies' Auxiliary.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.

Mary E. Alt Sester, 76

Mary Ellen Alt Sester, 76, Baltimore, MD, and formerly of Brushy Run, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at her home.

Ms. Sester was born Feb. 16, 1925, in Brush Run and was a daughter of the late Scott R. and Effie Whetzel Alt.

She is survived by a daughter Shirley Cline, Baltimore, MD; two sisters Dorothy Sears, Petersburg, and Gladys Bain, Baltimore, MD, and Archie Alt, Sparta, MI; a grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Titus Alt, Galen Alt and Russell Alt; four sisters, infant, Goldie Alt, Viola Smith, Vernie Whetzel and Hazel Cosner.

The funeral was held Sunday at the Bruzdzinski Funeral Home in Baltimore, MD. The Rev. Bruce Cosner conducted a graveside service at 11 a.m. Monday at the Alt family cemetery in Brushy Run.

Talia K. Mangold, 19

Talia Kristen Mongold, 19, Cabins, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, as the result of an automobile accident on Route 93 near New Creek. Her boyfriend, Bryan D. Reel, died in the same accident.

Ms. Mongold was born Jan. 7, 1982, in Cumberland, MD, and was a daughter of Rhonda (Keplinger) and Michael J. Ours of Cabins and Gary Mongold of Dorcas.

She graduated from Petersburg High School in 2000 and was a student at Shepherd College in Shepherdstown. She was a certified nusing assistant at Grant County Nursing Home in Petersburg and attended Cabins Assembly of God Church.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by two sisters, Nikole Ours and Cassidee Ours, both at home; a half brother, Jordan Mongold, Upper Tract; a step-brother, Chad Helmick, Petersburg; her grandparents, Larry and Rose Wratchford, Petersburg, James and Patti Ours, Cabins and John A. and Alice Mongold, Dorcas; and great-grandparents, Mary Jo Wratchford, Petersburg and Janet Mongold, Dorcas.

The Rev. Stephen B. Landis conducted a joint funeral at 1 p.m. Monday at Cabins Assembly of God Church. Burial was at South Branch Valley Memorial Gardens in Petersburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grant County Nursing Home, 27 Early Ave., Petersburg, WV 26847. Arrangements wereunder the direction of the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.
