    Ashley Carder
I am seeking the parents of Oliver CARDER, born 1819, died 1906, lived all his life in Taylor County. He had a brother, French (1822-1888), who moved in 1855 to Missouri, and two sisters, Mattie (Martha), who was single and lived with him in 1880, and Cassie (1816-1864), who married Elijah B. SMITH and moved to Preston County. I believe that these were the only children in this family. Other researchers have placed these children in the family of Isaac CARDER (1790-1865), which I believe to be incorrect. Isaac's will does not name any of these children. Also, Oliver's probate record names his only heirs as the children of his brother French and the children of his sister Cassie. French's son Luther gave a deposition that his father French had only one brother, Oliver, and a sister Mattie. Also, Isaac already has a daughter Martha and would not name two children the same name.

I am searching for any records on the MESSENGER family of Monongalia/Preston County, WV. My 3-great grandfather, Hira "John" MESSENGER left from Preston County, VA to go to PA in the late 1840's. He had daughters Eliza, Sarah, and Mary, and son Quinter. I am still searching for the identity of his wife, but they married somewhere in the late 1830's, most likely, give or take a few years. Hira's wife died between 1846 and 1850, but I'm not sure if it was in VA, PA, or en route. Hira was a circuit rider of the Brethren denomination. I found Hira in the 1840 Preston County Census index living amongst a number of Messengers, surely his family. The only other VA census index I have access to is 1810, where there is only one MESSENGER living in all of VA - Abraham MESSENGER. He is probably the progenitor of the family, and either Hira's father or grandfather.

I have recently learned that the middle name of Brown's Mill pioneer and Revolutionary soldier Thomas BROWN was SQUIRES. The BROWNS came from Loudon County, VA, as did the Nehemiah SQUIRES family who lived not more than a mile from the BROWN family behind the present-day new cemetery for the Bethlehem Church. This leads me to believe that there was a close connection between the SQUIRES family and the BROWN family since Nehemiah SQUIRES (ca 1766/67 - drowned 1727/28) was the s/o Thomas and Nancy Anne (TOLLE) SQUIRES of Loudon County. Thomas SQUIRES (???? - Jan 1780/Loudon Co, VA) was twice married. 1/m Mary ??? (d. bef 1767); 2/m Nancy Anne TOLLE. After Thomas' death, "Anne" married John PILES/PYLES. Anne and John removed to present-day Preston County, then called Monongalia County, circa 1800. Have a lot of information on the SQUIRES and allied families. Willing to share.
