EWING 1/4 mile from Greenbrier River...

Cemetery: Jos. Beard Place/Rhea Place/Joshua Ewing

  1. Gossman, Kent Re:Abandon Cemetery Mentioned. 09Sept2000. personal email and Pocahontas Co. Mailing List --->"... I am very sure that the abandon cemetery that is mentioned on the Rhea place is located about 1/4 mile from the Greenbrier River just east and pretty close to Denmar Correctional Facility. There is a small abandon church right across the road from it. The land was originally willed as one acre of public burying ground by Joshua Ewing who was on the land when it was still not open for settlement. He patented the land, and it has passed through a least a couple hands one of which was the Rhea's. It is now owned by a man named Hanley, and it was recently fenced off. Joshua's field stone marker from 1810 is there and still readable, there are a couple other stones with markings, one of which is slightly more modern for Catherine Rhea (referenced in the article). The Bath Co. Historical Society has been personally involved in the preservation of this particular cemetery, even though it is not in Bath County. Long story, but anyone desiring more details can feel free to contact me for more specific directions or list of stones. Kent Gossman, Port Orchard, WA. Searching for Ewings, Edmiston, Woods, Williams, Curry, and Smith of the Little Levels/Droop Mtn area. "
