I am searching for the parents of James Edward Graham who enlisted in
the Union Army at Frankfort, Kentucky, and served both in Kentucky and
Tennessee. When he left the Union Army, he walked back to West Virginia
in the dead of winter. He when bought or stole a horse and rode to New
York, where he enlisted in the Navy in January 1861. There was controversy
about him being a army deserter, but he was not a deserter. He was a river
man and not a foot soldier. His honorable discharge was signed by Gen.
Ulysses S. Grant in about 1865. His widow received $13.00 dollars a month
pension after his death. He served aboard a two wheel (240ft. long) river
boat named "The Gramples". In 1965, no one had been to his grave site
for 25 years because it is so hard to find. At that time, it was in a
cow pasture. His house was on a road leading to Hurricane, West Virginia
- 2 miles from Mt. Vernon. The original house burned and was rebuilt.
The old barn was still there in 1965. James Edward an! d his wife, Annie
Elizabeth Boyce-Graham, are buried on top of the mountain near the old
home place. Annie Elizabeth Boyce-Graham grave the land for the grave
site. James Edward Graham was born in Buffalo, New York, in 1840 and died
in 1884. I am also searching for the parents of Annie Elizabeth Boyce-Graham.
She was born in Virginia in 1840 and died in 1921 and is buried in the
Old Haggin Cemetery, Winfield, Putnam County, VA. Someone in this area
of West Virginia may know something about my ancestors. Any help would
be appreciated!
