Vera Ellen (Hedrick) Weese

Vera Ellen Hedrick Weese, age 81, of Maysville died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, at Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg.  

She was born Sept. 24, 1927, in Onego and was the daughter of the late Amby Hedrick and Annie (Kisamore) Hedrick. 

Her husband, Narvel Gleason Weese, preceded her in death on Feb. 17, 1966.  

Mrs. Weese retired in 1988 from the Hanover Shoe Company in Franklin and was a member of the Brick Church of the Brethren, Maysville. 

Surviving are three daughters, Virginia (Weese) Carr, Karen Sue (Weese) Kimble and Robin (Weese) Kuykendall, all of Maysville, one step-daughter, Bonnie Weese Alt of Baltimore, MD: three sons, Frank Gleason Weese of Maysville, Randy Lee Weese of Warrenton, VA, and Narvel Weese, Jr., of Morgantown; one sister, Artie Hedrick Harper of Warren, OH: 13 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. 

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Carolyn Jane Weese; four sisters, Zadie (Hedrick) Hedrick, Florida (Hedrick) Auville, Elva (Hedrick) Hedrick and Gatrel (Hedrick) Wratchford; and one brother, Willard Hedrick. 

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, with Rev. Robert Spaid officiating.  Interment was in Lahmansville Cemetery in Lahmansville.

Garner Paul Garrett

Garner Paul Garrett, 89, of Franklin and formerly of Baumont, CA, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, at Grant Memorial HOspital in Petersburg. 

He was born Dec. 9, 1918, at Flora, OR, and was the son of the late John M. Garrett and Addie Hackett Garrett. 

He was a rancher and an electrician in California.  He moved to Franklin, lived with his daughter and her husband for four years and was a resident of Pendleton Manor for the past two years. 

His wife, Lucille Morriss Garrett, preceded him in death in 1996. 

Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Don Harding of Franklin; three grandchildren, Donna Harding of Wasilla, AK, Michael and wife, Martha Harding of Indiana, and Jeffrey Harding of California; and a number of cousins.  

Funeral services were held Monday at the Chapel of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin with Pastor Sam Harper officiating.  Burial was at Montecito Memorial Park in Colton, CA.

Linda Simmons, 69

Ruth Linda Simmons, 69, of Sugar Grove died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, at Kindred Hospital in Richmond, VA. 

She was born June 18, 1939, in Highland County, VA, an daughter of the late Kenneth Blair and Mary Josephine (Splaun) Wright. 

On Sept. 23, 1961, she married William Howard Simmons, who survives. 

Mrs. Simmons was a homemaker.  she was a member of the Crummett Run Church of the Brethren, a 1957 graduate of Monterey High School and a former member of the VFW Post No. 9666 Ladies Auxiliary. 

She is also survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Mark Lambert of Bridgewater, VA; a granddaughter, Paige Nichole Lambert of Bridgewater, VA; two sisters, Opal Alt of Williamsville, VA, and Nancy McCoy of Richmond, VA; a brother, Marvin Wright of Verona, VA; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; and a number of nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by a brothers, Nelson Wright. 

A funeral service will be conducted today at 2 p.m. at the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA, and with Pat Godfrey and the Rev. Jerry Smith officiating.  Burial will be in Crummett Run Cemetery

Peggy Harper, 70

Peggy Anne (Warner) Harper, 70, of Dam Town Road, Ft. Defiance, VA, died Sunday October 5, 2008, in Augusta Medical Center, Fishersville, VA. 

She was born March 15, 1938, in Pendleton County, a daughter of the late Russell H. and Mary O. (Judy) Warner. 

Prior to retirement in 1995, Mrs. Harper was employed as a realtor for 20 years. 

She was a member of the Augusta County Board of Realtors, a former member of the Rebecca Kerr Auxiliary at King's Daughters' Hospital, a member of the Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church. where she was a member of the Craft Ladies, the United Methodist Church Women and very active in church functions. 

Her husband, Orris Dale Harper, of 64 years, survives. 

Also surviving are a son, William DAle Harper of Verona, VA; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy K. and Robert M. Augst of Richmond, VA, and Kimberly H. and David Aldhizer of Mt. Sidney, VA; two brothers, Chester O. Warner of College Park, MD, and Jerry M. Warner of Franklin; a sister, Naomi "Polly" Waggy of Franklin; and four grandchildren, Jennifer G. Augst, Robert D. Augst, Hannah K. Augst and Ashley M. Aldhizer. 

She was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles Russell Warner. 

A funeral service was conducted Oct. 8 at Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church by the Revs. John Crawford, III and Lee Seibert.  Burial was private.

Dee Franklin Hottinger 

Dee Franklin Hottinger, 64, of Ft. Seybert died Oct. 7, 2008, at his residence. 

Born March 5, 1944, in Ft. Seybert, he was the son of the late Isaac William Hottinger and Lena U. Dove Hottinger.

He attended the Pendleton County Schools and was an Army veteran, serving in Vietnam.  He retired as an automotive mechanic from Lou Zigler Ford in Harrisonburg, VA.  He was a member of the Bethlehem Church of the Brethren.   

He was married to Catherine Martin Hottinger of Petersburg, who survives.   

Also surviving are two sons, Mark Owen Hottinger and wife, Cindy of Inverness, CA, and Patrick Dewire Hottinger of Franklin; four sisters, Mary Dasher of Ft. Seybert, Kay Hamman of Stephens City, VA, Gay Marvin of "Buena Vista, VA, and May Harold and Harrisonburg, VA; one brother, Fred Hottinger of Ft. Seybert; and one granddaughter, Colleen Hottinger.  

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Albert Hottinger and William Hottinger; and two sisters, Velma Harold and Faye Propst.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, with Rev. Richard Lintz officiating.  Burial was in Ruddle Family Cemetery, Franklin, with military graveside services by Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

Leonard Handler 

Leonard J. Handler, 80, of Sunrise, FL, died Friday, Oct. 10, 2008.

He was born March 5,1928, at Bronx, NY, and was a son of the late Ben Handler and Estelle Cohen Handler. 

He was a garment manufacturer and had owned Shenandoah Textiles in Harrisonburg, VA.  He was a Veteran having served in the Army Air Corps, was a Rotarian, former president of the South Florida Blue Grass Association, member of the BCRCA and Conders Flying Clubs and an optimist of the North Miami Beach, FL. 

His wife, Bonnie Shreve Handler, survives. 

Also surviving are children, Dr. Wendy Handler, Emily Hernando, Julie Levy and Bridget Handler; step-children, Bradley Riggleman and Robin Jourden; seven grandchildren; two great-grandcildren; and a brother-in-law, Estyl Shreve of Franklin.  

He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. 

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday , Oct. 18, at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.  Following the visitation, Graveside services will be held at the Shreve Cemetery, Smoke Hole with military graveside services conducted by members of the Pendleton Honor Guard.  

Omar Wilson Sponaugle

Omar Wilson Sponaugle, 87, of Harrisonburg, VA, and formerly of Franklin, died Oct. 12, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Sponaugle was born May 29, 1921, in Pendleton County and was a son of the late Harness Adam and Levy Moyers Sponaugle.

He had attended Christ Central Church in Upper Tract and loved hunting and spending time with his family. He retired from the Hanover Shoe Factory in Franklin.

On Jan. 17, 1946, he married Rosie Sponaugle, who survives.

Also surviving are five sons, Larry Sponaugle and wife, Trudy of Upper Tract, Jeff Sponaugle of Harrisonburg, VA, Gary Sponaugle and wife, Kathy of McGaheysville, VA, Jerry Sponaugle of Grottoes, VA, and Mike Sponaugle of Staunton, VA; two daughters, Sharon Harper and husband, Henry of Monterey, VA, and Gretta Harman and husband, Alvin of Grottoes,VA; a sister, Annie Kisamore of Circleville; a half sister, Eunice Huffman; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by two sons, Earl and Terry Sponaugle; and a number of siblings.  

Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel, Harrisonburg, VA, with the Rev. Samuel Harper and the Rev. Edward Null officiating. Entombment will follow in the Eastlawn Memorial Garden Mausoleum.

Mark Novack, 44

Mark Paul Novack, 44, of Manassas, VA, died Oct. 11, 2008, at his residence. 

Born Aug. 18, 1964, in Washington, DC, he was the son of John H. Novack of Falling Waters and the late Delphia Pauline Lambert Bosserman. 

He attended school in Washington, DC, and was a service manager at M.F.I. Honda Kawasaki in Woodbridge, VA. 

Surviving are two nieces Kimberly Riggleman of Franklin and Brittany Novack of Washington, DC; two nephews , Robert Noavack and STacey Riggleman, both of Franklin; and one brother, John Novack of Washington, DC. 

A memorial service will be held at a later date.  

Eva Jane Bishop, 91

Eva Jane Bishop, 91, of Mount Crawford, VA, passed away on Sunday, Oct.12, 2008 at Avante at Harrisonburg, VA. 

She was born in Circleville, Oct. 9, 1917, and was a daughter of the late Martin and Anna (Lambert) Vandevander.  

Mrs. Bishop retired from the dietary department at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, VA. 

She was united in marriage on Jan. 17, 1958, to Roscoe A. Bishop of Mt. Crawford, VA, who survives. 

Surviving in addition to her husband is a daughter, Elizabeth Huffer of Harrisonburg, VA; a son, Gary Payne & wife Eleanor of Dayton, VA; a sister, Mary Sager of Bridgewater, VA; five grandchildren, Lisa Robinson and husband, Jay, Sheldon Huffer and wife, Rebecca, Craig Payne and wife, Shari, Eric Payne and wife, April, and Cory Payne and wife, Jennifer; and seven great grandsons. 

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Dana Huffer; and four brothers, Denver Vandevander, Stanley Vandevander, Harry Vandevander and Arvil Vandevander. 

A funeral service was held at Johnson Funeral Service Chapel in Bridgewater, VA, on Wednesday with Rev. Tim Thomas officiating.  Burial followed at Mt. Crawford, VA.

Jesse Arnold Koontz

Jesse Arnold Koontz, 62, of Brandywine died Oct. 8, 2008, at Wetzel County Hospital. 

Born Sept. 5, 1946, in Brandywine, he was a son of the late Hobert and Sadie Lynn Blizzard Koontz. 

He was a member of the Special Olympics and a Lutheran by faith. 

Surviving are a sister, Phyllis Heavner and husband, Jerry of Harrisonburg, VA; and three brothers, Jack L. Koontz and wife, Jean, an dJames E. Koontz and wife, Glenna, all of Brandywine, and Bob E. Koontz and wife, Dolores of Columbus, OH. 

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Roger; and one sister, Barbara. 

Funeral services were held Saturday at the chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, with Pastor Richard Fosdick officiating.  Burial was in Pine Hill Cemetery, Brandywine.  

Memorials may be made to Pendleton County Rescue Squad.
