Mary Riddel Gildea 

Mary Stewart “Myra: Riddel Gildea, 91, of Reston, VA, died July 31, 2012, in Reston Hospital.

She was born in Kilmarnock, Scotland, on Oct. 11, 1921.

Her family moved to Arlington, VA, in 1928, and she attended school there. Her first job was in Washington, DC, with the F.H.A. Her boss was the man she married.

She was active in her Vienna Presbyterian Church and alternately attended St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Vienna, VA. She was a homemaker.

Her favorite hobby was golfing, and she won many awards for her expertise.

Her husband, James Joseph Gildea, survives.

Also surviving are a son, James “Jimmy” Riddel Gildea and wife, Carolyn Ingle of Franklin; a brother, William “Bill” Riddel of Florida; four nieces, Susan Sumpster, Jean Turner and Skyler Van Dyke of California, Cathy Riddel and Linda Moore; three nephews, Mark Turner and wife, “Jo Jo’ Joan of the Leesburg, Va, area, Billy Riddel and Scott Moore; a great-niece, Nikki Turner; and a great-nephew, Markie Turner.

She was preceded in death by one son, Jack in 1995; two sisters, Connie Turner and Joan Moore; and a brother, James Riddel.

Funeral services were held Aug. 4 at the Adams-Green Funeral Home, Herndon, VA. Internment was at Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Herndon, VA.

Ella Mae Smith, 90

Ella Mae Smith, 90, of Burlington, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012 at the Heartland of Keyser Nursing Home.

Born on June 26, 1922 at Upper Tract, she was a daughter of the late Luther and Lena Mae (Pennington) Helmick.

Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and attended the Antioch Church of God.

Her husband, George William Smith Sr. preceded her in death on Oct. 17, 1972

Surviving are one stepdaughter, Edna M. Mays of Burlington; two brothers, James Helmick and Luther Junior Helmick, both of Brandywine; and a large number of step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by six stepsons, John, Oscar, Jarrett, Sylvanus, George and Guy Smith; three stepdaughters, Esta Nabors, Etta Mae Canan and Martha Jane Hott; two brothers, Paul Helmick and Richard William Murphy; and five sisters, Mabel, Ruth, Anna Lee and Betty Jo Helmick and Lydia Kesner.

Funeral services were held Aug. 15 at the Smith Funeral Home, Burlington Chapel with the Rev. Larry Shrout officiating. Interment was in the Canan Family Cemetery, Burlington.
