Chester Lee Bennett

Chester Lee Bennett, 73, of Onego died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009, in Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, VA.

He was born June 8, 1936, in Onego and was the son of the late Estel Bennett and Iva (Dolly) Bennett.

Mr. Bennett was a landscaper and a member of Corner United Methodist Church, Cabins.

His wife of 42 years, Margaret (East) Bennett, survives.

Also surviving are one son, Karl E. Bennett and wife, Deanna of Littlestown, PA; one daughter, Melissa Thompson and husband, Steve of Gettysburg, PA; four grandchildren, Katlin, Tyler, Chester and Shelby Bennett; one brother, Clifford Bennett of Maysville; and two sisters, Vallie Kisamore of Cabins and Shirley Flohr of Augusta.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, infant Roy, Carl, Don, Foster and Paul Bennett; and six sisters, infant Violet and Ethel Bennett, Ruby Burke, Eva Patterson, Josie Payne and Merle Sites.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, with Rev Joseph Gerstell officiating.  Interment followed in the Bennett Family Cemetery on Spruce Mountain, Onego.

Darlene Bennett, 76

Darlene Bennett, 76, of Franklin and Damascus, MD, died Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, MD.

She was the daughter of the late Scott McCoy and Jessie Smith McCoy.

She is survived by her husband, Harlan Bennett.

Funeral arrangements were incomplete at press time and are under the direction of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.

Thelma M. Maxwell

Thelma Mitchell Maxwell, 86, of Bridgewater, VA, died Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, at Avante Nursing Home in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mrs. Maxwell was born Sept. 26, 1923, in Sugar Grove and was a daughter of the late R. “Ray” Mitchell and F. Katherine Hedrick Mitchell.

She was co-owner and operator of Lone Pine Service Station in Brandywine.

She graduated from Franklin High School in 1941 and was a member of Muhlenberg Lutheran Church.

Her husband, Ray Robert Maxwell, preceded her in death Feb. 8, 1991.

Surviving are a daughter, Linda Kay Looney and husband, Terry of Bridgewater, VA; a sister, Iris Pope of Montezuma, VA; two grandchildren, Rion and Kristian; and three great-grandchildren, Aaron, Brenna, and Kelton.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Robert Maxwell, in 1965; a daughter, Brenda Maxwell, in 1968; and a sister, Mary Bernice Yeakle.

A memorial service was held Sunday at the Muhlenberg Lutheran Church in Harrisonburg, VA, with the Rev. David Nelson officiating.  A graveside service was held Saturday at Pine Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Muhlenberg Lutheran Church Building Fund, 281 E. Market St., Harrisonburg, VA 22801.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin.

Esther V. Knicely, 98

Esther Virginia Heatwole Knicely, 98, of Mount Crawford, passed away Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, at her home.

She was born in Rockingham County, VA, on Oct. 16, 1911, and was a daughter of the late Melvin and Mollie (Coffman) Heatwole.

She was a homemaker and a member of Pike Mennonite Church.

She was united in marriage on Feb. 13, 1937, to Herman Wilson Knicely, who preceded her in death on Sept. 29, 1999.

Surviving are two sons, Boyd Knicely and his wife, Mabel of Middlebury, IN, and Wade Knicely and his wife, Rhoda of Mount Crawford, VA; six daughters, Hazel Shirk, Fay Brubaker and husband, Harold, and Elsie Showalter and husband, Robert, all of Harrisonburg, VA; Rhoda Showalter and husband, Larry of Onego, and Stella Knicely and Mabel Knicely, both of Mount Crawford, VA; a sister, Nancy Heatwole of Harrisonburg, VA; 16 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Fred Knicely and his wife, Dawn; one son-in-law, Mervin Shirk; and one great-granddaughter, Christine Hobbs.

A memorial service was conducted Friday at the Pike Mennonite Church with John Risser and Jerrel Good officiating.  Burial was private at Pike Mennonite Church Cemetery.

Nellie Guthrie, 94

Nellie Jane Mitchell Guthrie, 94, of Broadway, VA, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009, at Life Care Center, New Market, VA.

She was born May 27, 1915, in Pendleton County and was a daughter of the late Cyrus and Virginia Grace Nesselrodt Mitchell.

She was a homemaker.  She was a member of Bethel Church of the Brethren in Keezletown, VA.

On Dec. 19, 1934, she married John R.L. Guthrie, who preceded her in death on March 10, 1996.

She is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Naomi W. Bare and husband, Randolph of Fulks Run, VA, and Mary Grace Frye of Harrisonburg, VA; two sons and daughters-in-law, John D. Sites and wife, Darlene, and Donald L. Guthrie and wife, Cricket, all of Broadway, VA; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a son, John C. Guthrie, Jr.

Pastor Paul Glovier conducted a funeral service Tuesday at the Grandle Funeral Home Chapel in Broadway, VA.  Burial followed at Trissels Mennonite Church Cemetery near Broadway, VA.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
