Georgia B. Haddix
Georgia B. Haddix, 84, a resident of Lavalette Avenue, Elkins,
passed away at 3:03 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2002, in the Davis Memorial
Hospital.
She was born May 12, 1918, at Mill Creek, a daughter of the late Percy L. and
Carrie B. Armstrong Haddix.
She is survived by one daughter, Marilyn L. Potts Brown, Triangle, Va.; two
sons, Gerald M. Potts, Maryville, Tenn., and David W. Potts of Elkins; one
brother, Bryan Jackson Haddix of Orlando, Fla.; 13 grandchildren, 26
great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and
nephews.
Also preceding her in death were one daughter, Glendine Marie Potts Minners;
two sisters, Virginia Daniels and Frances Wiese; and one brother, James Haddix.
She was employed by Davis Memorial Hospital prior to her retirement in 1983 and
was a Baptist by faith. Her family will love and cherish the many memories that
she leaves behind. God bless you Mother.

Rev. Terrill Haddix
The Rev. Terrill L. Haddix, 62, of Backus, Minn., died Saturday,
Feb. 16, 2002, in Rochester Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
The Rev. Haddix was born June 2, 1939, in Elkins, a son of the late Ralph and
Amy Folks Haddix.
On Sept. 3, 1966, at the Church of the Nazarene in Grand Rapids, he married the
former Anita Baker, who survives in Backus, Minn.
Also surviving are two sons, Paul Haddix, Backus, Minn., and Kyle Haddix and
wife, Angela, Kansas City, Mo.; a daughter, Mrs. Barbara (Scott) Darger,
Madison, Wis.; eight brothers, Ray Haddix, Church Hill, Tenn., Carl Haddix,
Bowling Green, Ky., Arden Haddix, Oakland Park, Fla., Elmer Haddix, Canton,
Ohio, Glenn Haddix, Columbia, Verle Haddix, Amherst, Ohio, Bruce Haddix,
Elkins, and Jimmy Hokada, Marion, Va.; a sister, Iris Cutright, Elkins; and three
grandchildren, Hunter, Kyle and Chandler.
The Rev. Haddix was a graduate of Trevecca Nazarene College in Nashville, Tenn.
He graduated from the Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Mo.
He served in Bellevue, Ohio, for 1 1/2 years and in 1969 moved to Backus, where
he served as pastor of the Church of the Nazarene for 33 years.
He served on the Church of the Nazarene Minnesota District Advisory Board and
was a trustee for the Mid-America Nazarene University for several years and
served on numerous other boards and committees of the church. He was a member
of Backus Fire Department.
Funeral Arrangements: Friends may call at the Church of
the Nazarene in Backus, Minn., Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services
will be in Backus School Gymnasium Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Richard
Sickels, the Rev. Melvin Patrick, the Rev Phil Cox and the Rev. Edward Foster
officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Backus, Minn.

Wanda G. Haddix
Wanda Gay Haddix, 86, a resident of Route 1, Moatsville, passed away
at 5:02 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown,
where she had been a patient for one week.
She was born Oct. 15, 1915, at Moatsville, a daughter of the late Ellis and
Cassie Phillips McDaniel.
She was united in marriage Dec. 24, 1932, to George W. Haddix, who preceded her
in death on Oct. 15, 1974.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Berneda and husband, Gene Hardin,
Moatsville; one son, Perry Lee Hardin, Moatsville; three sisters, Della
Dmytryszyn, Baughman Towers, Philippi, Goldie Moran, Grafton, and Mrs. Harold
(Margurette) Boliner, Webster; two brothers, Wilbert and wife, Claris McDaniel,
Philippi, and Wilford McDaniel and friend, Judy, Youngstown, Ohio; two
sisters-in-law, Mora McDaniel and Ruth McDaniel; three grandchildren, Brenda D.
Dumire and husband, Fred, Sandra J. Bender and husband, Kevin and Duard C.
Hardin Jr. and wife, Regina; and eight great-grandchildren, William Gene Dumire
and wife, Teresa, Bradly Len Dumire and fiance, Jamie Lantz, Joshua George
Dumire, Christina M. Bender, Kevin L. Bender, Christopher H. Hardin, Thomas
Hardin and Oliva J. Hardin.
She was preceded in death by one son, Charles Holbert Haddix; three brothers,
Charles McDaniel, Stanley McDaniel and Odbert McDaniel; one sister, Cleota
Huffman; and one infant sister, Pearl McDaniel.
Mrs. Haddix was a homemaker. She was a loving mother, grandmother and
great-grandmother. She was a devoted caregiver to her son, Perry, for 59 years.
She was a member of the Clemtown United Methodist Church.
Friends will be received at Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St., Philippi,
after 3 p.m. today. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in
the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Dot Smith officiating. Interment will

Gerald D. Haden
Gerald D. "Jerry" Haden, 45, a resident of Mill Creek, was
pronounced dead on arrival in Davis Memorial Hospital emergency room Wednesday,
July 24, 2002. He had been in his usual health and death was sudden and
unexpected.

Gerald D. Haden
Gerald Delbert "Jerry" Haden, 45, a resident of Mill
Creek, passed away in Davis Memorial Hospital emergency room, Wednesday, July
24, 2002. He had been in his usual health and death was sudden and unexpected.
He was born July 3, 1957, at Elkins, a son of Geraldine Coffman Haden Mulhanes,
who survives in Indiana, and the late William "Dick" Haden.
He was formerly married to Ann Gear, who survives in Mill Creek.
In addition to his mother he is survived by his stepmother, Kathryn Haden of
Mill Creek; two daughters, Susan K. McCauley and Kathy L. Haden, both of
Moorefield; two sons, Gerald Haden Jr. of Indiana, and Billy Ray Haden of
Moorefield; two sisters, Pat Davis of Mill Creek, and Juanita Davis of Indiana;
one stepsister, Wanda Snelson of Ohio; two brothers, Marvin "Cookie"
Haden and Ricky Haden Sr. and wife, Juanita, both of Mill Creek; and several
nieces and nephews.
In addition to his father he was preceded in death by one brother, William B.
Haden.
He was disabled. He attended Tygarts Valley High School and had served with the
U.S. Army.
The casket will remain closed. Graveside services will be held Saturday at
Brick Church Cemetery at Huttonsville at 11 a.m. The Rev. Frank Long, pastor of
the Mill Creek Memorial Mission Church, will officiate. Interment will follow.

Mary Hallam
Mary Bright Butcher Hallam, 90, a resident of 61 Meade St.,
Buckhannon, died at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 13, 2002, at New Hope Board and
Care in Buckhannon.
She was born March 1, 1912, in Lewis County, the daughter of the late Fitzhugh
Lee Butcher and Olive M. Bright Butcher.
On Nov. 18, 1971, she married Dr. William Alton Hallam, who preceded her in
death on Jan. 7, 1995.
Surviving are a stepdaughter, Hallie Lu Peterson, Orlando, Fla; four cousins,
Mrs. Vernon (Betty) Singleton, Heaters, Mrs. John (Billie) Garton, Weston, Mrs.
Gilmer (Floda) Rexroad, Gassaway, and Linda Lou Martin, Ohio; and a special
cousin, Benny Singleton.
Mrs. Hallam graduated from Weston High School in 1930 and graduated from West
Virginia Wesleyan College in 1938 where she received her bachelor of science
degree.
She received a master’s degree from Duke University in Durham, N.C., in 1949.
She was given a General Electric Fellowship in 1953 and received a National
Science Foundation Scholarship in 1967.
After retiring from public schools in Lewis County with 32 years of service,
Mrs. Hallam joined the WVWC faculty in 1965 as an associate professor of
mathematics and was chairman of the math department from 1971-78.
Mrs. Hallam retired from WVWC in 1978 after 12 1/2 years of service.
She also studied at the University of Wisconsin, Rutgers University of New
Jersey and Kent State University of Ohio.
She was a member of the West Virginia Education Association, Classroom Teachers
Association and Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, was a member and president of the
American Association of University Women and Delta Kappa Gamma, and was a
former member of the Buckhannon Woman’s Club.
She received the citation of merit of Delta Kappa Gamma for the years 1968-72.
In 1969 she was given the Alumni Award of WVWC and was also listed in
Outstanding Personalities of the South.
She and her late husband received the Founders Award from WVWC in 1984 and were
recognized for their combined teaching of 93 1/2 years.
In 1990 the Orange Line was established at WVWC to which Mrs. Hallam was
appointed to represent the class of 1938.
She also taught a summer session of the Wright Field Program at WVWC during the
war.
During her years of teaching before marrying, she traveled extensively in
Europe, South America, Africa, Asia, Iceland and the United States.
At an early age she joined the St. Matthew United Methodist Church in Weston.
There she was active as a youth leader, class teacher, member of the official
board and United Methodist Women, and in other capacities of the church.
Friends will be received from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Poling-St. Clair
Funeral Home where funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday. The Rev. Alvin
Angle will officiate and interment will be in the Waldeck Cemetery at Weston.

Charles L. Haller
Charles Lynn "Jimmy" Haller, 68, of Stephens, Ga.,
died today, May 23, 2002, in Athens Regional Medical Center, Athens, Ga.,
following an extended illness.
He was born Feb. 4, 1934, at Nestorville, Barbour County, a son of the late
Athy Blaine and Lottie Marie Stemple Haller.
Surviving are four daughters, Tina Callaway, with whom he made his home,
Stephens, Ga., Connie Looney, Watkinsville, Ga., Carol Haller and Peggy Haller,
both of Baltimore, Md.; two sons, Tim Haller, Watkinsville, and David Haller,
Baltimore, Md.; one brother, Vernon E. "Bill" Haller, Moatsville;
nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild, several nieces and nephews, several
grandnieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Martha Lee Miller and Norma Gay
Shaw; and one brother, Robert Haller.
Mr. Haller was a retired carpenter in heavy construction. He was a veteran of
World War II, serving with the U.S. Army.
Friends may call at Stemple & Forman Funeral Home in Philippi from 7 p.m.
to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Sunday, when funeral services
will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with Pastor Bryan Headley

Martha L. Hanger
Martha L. Moore Hanger, 86, a native of Barbour County, a former
resident of Elkins, and since 1991, a resident of Minerva, Ohio, departed this
life Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at Alliance Hospital in Alliance, Ohio, following
an extended illness.
She was born Monday, Sept. 13, 1915, at Barbour County, a daughter of the late
Wade H. Moore and Dora Edmond Moore.
She was twice married. First, to Frank Koontz, who preceded her in death.
Second, on April 23, 1962, she was married to Robert L. Hanger, who preceded
her in death on Oct. 22, 1992.
Surviving are three sons, Warren Koontz, Minerva, Ohio, Charles Koontz and
wife, Sue, North Canton, Ohio, and Hobart Koontz and wife, Alicia, Elkins; one
daughter, Linda Williams and husband, Harold, Kensington, Ohio; one sister,
Bernice Trahern, Elkins; two stepdaughters, Doris E. Young and husband, Jake,
Naples, Fla., and Betty McGrane, Colorado Springs, Colo.; eight grandchildren,
nine great-grandchildren, several stepgrandchildren, several
stepgreat-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Byrd and Bretsel Moore.
She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars for more than 50 years, the
Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary for more than 35 years, the American Legion
Auxiliary and the Westside United Methodist Church at Belington.
Friends will be received at Bartley Funeral Home in Minerva, Ohio, from 7 p.m.
to 9 p.m. today. On Friday, Mrs. Hanger will be moved to Lohr & Barb
Funeral Home, where friends may call from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. Final rites
will be conducted at the funeral home chapel Saturday at 11 a.m. The Rev.
Donald L. Lockhart will officiate and interment will follow at Mountain State
Memorial Gardens at Gilman. The family suggest that expressions of sympathy be

Rev. David Hamrick
The Rev. David A. Hamrick, 52, of Rock Cave, died Friday, Jan.
25, 2002, at his home in Rock Cave.
The Rev. Hamrick was born Oct. 1, 1950, in Fairmont, a son of George Hamrick
Sr., who survives in Shinnston, and the late Helen Ann Felosa Hamrick Sr.
On Dec. 9, 1969, he married Charlene Perry Hamrick, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Jerame A. Hamrick, Shinnston; two daughters, Jackie
Butcher and husband, Shinnston, and Jennifer Barker and husband, Daniel,
Burnsville; two brothers, the Rev. George Hamrick Jr., Grafton, and Mark
Hamrick, Shinnston; two grandsons, Austin Butcher, Shinnston, and Dustin
Barker, Burnsville; and two granddaughters, Alivia Butcher, Shinnston, and
Amber Barker, Burnsville.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Joseph Hamrick; and a sister,
Susie Ann Hamrick.
The Rev. Hamrick was a pastor for Wilsontown Charge and was pastor for
Wilsontown United Methodist Church.
He was a member of Chaplain Banks District Fire Department.

Robert J. Hanger
Robert John "Bobby" Hanger, 59, a resident of 1512 S.
Davis Ave., Elkins, passed away Saturday morning, July 6, 2002, at his home. His
death was sudden and unexpected.
He was born May 3, 1943, in Randolph County, a son of Hazel Hart Hanger with
whom he made his home, and the late Virgil Crawford "Ikey" Hanger.
He had never married.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by two sisters, Becky Shomo Hintz of
Elkins, and Mrs. Joe (Mary Jane) Bertelli of Elkins; one nephew, Scott Ford
Shomo, Suffolk, Va.; one stepniece, Christina Bertelli of South Charleston; two
great-nieces, Brooke and Nicole Shomo of Suffolk, Va.; one aunt, Alice Hart of
Elkins; and several cousins.
He was a graduate of the Romney School for the Deaf and Blind in 1961. He
attended the Elkins Church of God and Family Worship Center, where he very much
enjoyed the Deaf Class held at the church.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home in
Elkins. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from the funeral home

Logan Lee Hardin, 2, a resident of Route 1, Pepper Community,
Bridgeport, passed away Monday morning, April 15, 2002, at his residence.
He was born Jan. 29, 2000, at East Ridge, Tenn., a son of Robert Hardin of
Chattanooga, Tenn., and Autumn Knight of Pepper Community, Bridgeport.
In addition to his parents he is survived by three brothers, Zackery Knight,
Skylar Hardin and Austin Hardin; maternal grandparents, Charles Wesley and
Kimberlie Altman Knight, Pepper community, Bridgeport; paternal grandparents,
Robert and Doris Hardin, Chattanooga, Tenn.; and maternal great-grandparents,
William E. and Blanche Knight, Pepper Community, Bridgeport.

Lucy E. Harlan
Lucy Eva Miller Harlan, 78, a lifelong resident of the Jimtown
community, departed this life Thursday morning, April 11, 2002, in Davis
Memorial Hospital.
She was born Oct. 7, 1923, at Jimtown, a daughter of the late Ward A. Miller
and Margaret Phillips Miller.
On Dec. 8, 1940, at Elkins, she was married to George Duard Harlan, who
preceded her in death on Dec. 18, 1984.
Surviving are 13 children: seven daughters, Carolyn Elmore and husband, Carl,
Jimtown, Mary Ann Hodgkiss and husband, Edward, Glenwood, Md., Mildred
"Midge" Thompson and husband, Roger, Elkins, Brenda Currence and
husband, Dennis, Tallmansville, Linda Biller and husband, Cecil Doug, Kerens,
Barbara Sams and husband, Michael, Parkersburg, and Patti Hodgkiss and husband,
Larry, Woodbine, Md.; six sons, William "Bill" Harlan and wife,
Dorothy, Adolph, Richard Harlan and wife, Terry, Jimtown, Kenneth
"Kenny" Harlan and wife, Doretta, Cassity, Dale Harlan and wife,
Anna, Jimtown, Bert Harlan and wife, Mary, Junior, and James "Jim"
Harlan and wife, Sandy, Jimtown; 31 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren,
several nieces and nephews, and three sisters-in-law, Leota Miller, Jimtown,
Jocelyn Akers, Charleston, and Pauline Bennett, Rockledge, Fla.; and one
brother-in-law, Donald Harlan and wife, Sadie, Elkins.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded
in death by one grandson, Anthony Harlan; one infant daughter, six sisters, Una
Bedford, Lillie Phillips, Margaret Harlan, Anna Taylor, Emma Rutherford and
Lila Miller; and six brothers, Harry, Earl, Paul, Clarence, Jim and Leo Miller.
Mrs. Harlan attended the schools of Randolph County. She was a homemaker and a
member of Phillips Chapel United Methodist Church at Jimtown.
Friends will be received at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Sunday. On Monday, Mrs. Harlan will be moved to Phillips Chapel Church at
Jimtown, where friends may call from noon to 2 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev.
Leon Hevener and the Rev. Donald L. Lockhart will officiate and interment will

Avis Ruth Lake Harper, 82, of 208 Pocahontas St., Buckhannon,
died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at her home in Buckhannon.
She was born Jan. 19, 1920, in Braxton County, a daughter of the late Homer
Duncan and Mamie Ruth Currence Lake.
On Dec. 12, 1937, she married Frank M. Harper, who survives.

Howard, Medford Lakes, N.J.; one son, David P. Harper, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one

She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star of Weston
and Frank B. Bartlett Post 7, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

Louise Harper
Louise Harper, 85, a resident of Harman, passed away at 7 p.m. Monday, April
22, 2002, in Davis Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
She was born Dec. 24, 1916, in Milton, a daughter of the late William Henry and
Lona Laura Mayse Conrad.
She was married to Robert Eston Harper, who preceded her in death in 1992.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. James (Betty Lou) Phillips, Belington;
one sister, Lelia Bonnstetter of Charleston, Ill.; and one granddaughter, Mrs.
James (Sherry) Poling, Manassas, Va.
Also preceding her in death were two brothers, George and Carl; and one sister,
Thelma.
Mrs. Harper was employed for 30 years as a manager at the Harman ABC Store
prior to her retirement. She was a member of the Harman Post 5781 Veterans of
Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, a former member of the Randolph County
Democratic Committee for several years, and attended Job United Methodist
Church.

George V. Harris
George V. Harris, 63, of Route 4, Box 600, Buckhannon, died Tuesday,
July 9, 2002, at his home in Buckhannon.
Mr. Harris was born May 23, 1939, in Century, a son of the late Basil Francis
and June Pennington Harris.
On Sept. 3, 1960, he married Iona Kesling Harris, who survives in Buckhannon.
Also surviving are four sons, Brad Kesling and wife, Sandy, George B. Harris
and wife, Marsha, David Harris and wife Lori, and Kevin Harris, all of
Buckhannon; one brother, Raymond Vawter and wife, Joann, Moundsville; four
sisters, Donna Sue Harris, Chambersburg, Pa., Sheila Fortin and husband,
George, and Jenny Iron and husband, Butch, all of Canada, and Vonda
"Eddie" Parks; two grandsons, Jimmie Kesling, Buckhannon, and Brad
Kesling, Vernal, Utah; three granddaughters, Tommie Loudin, Squeek Harris and
Stormy Harris, all of Buckhannon; two great-grandsons, Christian Darnall and
Zebulan Loudin, both of Buckhannon; and one great-granddaughter, Jade Kesling,
Buckhannon.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Midgie Harris, Leonard Wayne Harris
and Richard Boyd Harris; and one sister, Bertha Bonomo.
Mr. Harris was a former city policeman and worked at Cohart and Badger Coal Co.
He attended Kesling United Methodist Church and was a former lay speaker of the
United Methodist Conference and later an evangelist and preached for many
churches, Holbrooks Nursing Home and many revivals.
At Christmas time he collected money for the Salvation Army, was a chaplain and
volunteer fireman for the Ellamore Fire Department. He was a member of Kesling
Mill Lions Club.
Friends will be received at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home today from 5 p.m. to
9 p.m. Funeral services will be in the funeral home chapel Friday at 2 p.m.
with the Rev. Junior Harris and the Rev. Donald McCauley officiating. Interment

William R. Harris Sr.
William Randolph "Bill" Harris Sr., 68, a resident of the
Cassity community where he made his home with his daughter, Norma Harris, and Randy
Shreve, passed away Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, at 6:15 a.m. in the Oakland VA
Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa., where he was admitted on Aug. 29. He had been in
failing heath for the past year.
Born Nov. 13, 1933, at Elkins, he was the son of the late C.W. "Red"
and Gladys Moore Harris.
He was formerly married to Betty Sturms, who survives in Montrose.
In addition to his former wife, he is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Donald
(Anita) Taylor of Martinsburg, Norma Harris and Randy Shreve of Cassity and
Mrs. Luther (Henri Etta) Jones of El Paso, Texas; and three sons, William R.
"Billy" Harris Jr. and Clifford Harris and Brenda Shreve, all of
Valley Bend, and Donald "Tater" Harris of Montrose.
Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, Jason, Amanda and Jeremy Harris, Josh and
Donnie Taylor, Luther Jones Jr., Cassandra Harris, Justin Curtis, Jessica and
Bradley Shifflett, Cody and Caitlin Harris and Courtney Shreve; two
great-granddaughters, Makayla and Abigail Harris; one great-grandson, Neven
Shiflett; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family and was preceded in
death by an infant daughter and an infant brother.
Harris was a graduate of Tygarts Valley High School with the class of 1951. He,
along with his father, ran the Harris Dairy Farm for several years. He was also
employed by the Wimi Lumber Co. as a boilerman until becoming disabled. He was
a veteran and served in the U.S. Army. He loved talking to people and never met
a stranger. He enjoyed singing to all of his grandchildren and loved country
music.
He attended the Valley Bend United Methodist Church and was a member of the
H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans.
Friends will be received at the F.E. Runner Funeral Home Chapel today after 6
p.m. Funeral services will be conducted from the Runner Chapel on Wednesday at
1 p.m. The Rev. Frank Long, pastor of the Mill Creek Memorial Mission Church,
will officiate. Interment will follow in the Zirkle Cemetery at Cassity, where

Mary Jane Harsh, 78, of Parsons, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2002,
in Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.
She was born Feb. 22, 1924, in Thomas, a daughter of the late Henry Harry and
Nellie Mae Swartz Huffman.
Survivors include one son, Roy Ellis Harsh Jr. of Jacksonville, N.C.; one
brother, Norman K. Huffman of Lansdowne, Va.; two sisters, Ellen Sherman of
Parsons, and Lois Shaffer of Cumberland, Md; two grandsons, Timothy Harsh and
Roy E. Harsh III; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four brothers.
Ms. Harsh was a housewife and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Thomas.

Nettie Virginia Harris, 72, of old U.S. 250 south, died at 1:15
p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, in Broaddus Hospital in Philippi, following a brief
illness.
Mrs. Harris was born Dec. 19, 1929, in Philippi, a daughter of Nellie Pearl
Kennedy Barnett, who survives at old U.S. 250 south, and the late Everett E.
Barnett.
She married Louis Avery Harris Sr., who preceded her in death on Oct. 7, 1994.
Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Leon and Connie Croston, West
Mansfield, Ohio, Jeffery L. and Melissa Croston, Philippi, and Louis A. and
Charlene Harris Jr., Clarksburg; a brother, Everett E. Barnett Jr., Myrtle
Beach, S.C.; two sisters, Cornelia Comedy, Columbus, Ohio, and Betty K.
Pannell, Martinsburg; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Icilda Burns, Lenora Roberts and
Eloise Roberts.
Mrs. Harris was a homemaker and a senior service worker.

Ronald Paul Harrold, 55, a resident of Gateway Apartments, Elkins,
departed this life early Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at his residence. He had been
in declining health and death was unexpected.

on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the funeral hour. Interment will follow at

Ronald P. Harrold
Ronald Paul Harrold, 55, a resident of Gateway Apartments, Elkins,
departed this life early Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at his residence. He had been
in declining health for the past several years. However, death was unexpected.
He was born May 10, 1946, in Elkins, a son of the late Harry Edwin Harrold and
Stella Anita Houchin Harrold.
He was married to the former Cheryl Marie Meadows, who preceded him in death on
June 6, 1997.
Surviving are one brother, David Harrold and wife, Ruth, Elkins; and three stepdaughters,
Tracey of Richmond, Va., Kelley of Buckhannon, and Holly of Belington.
He was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1964. He began his
business career at his father’s grocery store, Harrold’s Key Market in 1965. He
briefly operated a gasoline station in the Crystal Springs Community before
joining the West Virginia Department of Highways. He was employed as an
announcer for radio stations WDNE and WELK for many years. He was a member of
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Friends will be received at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
today from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., the funeral hour. Bishop Lynn Muhlestein,
Elder Les Edinger and Elder Ralph Bennett will officiate and interment will

Delbert C. Harsh Sr.
Delbert Clark Harsh Sr., 89, a resident of Route 1, Kerens, departed
this life Saturday morning, March 30, 2002, at his home. He had been in
declining health since suffering a stroke in November of 2001 and death was
attributed to congestive heart failure.
He was born April 16, 1912, at Kerens, a son of the late Albert Luther Harsh
and Alice Butcher Harsh.
On May 25, 1935, he was married to the former Pauline A. Chipps, who survives.
Also surviving are one son, Delbert C. "Jim" Harsh Jr. and wife,
Christine, Kerens; two daughters, Emma F. Shurling and husband, Tony, Savannah,
Ga., and Ina Jean Harsh, Kerens; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and
several nieces and nephews.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having been preceded
in death by two brothers, Boyd and Alton Harsh; and three sisters, Vertie
Davis, Ethel Gainer and Ruth Metz.
He attended the Oak Grove one-room school at Kerens. He was a former employee of
the Elkins Tannery and the Navy ship yards during World War II. He had owned
and operated the Crossroads Service Station at Kerens and was a retired carman
from the Western Maryland Railroad, retiring in 1976, after 25 years of
service. He was a member of the former Hart’s Chapel United Methodist Church at
Kerens and attended the Calvary Baptist Church. He was an accomplished fiddler
and an avid hunter.
Friends will be received at Lohr-Barb-Vance Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
today. On Tuesday, Mr. Harsh will be moved to Calvary Baptist Church, where
final rites will be conducted at 11 a.m. Pastor Ralph Andrus will officiate and

Archie D. Hawkins
Archie Darius Hawkins, 89, of HC 78, Rock Cave, Holly Grove
community, died Saturday, April 20, 2002, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial
Hospital in Weston.
He was born Feb. 8, 1913, at Holly Grove, a son of the late Abe and Arzella
Ogden Hawkins.
He was united in marriage on Sept. 21, 1940, to Ruth Gillum Hawkins, who
preceded him in death in 1989.
He is survived by four daughters, Thelma Woody and husband, Carl, of Rock Cave,
Mamie Carpenter and husband, Otto, of French Creek, Charlotte Leichliter and
husband, Gary, of French Creek, and Mavis Shiflett and husband, Jim, of
Buckhannon; two sons, Joseph Hawkins and wife, Sharon, of French Creek, and
Dale Hawkins and wife, Wanda, of French Creek; nine grandsons, Steve Carpenter,
Danney Carpenter, Neil Hawkins, Terry Hawkins, Bradley Hawkins, Gary Leichliter,
Paul Leichliter, Craig Woody and Kevin Shiflett; seven granddaughters, Debra
Speaker, Kim Fogle, Karen Hawkins, Amy Tenney, Brenda Hawkins, Tina Hawkins and
Lora Bryant; 14 great-grandchildren and three foster great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three
brothers, Voris Hawkins, Oral Hawkins and twin brother, Artie Hawkins; and one
sister, Pearl Shaw. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Mr. Hawkins was a Methodist by faith. He liked gardening and working on his
farm and remembering the times he worked in the oil and gas fields. He enjoyed
his family and especially his great-grandchildren running around his house.
Friends will be received today from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Heavner & Cutright
Funeral Chapel. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pleasant Dale United
Methodist Church with Pastor David Jessie and Pastor Holly Hoover officiating.

Ralph B. Hawkins, 68, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002 in Colorado
Springs, Colo.
He was born Nov. 10, 1933, in Webster Springs, the son of the late Herbert C.
and Gladys Farlety Hawkins Lloyd.
He is survived by three sons, Ralph B. Hawkins Jr., Concordia, Kan., Joseph Hawkins,
with whom he made his home, and Donald Hawkins, both of Colorado Springs,
Colo.; two daughters, Lyndia Beer and Patty Hawkins, both of Colorado Springs,
Colo.; three sisters, Dot Welch, Elkins, Vivian Orlando, Weirton, and Sheryl
Birdsinger, Texas; one half-sister, Martha Lloyd, Fairview; and several
grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Chester C. Hawkins and Larry P.
Hawkins; one half-brother, Robert N. Lloyd; and one sister, Oleta J. Graham.
At the request of the deceased, he was cremated, and was buried in Colorado
Springs, Colo.

Augustine Haymond, 88, of Holbrook’s Nursing Home in Buckhannon,
died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, in the nursing home.
Mrs. Haymond was born July 3, 1913, in Adrian, a daughter of the late Lee and
Carrie See Booth.
She married Summers Haymond, who preceded her in death in 1955.
Surviving are several cousins.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Wilbur R. "Penrod" Booth; and
a half sister, Birtie Skidmore.
Mrs. Haymond was a homemaker. She was a member of Buckhannon VFW Post 3663
Ladies Auxiliary and a member of Ellamore Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

Haymond, who survives at Holbrook Nursing Home at Buckhannon and the late
Arnett Gerald Haymond.
On Nov. 17, 1990, at Buckhannon, he was married to the former Mary Frances
Smith, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Derry Ross Haymond, Elkins, and Christopher Allen
Haymond, Akron, Ohio; one daughter, Kellie Renee Strawder, Buckhannon; one
brother, Gerald Haymond, Fairmont; three sisters, Arletta Mick, Helen Allman
and Katherine Sue Higginbotham, all of Buckhannon; five grandchildren, Matthew
Haymond, Samantha Haymond, Tabatha Haymond, Daniel Strawder and Tessa Strawder;
one great-grandson, Mitchell Bowers and his wife’s children and grandchildren,
Joseph Warder, Arbovale, Holly Ball, White Plains, Md., Annette Sines,
Bainbridge Island, Wash., and Beth Wilfong, Slaty Fork, Drake and Charity
Warder and Jeremiah and Zachary Ball.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Billy Joe Haymond; and one grandson,
Patrick Haymond.
He attended the schools of Upshur County. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He
worked as a welder, having last worked for Century Limestone.
He was a member of the H.W. Daniel’s Post 29, American Legion and the Barberton
Lodge No. 750 AF & AM of Barberton, Ohio, and was a Protestant.

Allen Stanley Hebb, 92, a resident of Parsons, and for the past four
years a resident of Cortland Acres Nursing Home, Thomas, departed this life
Wednesday morning, June 19, 2002, at the nursing home.
He was born Aug. 20, 1909, at Tunnelton, a son of the late Solomen Elsworth
Hebb and Alice Maude Thomas Hebb.
He was never married.
Surviving are two brothers, Harry Hebb, Clarksburg, and Charles Hebb and wife,
Christine, Parsons; one sister, Lena Faye Taylor Neville, Cortland Acres
Nursing Home, Thomas; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Guy, Russ and John Hebb; and four
sisters, Mabel Fekete, Ethel Agnes Thawley, Blanche Manueel and Helen Miller.
He attended the schools of Preston County. He worked for the WVP, was a
construction worker and was employed at the Parsons Nursery for more than 30 years.
He was an avid outdoorsman and a Protestant.

She was born July 19, 1937, in Douglas, a daughter of the late Hugh Ronald and
Anna Mae Paugh Knaggs.
She is survived by her husband, Donald G. Hebb; two sons, Ronald
"Rainbow" and wife, Connie Hebb, of Thomas, and Wally and wife, Donna
Hebb, of Fredericksburg, Va.; one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Lisa) Myers of Larue,
Ohio; two brothers, Jim and John Knaggs, both of Tanner; and eight
grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother.
Mrs. Hebb was a housewife and a member of Thomas United Methodist Church.

Ethel A. Hedrick
Ethel Augusta Hedrick, 95, a resident of Junior, and a former
resident of the Poe Run community, passed away Tuesday morning, Sept. 10, 2002,
at Broaddus Hospital in Philippi.
She was born Aug. 13, 1907, at Elkhurst, Clay County, a daughter of the late
William Addison and Isabelle Rhodes Davis.
On Sept. 13, 1922, she married Jacob Earl Thomas, who preceded her in death. On
June 14, 1956, she married Gilbert Hedrick, who also preceded her in death.
Surviving are one son, Ralph B. Thomas of Junior; two brothers, Burton and Paul
Davis, both of St. Albans; three grandsons, Mike Thomas of Bryceville, Fla.,
Mark Thomas of Atlanta, Ga., and Danny Thomas of Junior; three granddaughters,
Shirley Hughes of Troy, Ohio, Cheryl Thomas, address unknown, and Sherrie
Curtis of Elkins; and several great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were five brothers, Howard, Luther, Meade, Lloyd and
Carl Davis; and three sisters, Alma Davis Hart, Alice Davis Boggs and Nina
Davis.
Mrs. Hedrick was a former member of the Clay County 4-H, and was a member of
the Ladies Auxiliary of H.W. Daniels Post 29, American Legion, of Elkins. She
was a Methodist by faith.

Fairmont; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Hedrick was disabled and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Hollin Hedrick
Hollin Hedrick, 61, of Whitmer, died at 10:25 a.m. Tuesday, Jan.
15, 2002, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, following a one month
illness.
Mr. Hedrick was born Jan. 7, 1941, in Whitmer, a son of the late Isom and
Virgie Marie Hedrick.
Surviving are two sons, Leroy Bennett, Lewes, Del., and Brian Hedrick, Beckley;
three brothers, Ronald and Blake Hedrick, both of Whitmer, and James Hedrick,
Elkins; and a granddaughter, Sarah Bennett.
He was preceded in death by six brothers, a sister and two grandsons, Kyle and
Seth Bennett.
Mr. Hedrick attended the schools of Randolph County and was disabled.

Willard Hedrick
Willard "Bud" Hedrick, 89, of Onego, died Thursday, July
25, 2002, at the home of his daughter, Bonnie and Garland Raines in Onego.
He was born Nov. 30, 1912, in Onego, a son of the late Amby and Anna Kisamore
Hedrick.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Macie Harper Hedrick, on April 28, 1992.
Also preceding him in death were four sisters.
Mr. Hedrick was a farmer and carpenter. He attended Seneca United Methodist
Church.
Surviving are one son, Sheldon W. Hedrick and wife, Paula, of Whitmer; one
daughter, Bonnie L. Raines and husband, Garland, of Onego; three grandchildren,
Matthew Hedrick of Whitmer, Robert "Bobby" Hedrick of Parsons, and
Christina Raines of Onego; one stepgreat-grandson, Donald Davis of Parsons; two
sisters, Vera Weese of Maysville, and Artie Harper of Warren, Ohio; and several
nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at Schaeffer Funeral Home today from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
On Saturday, Mr. Hedrick will be moved to Seneca Rocks United Methodist Church,
where funeral services will be at 2 p.m. with Pastor Barbara K. Rexroad

James E. Hefner
James Edward Hefner, 77, of Sharpsburg, Ga., died Thursday, March
28, 2002, at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.
Mr. Hefner was born to Clark and Eunice Hefner in Buckhannon in 1924.
After high school, he attended and received his bachelor’s degree in theology
from Moody Bible Institute in Illinois and later earned his master’s of
divinity from Liberty University in Virginia. When America called him for World
War II, he served in the Army in the European-African Middle-Eastern Theatre.
After deciding to make the military his career, he joined the Air Force when it
became a separate division within the Department of Defense and served in the
Korean Conflict. Before his retirement in 1965, he was stationed at Chanute
AFB, Illinois, as a parachute rigging instructor and obtained the nickname,
"Barracuda." After retiring from the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Hefner moved
to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and worked as a Florida state surveyor and was also
involved with airport security. He moved to the Sharpsburg area 10 years ago to
be near his daughter, Terri.
Mr. Hefner was a very active and hard working man. During his life, he was a
devoted student of the scripture, continually studying, reading and teaching
the Bible. He was a member of Sharpsburg Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Later Day Saints, a 32nd Degree Mason, a life member of the American Legion, a
member of the Air Force Sergeant’s Association, and an expert in genealogy.
But, despite all of his hard work and accomplishments in life, he will be
remembered for the simple things: his good nature and generosity toward others,
his love for nature, his exuberant personality, never meeting a stranger, and
being a "big kid" and a "cut-up" with his family.
He is survived by two daughters, Terri Lopez and husband, Jack, of Sharpsburg,
Ga., and Lisa Martin and husband, Lee, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; his
stepmother, Mrs. Mildred Hefner of Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, Calvin E.
Hefner of Charlotte, N.C., and Billy Hefner of New York City, N.Y.; one sister,
Mrs. Phyllis Vaughn of Phoenix, Ariz.; four grandchildren, three
great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and many friends.
Friends were received at Jones Funeral Home Saturday. Funeral services were
held at 7 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Bishop John Williams
officiating. Interment will be at Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon today at 2

Robert D. Helmick
Robert Daniel Helmick, 94, of Petersburg, died Sunday, Feb. 10,
2002, in Integrated Health Services of West Virginia in Charles Town, where he
had resided since April 1995.
Mr. Helmick was born Sept. 1, 1907, in Moorefield, a son of the late Job
Helmick and Laura Thorne Helmick Ours.
He was twice married. First, he married Verda Shirk Helmick, who preceded him
in death. Second, he married Cleo Keplinger Helmick, who preceded him in death.
Surviving are two half sisters, Lucy Hedrick Boor, Petersburg, and Mary Dell
Sites, Hagerstown, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Hobert Ours; and three brothers,
Ervin Helmick, John Helmick and Elton Helmick.
Mr. Helmick was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Brake
Church of the Brethren.

Edna Florence Martin Hensley, 66, a resident of 99 11th St., Elkins,
passed away Monday, April 1, 2002, at 5:30 p.m. in Davis Memorial Hospital,
where she had been a patient for the past six days. She had been in failing
health for the past several years.
She was born March 25, 1936, at Elkins, a daughter of the late John and Mary
Wyatt Martin.
Preceding her in death besides her parents were one granddaughter, Carol Sue
Stewart; three grandsons, Danny Jr., Joshua and Toby; two sisters, Lenora
"Nora" Smith and Helen Kleinfelder; and one brother, Harry Martin.
Surviving are six daughters, Lois England and Gilbert of Elkins, Lillie
"Margie" Hensley and Freddy of Valley Bend, Sheila Hensley and Jimmy
of Elkins, Karen Gardner and Melvin of Montrose, Valerie Guevera and Jamie of
Bangor, Maine, and Penny Gambrel and Don of Pineville, Ky.; one son, Eddie
Hensley of Glen Burnie, Md.; one sister, Jessie Spring of Jackpot, Nev.; two
brothers, John Martin Jr. of Pasadena, Md., and William "Bill" Martin
of Glen Burnie, Md.; 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, several nieces and
nephews, a daughter-in-law, Mary Ellen Hensley of Baltimore, Md.; and a close
Christian friend, Mary Jane Henthorne of Elkins.
Mrs. Hensley was a homemaker and had attended the New Life Fellowship Church.
She attended the schools of Randolph County and was a Pentecostal by faith.

Curtis L. Hepner Sr.
Curtis Leroy Hepner Sr., 92, of Jenkins Run Road, Moorefield,
died early Tuesday morning, Feb. 19, 2002, in Grant Memorial Hospital in
Petersburg.
Mr. Hepner was born April 16, 1909, in Mt. Jackson, Va., a son of the late John
W. and Pearl Craig Hepner.
He married Rea Cleaver Hepner, who survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Judith Judy and husband, Gerald, and Wilda
and husband, Carl Hogbin II, all of Petersburg, and Greta Lehman and husband,
Lee, Moorefield; two sons, Curtis "Buck" Hepner Jr., Enfield, Conn.,
and John "Mike" Hepner and wife, Hilda, Hampton, Va.; a sister, Emma
Jean Simmons, Moorefield; 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters.
Mr. Hepner was a truck driver and retired from South Branch Motor Freight of
Petersburg. He was a member of Baker’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

Mary L. Hermanson
Mary Louise Arison Hermanson, widow of Dr. Gordon E. Hermanson, former
president of Davis and Elkins College, departed from this life Saturday, May
25, 2002, in Minocqua, Wis., while visiting her son, Gordon Edward Hermanson.
She was born on June 12, 1918, in Sycamore, Ill. Her parents were C. John and
Esther Gustavson Arison.
Mary graduated from Sycamore High School in 1936, Wheaton College, Wheaton,
Ill., in 1940, and then spent two years at Biblical Seminary.
She served, with her husband, as a missionary in the Cameroon, West Africa and
she also taught kindergarten in New Jersey, Iowa and the Homestead School for
the Randolph County, West Virginia Board of Education. Mary was an active
member of Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder, on
various committees and Circle. She was active in many organizations, serving as
President of Church Women United for the state of West Virginia, and was active
for many years in AAUW and WCTU. Mary considered that her most worthy
contributions to the church were her 10 to 15 hours a week visiting the
elderly, ill, shut-ins and nursing home residents from 1964 to 1999 when she
was no longer able to drive.
She is survived by her two sons, Gordon Edward and wife, Kathryn Hermanson,
Minocqua, Wis., Robert William and wife, Brenda Hermanson, Princeton, N.J., her
daughter, Carol Ann and husband, Kenneth Mahaffey, Berkeley, Calif. and her
grandchildren, Kristin Britta and husband, James Keal; Robert Jeffrey Morriss,
Sara Kathryn Morriss, Johanna Margaret and husband, Steven Flythe and Herman
"Hans" Johannson Hermanson. She is also survived by three sisters,
Dorothy and husband, A. Maurice Dunker, Irene King and Ida Elaine and husband,
Dr. James Maxwell; one brother, John and husband, Shirley Arison; one
brother-in-law, the Rev. Robert. F. and wife, the Rev. Evangeline Hermanson;
and by nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon; her daughter, Mary Elizabeth;
her parents, her brothers, Lester and Quentin Arison and their wives, one
brother-in-law Everett King, and her sister, Jean Arison.

William E. Hershman
William Edward Hershman, 82, a resident of Route 2, Philippi, the
Tacy community, passed away at 5:59 p.m. Saturday, July 20, 2002, at his
residence following an extended illness.
He was born Feb. 13, 1920, at Tacy, the son of the late Lorenzo Lee
"Rennie" and Dorothy Blanche Freeman Hershman.
Surviving are two sisters and one brother-in-law, Dorothy Haller and husband,
Vernon "Bill," Route 1, Moatsville, and Betty B. Marsh, Route 1,
Moatsville; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Dottie Beatrice Marsh; and two
brothers, Buey Darl Hershman and Lorenzo Lee Hershman Jr.
Mr. Hershman retired as a machinist for the Lever Brothers Co. in Baltimore,
Md., with 32 years of dedicated service. Following his retirement in 1975, he
returned to the Tacy community. He enjoyed helping at the Tacy Community
Center.
In his youth, he attended the Tacy Cross Roads United Methodist Church.

Thomas Ison Hicks, 95, a resident of Dailey, passed away at 7:40
p.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2002, in Davis Memorial Hospital.
He was born Sept. 9, 1906, at Pickens, a son of the late Mortimer and Mary
Folks Hicks.
On Sept. 24, 1924, in Elkins, he was married to the former Helen Sturrock, who
preceded him in death on March 18, 1968. He was also formerly married to Mary
McNeal, who survives at Helvetia.
He is survived by two sons, Billy Joe Hicks and wife, Kathryn, of Dailey, and
James Paul Hicks of Livonia, Mich.; two grandchildren, Cindy Kay Nelson and
Thomas Earl Hicks; and four great-grandchildren.
Also preceding him in death were five brothers and six sisters.
Mr. Hicks owned a used car sales and was an auto body repairman. He attended
the Valley Bend United Methodist Church.

Waite J. Higgins
Waite J. Higgins, 87, a former resident of Mill Creek and a resident
of the Holbrook Nursing Home in Buckhannon since February 2000, passed away
Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002, in the nursing home. He had been in failing heath for
the past three years.
Born April 13, 1914, in Randolph County, he was the son of the late Dyer and
Susan Ann Martin Higgins.
He was married to the former Bessie Brown Higgins, who preceded him in death on
March 1, 1998. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by
two sisters, Ethel Shrader and Cora Taylor; and four brothers, Virgil,
Clifford, Thad and Willie Higgins.
Mr. Higgins is survived by one sister, Vernie Slayton, of Myersdale, Pa., and
several nieces and nephews including Mrs. Jim (Bertha) Tomey of Buckhannon and
Arlie Higgins of Akron, Ohio.
He was a woodsman and a member of the Mill Creek Memorial Mission Church.
Friends were received at the F.E. Runner Funeral Home Chapel after 7 p.m.
Monday. Today he was moved to the Mill Creek Memorial Mission Church for
visitation from 11 a.m. until noon, the funeral hour. The Rev. Frank Long,

Micah Liam "Buddha" Higham, 23, of Buckhannon, died
Saturday, April 20, 2002, due to injuries suffered in an automobile accident
near Uniontown, Pa.
He was born July 27, 1978, in Staten Island, N.Y., a son of Michael W. and
Jennifer Pacheco Higham, who survive at Route 2, Buckhannon.
Also surviving are two brothers, Richard and wife, Sharon, of Pt. Pleasant,
N.J., and Jason and wife, Debbie, of Virginia Beach, Va.; one niece, Sherilyn
of New Jersey; paternal grandparents, William and Ruth Higham of Staten Island,
N.Y.; several aunts and uncles, Felix and Marie Pacheco, John Pacheco, Richard
and Carmen Clark, Joe and Peggy Pantano and Kathy Higham, all of New York,
George and Maureen Kenny of Virginia Beach, Va., Patricia Higham and Ray Eckes
of Roanoke, and Gary and Cheri Chenoweth of Route 4, Buckhannon; and several
cousins, Felis and Ruben Pacheco, DeDee Vega, Joe and Jill Pantano, all of New
York, Danny and Phillip Higham of Roanoke, Raetta Eckes of Weston, Mary
Rohrbough of Ellamore, and Jamie and Sarah Chenoweth of Buckhannon.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Felix and Valda Pacheco;
and paternal uncle, Dennis Higham.
He was a long haul truck driver for J.B. Hunt Co. He was a graduate of
Buckhannon-Upshur High School with the class of 1997. He was a gentle giant
with a warm smile and loving spirit. In his short life, his one true legacy was
that he loved his family and friends deeply. We will miss him very much.

Albert Junior "June" Hile, 77, a resident of Horseshoe Run
Road, St. George, and more recently a resident of Cortland Acres Nursing Home
at Thomas, departed this life Wednesday morning, March 20, 2002, in the nursing
home. He had been in declining health and death was attributed to respiratory
failure.
He was born April 2, 1924, at Leadmine, a son of the late Albert Samuel Hile
and Nancy Mae Auvil Hile.
On Jan. 10, 1943, at Red House, Md., he was married to the former Lylah Janice
Kight, who preceded him in death on June 7, 2000.
Surviving are three daughters, Donna Elaine Cunningham and husband, Alby, St.
George, Nancy Mae Fansler, Elkins, and Joyce Anne Louk and husband, Randall,
St. George; one brother, Foster "Allen" Hile and wife, Dorothy, Holly
Meadows; one sister, M. Marie Phillips and husband, Tim, Parsons; nine
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He attended the Pleasantvale one-room school at St. George. He served with the
U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He was a construction worker and
woodsman.

May 25, 2002, in Palms of Pasadena Hospital, S. Pasadena, Fla., following a
brief illness.
He was born Feb. 28, 1925, at Belington, a son of the late Bernard and Virgie
Triplett Hill.
Twice married, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Evelyn V. Booth Hill
on Dec. 26, 1980. His wife of 18 years, Mollie Estelle Wheatley Poling Hill
survives at Route 2, Belington.
Also surviving are one son, Keith Allen Hill, Akron; two daughters, Rachel
Anderson and husband, John, Randolph, Ohio, and Melodie Smith and husband,
Blaine, Akron; four brothers, William Hill and wife, Betty, Akron, Herman Hill
and wife, Jean, Baltimore, Md., Howard Hill and wife, Imogene, Salem, S.C., and
Walter Hill, Belington; two sisters, Eloise Board and husband, Lawrence, and
Patricia Carpenter and husband, Calvin, all of Belington; two grandsons, Jesse
and Jacob Anderson, Randolph, Ohio.
He was also preceded in death by one sister, Betty Gross.
Mr. Hill was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy. He retired
from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., with 38 years service and was a former
employee of the Sun Rubber Co.
He was a member of Faith Way Baptist Church and was a former member Grace
Baptist Church in Akron. He was a member of Adoniram - Joppa Lodge No. 517 F
& AM and the Hilltop CEO Club.

Barbara Ann Hinchman, 58, a former resident of Elkins, and a
resident of Gallipolis, Ohio, for the past 32 years, passed away, Friday, April

She was born Jan. 2, 1944, in Randolph County, a daughter of the late Emerson
and Nettie Summerfield White.
On March 19, 1968, she was united in marriage to Richard Hinchman, who survives
in Gallipolis, Ohio.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Brad Allen Hinchman of
Gallipolis, Ohio; four sisters, Velma Dolly of Ripley, Emma Cannon of
Greensprings, Rita Williams of Pomona, Kan., and Joyce Trail of Belington; two
brothers, Ronnie and Willard White, both of Ravenswood; her mother-in-law,
Margaret Marie Hinchman of Gateway Apartments; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death besides her parents is one brother, Emerson White Jr.
She was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1962. Wile a
resident in Elkins, she had been employed at Neal’s Drug Store, working in the
darkroom, developing all pictures. She also had worked at Reidbord. She was a
member of the Apololistic Doctrine Church of Harman and was a Pentecostal by
faith.
Friends will be received at F.E. Runner Funeral Home today after 6 p.m. Funeral
services will be conducted from the Runner chapel Tuesday at 11 a.m. The Rev.
A.H. Belt, pastor of the Gospel Light Tabernacle, will officiate. Interment

away at 3:15 a.m. Thursday, March 28, 2002, at her home following an extended
illness.
She was born Aug. 6, 1930, at Flint, a daughter of the late Michael and Ruby
Blankenship Holenchick.
On Sept. 5, 1948, in Oakland, Md., she was married to Robert K. Hinkle, who
survives in Crystal Springs.
Also surviving are one son, John Ray Hinkle, Honolulu, Hawaii; two daughters,
Mrs. Ronnie (Connie Jane) Kemrite and Mrs. Jim (Lynn Ann) Ritter, both of
Elkins; three brothers, Robert Holenchick, John Holenchick and Charles
Holenchick, all of Salem, Ohio; three sisters, Lucille Smith, Elizabeth May and
Theresa Houchins, all of Salem, Ohio; two grandsons, Corey and Alex Ritter.
Also preceding her in death were one brother, Michael Holenchick Jr.; and one
half brother, William Hull.
Mrs. Hinkle was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church of
Elkins.

Glenn E. Hinkle, 88, of 153 Captain Point, St. Augustine, Fla.,
died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, in Mariner Health Care Center in St. Augustine,
Fla.
Mr. Hinkle was born Oct. 6, 1913, in Queens, a son of the late Hugh and Lola
Cutright Hinkle.
He married Ocie V. Lang Hinkle, who survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Marilyn Gillespie, Fairmont, Iris Metzger,
St. Augustine, Fla., and Laura Jean Orem, Ormond Beach, Fla.; three sons,

Mr. Hinkle worked for many years as a salesman for Fairmont Wall Plaster Co.
After moving to Manassas, Va., and prior to retirement, he was a salesman for
Brown & Hoeff Hardware in Manassas, Va.

Willetta Goddin Hinkle
Willetta Goddin Hinkle, 85, a long-time educator, artisan and
community leader, a resident of 214 Diamond St., Elkins, and for a short time a
resident of Good Samaritan Center at Belington, departed this life at 3:09 p.m.
Tuesday, March 26, 2002, in Davis Memorial Hospital, following a brief illness.
Death was attributed to pneumonia.
She was born Jan. 20, 1917, at Stalnaker Run, near Elkins, a daughter of the
late Thomas Jefferson Goddin and Albina Hattie Stalnaker Goddin. She was one of
eight children who grew up on a farm during the Great Depression and attended
the nearby Vandergrift School and entered Elkins High School, from which she
graduated in 1935.
Education was highly valued at the Goddin household and seven family members
became teachers, artisans and musicians. Following graduation from high school
she received an bachelor of arts degree in education from Davis & Elkins
College and later received two master’s degrees, one in education and one in
art, from Case Western Reserve and did other studies at West Virginia
University, Morris Harvey College and Kent State University.
During her 33-year teaching career, she taught at Bemis, Marstiller, Durbin,
and Helvetia grade schools before relocating to Chesterland, Ohio, where she
lived and taught in Geauga County Schools for 11 years. She returned to
Randolph County, where she taught art at Elkins Junior High School and later
served as an itinerant art instructor at North, First Ward and Central School
in Elkins.
Besides her many educational interests and accomplishments, she was active in
community service. After retirement, she served for one term during the 1980s
as a member of the Randolph County Board of Education, where she promoted
improvements in the instructional program and facilities.
Hinkle, who friends said was affectionately known as "Pudge", was
identified in her high school yearbook as one whose "art work would bring
fame to her and her alma mater." As an artist and musician, she presented
hundreds of classes, demonstrations and exhibitions over the years in balladry,
spinning and weaving, basketry, bobbin lacing, vegetable dyeing, beeswax candle
dipping, paper sculpture, origami, hand-formed pottery from native clay, corn
husk and pine needle projects, tatting and quilting.
She was affiliated with the Augusta Heritage Arts Program at Davis & Elkins
College and an instructor, coordinator and supporter, since its inception in
1972. She assisted in initiating the Elderhostel Program at the Augusta
Heritage Center.
She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, where she was active in
the choir, youth fellowship program, Circle 2 and as a Sunday School Teacher
for Irons Bible Class. She was a leader and founder of the Hi-Fi 4-H Club and
active with the West Virginia University Extension Service and the
Marstiller-Orlena CEOS Club.
Following the death of her sister, Sadavioe, also a D&E alumna, a large
collection of Lincoln memorabilia collected over a period of 70 years by her
sister, was donated in 1996 to D&E College by Willetta.
In March 2000, she was recognized as Outstanding Citizen of the Year by the
Randolph County Chamber of Commerce for her many contributions to the community
heritage arts and crafts.
Hinkle served as a regent of John Hart Chapter of the Daughters of the American
Revolution and served as director of the Randolph County Historical Society,
where she assisted with the relocation of the old Stalnaker log house to the
society’s property in Beverly. Her interest in history led her to co-author a
book titled "School Memories" a book about school life in Randolph
County’s many rural schools.
She was also affiliated with Lambda Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, Seneca Trail
Arts Guild, National League of American Pen Women, West Virginia State
Archeology Society, West Virginia Women Writers, National Museum of Women in
the Arts, Rich Mountain Battlefield Foundation, Center for Evangelical United
Brethren Heritage, Stalnaker Family Assoc., Elkins-Randolph County Public Library,
Mountain State Press, Randolph County Recreational Board, trustee for the
Gilman Cemetery and the Chenoweth Cemetery, Randolph and County and West
Virginia Association of Retried School Employees, American Association of
Retired Persons, Elkins-Randolph County Senior Center, the Good Shepherd Board
of Directors and the Davis & Elkins Alumni Association
She is survived by an older sister, 101-year-old Rebecca Marstiller; one son,
Dr. Andrew Lee Hinkle, Columbus, Ohio; grandsons, Aaron Henry Lee Hinkle and
Andrew Ralph Hinkle, with Erika Galvao, new parents of great-grandson,
Nickolas, living in Brazil and granddaughter, Hillary and husband, Jack Joyce,
parent of great-grandson, Sam; and great-granddaughter, Claire, Maryland; and
several nieces and nephews.
She married Don Lee Hinkle on Dec. 7, 1942.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Rebecca Tamasin Hinkle, who died at
birth; two brothers, Robert L. and Willard G. Goddin; four sisters, Opal M.
Henline, Waunita B. Kappal, Gwendeline Boone and Sadavioe Goddin.
Friends will be received at Lohr-Barb-Vance Funeral home from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Michael Ray Hissam, 34, of Kanawha Head, died Saturday, June 1,
2002, at his home.
He was born July 3, 1967, in Buckhannon, a son of Okey and Anna Lee West
Hissam, who survive at Kanawha Head.
Also surviving are one brother, Jeffrey Todd Hissam, Eden; paternal
grandmother, Arnie Light Hissam of Kanawha Head; and several aunts and uncles.

Dan Tracy Hoffman, 51, of Route 1, Moatsville, died Tuesday, July 2,
2002, in the Montefiore Hospital University of Pittsburgh Medical Center,
Pittsburgh, following an extended illness.
He was born March 23, 1951, at Moatsville, a son of Mary M. Blake Hoffman, who
survives at Moatsville, and the late Arlin James Hoffman.
Surviving in addition to his mother, are one son, Matthew Jason Hoffman,
Philippi; one stepson, Jonathan Crites, Philippi; three brothers, Frank James
Hoffman and wife, Dorothy, and David Hoffman, all of Moatsville, and Gary Lee
Hoffman and wife, Janet, Belington; two sisters, Anna Lea Isner and husband,
Bob, Marietta, Ohio, and Violet R. Campbell, Moatsville; and two grandchildren,
Mykal Michelle Sage Hoffman and Tarren Michel Beau Kisner.
Mr. Hoffman was a retired coal miner and construction equipment operator. He
attended the Free Gospel Church at Moatsville.

Dr. John W. Hogan
Dr. John W. Hogan, 66, a resident of Hurricane, passed away
Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at Thomas Memorial Hospital in Charleston after a
short illness.
He was born Jan. 20, 1936, at Monterville, a son of the late William Wesley and
Belva Mae Channell Hogan.
He was married to the former Geneva M. Snyder, who survives at Hurricane.
Also surviving are four children, Vera Standish and Gayle Allison, both of
Hurricane, Rae Anne Blair of Shinnston, and Lee Hogan of Kanawha County; two
stepchildren, Eric Brian Jones of Charleston and Melissa Davis of Orlando,

He was preceded in death by two brothers, George Edmond Hogan and William
Sherman Hogan; and one sister, Lucy Prosser.
Mr. Hogan earned his bachelor’s degree in 1957 from Berea College, Berea, Ky.,
his master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1959 and his
doctorate from Virginia Polytechnic Institute at Blacksburg, Va. in 1969. He
was a retired math professor from Marshall University with 29 years of service
and a former chairman of Marshall University Math Department. He was a member
of the American Mathematical Society, Mathematical Association of America and
the West Virginia Academy of Science.

Earl Duane Holbert, 65, a resident of Route 4, (Mt. Liberty
community) Philippi, passed away at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at his
residence.
He was born Nov. 24, 1936, at Philippi, a son of the late Earl Clyde and Freda
A. Mackey Holbert.
He was united in marriage to the former Donna L. Wiles, who preceded him in
death in 1982.
Surviving are four sons, Lesley W. Holbert, Omaha, Neb., Danny C. Holbert, Mt.
Liberty community, Philippi, Billy W. Holbert, Union community, Philippi, and
Denny E. Holbert, Belington; one sister, Loraine Rohr, Springfield, Ill.; one

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Lester, Dwight, Ralph and Milford

Bobby B. Hollen, 79, a resident of 108 Hall St., Philippi, passed
away at 5:18 a.m. Wednesday, June 5, 2002, in Broaddus Hospital.
He was born Oct. 26, 1922, at Philippi, a son of the late Blonda Sr. and Grace
Beohm Hollen.
He was united in marriage on Nov. 7, 1942, to the former Helen Eloise Ashby,
who preceded him in death on March 19, 2001.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Robert Bruce and wife, Lorna Tenney
Hollen, 108 Hall St., Philippi; and three brothers, Kermit C. Hollen, Kyle M.
Hollen and Blonda Hollen Jr., all of Philippi.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Billie S. Hollen.
He retired as a regional service technician for Columbia Gas. He was a veteran
of World War II, serving with the U.S. Air Corp.
He was a former member of Bigelow Lodge AF & AM, a member and past
president of Philippi Lions Club, past member of Barbour County Board of
Education, an in-active member of the Philippi Fire Department and a member of
the American Legion Post 44.
He worked with the drug abusers program. He was a member of Crim Memorial
United Methodist Church, where he served as adult Sunday School Teacher and
served on the finance committee and was a member of the prayer group.

Patsy "Pokey" Hollen, 44, of 28 Meadow St.,
Buckhannon, died Friday, March 1, 2002, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
Mrs. Hollen was born May 11, 1957, in Lewis County, a daughter of the late Roy
E. and Mary Marguerite Heckert Hitt.
On June 18, 1991, she married Kevin Hollen, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Jennifer Arbogast and Laure Hite, both of
Buckhannon; four sisters, Sharon Perrine, Weston, Barbara Watson, Jane Lew,

Homer W. Howes
Homer Warren Howes, 75, of Route 2, French Creek, the Evergreen
community, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, May 2, 2002, at his home
under the care of St. Joseph’s Hospice.
Mr. Howes was born May 14, 1926, in Evergreen, a son of the late William A. and
Sophronia Phillips Howes.
On Sept. 20, 1947, he married Betty Jean Loudin Howes, who survives at
Evergreen.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, David Howes and wife, Janet,
Eagle Rock, Va., Kevin Howes and wife, Cheryl, and Mark Howes and wife, Kathy,
all of French Creek; six daughters, Charlotte McCann and husband, Stanford,
Janice Cain and husband, Terry, Robyn McCann and husband, Ronnie, Alice Cain
and husband, Laird, Laurie Young and husband, John, and Angela Fassett and
husband, Greg, all of French Creek; three sisters, Arlene Friend, Buckhannon,
and Blanche Howes and Beryl Loudin, both of Ohio; 24 grandchildren and eight
great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first son, Donald Warren; his mother and
father, two brothers and three sisters.
Mr. Howes served in the U.S. Army in German. He was a mechanic with Koon’s
Welding in Buckhannon.
Friends will be received at Tomblyn-Whitescarver Funeral Chapel Saturday from 5
p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be in the funeral home chapel Sunday at 2
p.m. with the Rev. David Jessie officiating. Interment will follow in Waterloo

Joseph R. Howes
Joseph R. Howes, 81, of Buckhannon, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, in
Nella's Nursing Home in Elkins.
Mr. Howes was born June 7, 1920, in Mabie, a son of the late William Bruce and
Myrtle Currence Howes.
He married Mary V. Loudin Howes, who survives in Buckhannon.
Also surviving are three children, Wayne Allen Howes, Clarksville, Tenn., Lois
Ann Howell and husband, Kenneth Webster, Buckhannon, and Harold Ray Howes and
wife, Retha Imogene, Crawford; eight grandchildren, Geoffrey Howes and Greggory
Howes, both of Clarksville, Tenn., Robert Longerbeam, Clarksburg, Kimberly
Thomas, Craig Howell and Jason Howes, all of Buckhannon, Sarah Howes and Donna
Jo Howes, both of Crawford; and seven great-grandchildren, Claudia Howes,
Sacramento, Calif., Tyler Thomas and Haley Thomas, both of Buckhannon, Cody
Howes and Bailey Howes, Clarksville, Tenn., Joshua Longerbeam, Clarksburg, and
Keelin Howes, Buckhannon.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Earl, Otha, Frank and Henry Howes;
and four sisters, Minnie Wright, Bessie Miller, Pearl McGilton and Juanita
Howes.
Mr. Howes served in the infantry in the U.S. Army during World War II in the
Normandy and Germany campaigns. He was wounded twice in France in 1944 and in
Germany in 1945. He was decorated with the EAME Ribbon, two battle stars, a
good conduct medal and the Purple Heart.
He was a retired coal miner and had served as constable for Upshur County. He
was a member of the VFW and Masonic Lodge in Buckhannon and a member of the
United Mine Workers Union.
He was a member of Wayside Baptist Church.
Funeral Arrangements: Friends will be received at
Tomblyn-Whitescarver Funeral Home Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8
p.m. Graveside services will be at West Virginia National Cemetery in Grafton

Geneva E. Hubacher
Geneva E. "Gerry" Hubacher, 84, of Massillon, Ohio, died
Friday evening, June 28, 2002, at Altercare of Navarre where she had been a
patient since 1999, following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Hubacher was born Jan. 16, 1918, in Elkins, a daughter of the late Henry
Clay and Peachie Mary White Teter.
She was married to Earl H. Hubacher, who preceded her in death in 1981.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Pauline Bennett; two brothers, Percy
and Harry Teter; and one stepbrother, Estin Teter.
She retired in 1978 as a waitress from the Massillon Club after 27 and one half
years of service. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in
Massillon, Ohio, Alma Circle of the church, Eastern Star Hadassah Chapter 108,
and Amicitia Sunday School Class.
Friends will be received at Atkinson-Feuch Shaidnagle Funeral Home in
Massillon, Ohio, Tuesday from noon until 1 p.m., the funeral hour, with the
Rev. Marlene Peterson officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hill
Cemetery in Canton, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to First United
Methodist Church, Memorial Fund, 301 Lincoln Way E, Massillon, Ohio 44646. From

Hilda M. Hubbell
Hilda M. Hubbell, 71, formerly of Montrose and Strasburg, Va., died
Thursday, April 4, 2002, in a local nursing home.
She was born March 2, 1931, in Shenandoah County, Va., a daughter of Guy Walton
McDonald and Vivian Jenkins McDonald.
Surviving are two sons, Gary A. Morris of Stephen City, Va., and Harry A.
Morris of Gillette, Wyo.; three daughters, Mary A. Sexton of Elkins, Kris D.
Morris, Middletown, Va., and Laurie Morris of Philippi; 15 grandchildren and 16
great-grandchildren.
She was a seamstress at various sewing mills.
Memorial services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. as the Seventh Day Adventist Church
in Winchester, Va., with Pastor Lyndon Elliott officiating. Funeral
arrangements are under the direction of Jones Funeral Home in Stephens City,

Sylvia M. Huffman
Sylvia Mae Lambert Huffman, 85, of Franklin, died Saturday, Feb.
16, 2002, at her home.
Mrs. Huffman was born June 15, 1916, in Smith Creek, a daughter of the late
Lafayette Lambert and Sarah Elizabeth Bennett.
On Oct. 7, 1940, she married Earlie Albert Huffman, who survives.
Also surviving are four daughters, Rettie Mae Waggy, Franklin, Sarah Fay
Harper, Bridgewater, Va., Mildred Florence Jennings, Peterstown, and Rose Elva
Adams, Wellsburg; two sons, Albert Wayne Huffman and Ralph Ora Huffman, both of
Franklin; two sisters, Mildred Mitchell and Dessie Hedrick, both of Franklin; a
brother, Byron Lambert, Bridgewater, Va.; 14 grandchildren, 12
great-grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Roy Lee Huffman on March 3, 1979; a
son, Earl Lafayette Huffman on March 3, 1979; two brothers, Jeffrey Lambert and
A. Green Lambert; and a half sister, Mazie Vandevander.
Mrs. Huffman was a homemaker. She attended Franklin Presbyterian Church.

Fleta Hull, 85, of 164 S. Kanawha St., Buckhannon, died Monday,
April 29, 2002, in Buckhannon.
Mrs. Hull was born Jan. 3, 1917, in Upshur County, a daughter of the late
Albert and Stella Glass Tenney.
On Jan. 26, 1942, she married Robert Bonne Hull, who preceded her in death on
Jan. 9, 1993.
Surviving are one daughter, Anna Maureen Hull, Buckhannon; one son, Robert Neil
and wife, Connie Hull, Buckhannon; three sisters, Bethene Hull, Buckhannon,
Margie Reese, Clarksburg, and Letha Hinkle, Barberton, Ohio; a brother, Victor
Tenney and wife, Delorse, Tallmansville; two granddaughters, Brandi Wykoff and
husband, Steve, Buckhannon, and Shannon Darby and husband, Ken, Beallsville,
Ohio; one great-grandson, C.J. Wykoff, Buckhannon; and several nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Lee Hull; and two brothers, Kiser
Tenney and Elles Tenney.
Mrs. Hull assisted her husband in running Hull’s Market.
Friends will be received at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home Thursday from 2 p.m.
to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be in the funeral home
chapel Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Gary Stackpole officiating. Interment

Andrew J. Humphrey
Andrew James "Andy" Humphrey, 53, a resident of Elkins,
and formerly of Belington and Junior, was pronounced deceased upon arrival at
Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins, Saturday, March 16, 2002. He had been in his
usual health and death was unexpected.
He was born Jan. 21, 1949, at Braxton County, a son of the late Roy Junior
Humphrey and the late Margaret Jane Canfield.
He was formerly married to Susan Humphrey, who survives at Belington.
Also surviving are one daughter, Melissa Simmons, Andrews Air Force Base, Md.;
two sons, Darius Andrew and Trevor James Humphrey, both of Belington; one
brother, Roy Dale Humphrey, Belington; two sisters, Sandra Louise Coburn,
Clarksburg, and Linda Sharon Talbott, Junior; and one granddaughter, Amber
Simmons.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one infant brother,
Darius Wayne Humphrey.
Mr. Humphrey attended the schools of Barbour County. He was a veteran of the
Vietnam War from 1968-1972 serving in the U.S. Army and also had served briefly
in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was formerly employed by Asplundh Tree Co. He was
a member of the VFW Post 410 in Belington and was a Methodist by faith.
Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home in Belington Wednesday from 11
a.m. to 1 p.m., the funeral hour, at which time final rites will be conducted
from the funeral home parlor with the Rev. Doyle Neil Rider officiating. The
casket will remain closed. Interment will follow in the Knights of Pythias
Cemetery near Junior, where military rites will be accorded by the American

Darien Scott Hunt, infant son of David Alan and Sharon Kay Mitchell
Hunt of Route 3, Philippi, died at 12:45 a.m. Friday, June 14, 2002, in the
Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
He was born June 10, 2002, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon.
Surviving are one brother, Jeremy D. Hunt, at home; paternal grandparents,
Denver and Wilma Lightner Hunt, Route 1, Moatsville; maternal grandparents,
Richard "Dick" and Lurae "June" Poe Mitchell, Clemtown; and
paternal great-grandmother, Opal Hunt, Carrolltown Road.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Ashley N. Hunt.
Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St.,
Philippi, after 2 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in the
funeral home chapel with the Rev. Roy Cogar and the Rev. Bob Nichols

Odessa Mouse Mace
Odessa B. Mouse Mace, 76, of Wellsburg, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at
Presbyterian University Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa.
She was born on Nov. 7, 1925, in Elkins, the daughter of the late Kent W. and
Pearl Kelley Mouse.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Guy E. Mace Sr. on Dec. 28,
1995; an infant son and daughter; two brothers and one sister.
She worked as a registered nurse for Dr. Howard A. Sporck for 17 years and as a
private-duty nurse after her retirement from Dr. Sporck’s office.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wellsburg.
Odessa was a Red Cross Volunteer. She was a friend and caregiver to everyone
she met.
Surviving are one son, Everett Mace Jr., at home; two daughters, Mrs. Robert
(Candace) McCann of Westborough, Mass., and Vickie Mace, Wellsburg; four
sisters, Elfa Lloyd, Elkins, Effie Cavender, Charleston, Irene Lowery and her
husband, Berk, of Baltimore, Md., and Martha Smith, Elkins; one grandson,
Justin McCann, and his wife, Jessica, Laurel, Md.
Friends were received on Thursday and Friday at the Chambers Funeral Home at
1030 Main St. in Wellsburg where services will be held at 11 a.m. today with
the Rev. Steven Seng officiating. Interment will follow n Franklin Cemetery at

Cora L. Hutchison
Cora Louise Sirk Hutchison, 79, a resident of Brookville, Pa.,
passed away, Friday, April 26, 2002, in Stella Maris Hospice in Baltimore, Md.
She was born Dec. 5, 1922, at Clarksburg, a daughter of the late Vessie and
Virgie Hinkle Sirk.
On Feb. 12, 1947, she was married to Peter Dean Hutchison, who preceded her in
death in 1982.
She is survived by one son, Jerry D. Hutchison, Littleton, Mass.; one daughter,
Judy J. Hutchison, Baltimore, Md.; one brother, Lawrence "Don" Sirk
of Clarksburg; and two grandchildren.
Mrs. Hutchison was a homemaker. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern
Star and served as past worthy matron. She was a member of the Rebekah’s Lodge
and a Methodist by faith.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at Tomblyn Funeral Home in
Elkins. The Randolph Chapter No. 74 Order of the Eastern Star will conduct a
memorial service at 7 p.m. Saturday from the funeral home chapel. On Sunday,
Mrs. Hutchison will be moved to Maplewood Cemetery, where graveside services
will be held at 1 p.m. Dr. Ellis E. Conley will officiate and interment will

Craig S. Hutchison
Craig S. Hutchison, 37, a resident of 1 George Court, Philippi,
passed away Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002.
He was born Feb. 19, 1965, a son of B. Joann McDaniel Hutchison, who survives
at 1 George Court, Philippi, and the late Carl P. Hutchison.
Also surviving are one brother, Cole Hutchison and friend, Cheryl Warner,
Carrollton community, Volga; one aunt, Dorthy Trotter, Allentown, Pa.; two
uncles, Stanley McDaniel, Sardis, Ohio, and Elwood McDaniel, Lumberport; two
nephews, Carl and Clay; and three nieces, Lacy, Shasta and Ashley.
Mr. Hutchison received his B.S. degree from Alderson-Broaddus College and a
master’s degree in safety management from West Virginia University. He was
employed as a teacher. He was a Protestant by faith.
Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Charles "Charlie" Delbert Hymes Sr., 67, of Monteo, N.C.,
died Thursday, March 14, 2002, at Health East Medical Center in Nags Head, N.C.
Mr. Hymes was born in Junior, a son of the late Delbert Frederick and Ethel
Hammner Hymes.
He was a retired carpenter and attended the Pentecostal Church of God in
Hendricks.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice Ketterman Hymes of Monteo, N.C.; one
daughter, Tammy Gayle Vulcano of Rices Landing, Pa.; one son, Charles
"Chuck" D. Hymes Jr. and wife, Debbie of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; one
sister, Beverly Hope Mitchell of Manteo, N.C.; and eight grandchildren, Amanda,
Ashley, Alex, Brent, Joseph, Mathew, Michael and Jesse.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Helen Y. Fitzwater; and one son,
George L. Hymes.
Graveside services will be Saturday at 4 p.m. at Roanoke Island Memorial

Agnes M. Hyre
Agnes McClain Hyre, 90, of 402 Buckhannon Manor, Buckhannon,
died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, in Holbrook’s Nursing Home in Buckhannon.
Mrs. Hyre was born Oct. 10, 1911, in Ashville, N.C., a daughter of the late
Rev. Bob and Hattie Carr Bennett McClain.
On Dec. 8, 1927, she married Herbert P. Hyre Sr., who preceded her in death on
July 7, 1977.
Surviving are two sons, Herbert Hyre Jr., Buckhannon, and Charles E. Hyre,
Bucks County, Pa.; a daughter, Ethel Lee Johnston, Holly Grove; a sister,
Margaret Mackey, Cameron; eight grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 13
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Lt. Jack R. Hyre; two brothers, Troy D.
McClain and Harold McClain; and a half sister, Ruth McClain.
Mrs. Hyre was a cook for 25 years at Central School. She was a member of
American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Buckhannon VFW Ladies Auxiliary and several
church groups. She was a charter member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church.

Beatrice Hyre
Mrs. James (Beatrice) Hyre, 79, of Route 3, Buckhannon, the Abbott
community, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at her home, under the care of St.
Joseph’s Hospice.
She was born Dec. 28, 1922, at Bethlehem, Upshur County, a daughter of the late
James Emmett and Mary Tenney Gillum.
She was united in marriage on Dec. 18, 1939, to James S. Hyre, who preceded her
in death on Oct. 15, 1984.
She is survived by two sons, Richard D. Hyre of Tallmansville, and Darrell W.
Hyre of Adrian; four daughters, Mrs. Marlin (Idella) Loudin of Adrian, Mrs.
Michael (Marjorie) Tierney of Weston, Mrs. William (Lois) Bias of Keyser and
Mrs. Lowell (Levonda Kay) Wayts of Stafford, Va.; 19 grandchildren and 21
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two grandchildren.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded
in death by six brothers and three sisters.
Mrs. Hyre was an active member of the Rocky Ford United Methodist Church. She
was a member of the Willing Workers Extension Homemakers Club and she was a
homemaker. For many years she and her husband operated Hyre’s Garage at Adrian.
She was a quilt maker and won many awards for her outstanding quilts.
Friends will be received today from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Heavner & Cutright
Funeral Chapel. Services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Rocky Ford
United Methodist Church with the Rev. William C. Eskew Jr. and the Rev. Robert
Heavner officiating. Interment will follow in the Rocky Ford Cemetery. From 1

David Hyre
David Hyre, 84, of Columbia, S.C., died Sunday, June 2, 2002.
Mr. Hyre was born in Elkins, a son of the late Albert and Cynthia Weese Hyre
Surviving are one daughter, DiAnna Hyre, Columbia, S.C.; one son, Stephen Earle
Hyre of Greenville, Ind.; two grandsons, Davis Oliver Hyre and Hamilton Joseph
Hyre, both of Charlestowne, Ind.; and one brother, Clifford Hyre of Elkins.
He served his country in the U.S. Army in World War II and Korea, retiring
after 30 years of service. Upon his retirement he worked as a meat inspector
with the Clemson Extension Service.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the graveside in Greenlawn
Memorial Park, with military honors. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8
p.m. today in Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, Columbia, S.C. Memorials
may be made to Pets, Inc., 300 Orchard Drive, West Columbia, S.C. 29170. A tribute

Rev. Isabella H. Hyre
The Rev. Isabella Hope Hyre, 81, of Route 1, French Creek, died
Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at the home of her son, Maxon Hyre, under the care of
St. Joseph’s Hospice.
She was born Jan. 2, 1921, in Upshur County, a daughter of the late John
"Babe" Quincy and Mary Crawford Lee.
She was united in marriage on Jan. 2, 1937, to Archie F. Hyre, who preceded her
in death on June 2, 1985.
Surviving are three sons, Maxon and wife, Irene of Route 1, French Creek,
Maurice and wife, Deloris of Route 1, French Creek, and Paul Hyre of Haymarket,
Va.; seven grandchildren, Brenda Alderman, French Creek, Cheryl Howes, French
Creek, Steven Michael Hyre, Buckhannon, Sandy Fealy, Buckhannon, Randall Hyre,
Buckhannon, Bethany Hyre, Haymarket, Va., and Toni Hyre of Morgantown; 12
great-grandchildren, three brothers, the Rev. Owen Lee of Buckhannon, Berlin
Lee of Salem Ridge, and Robert Lee of Lewis County; two sisters, Martha Young of
French Creek, and Maxine Canter of Buckhannon; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Oval O’Dell Lee, Orlando Lee and
an infant brother; four sisters, Donice Golden, Dolly Hardman, Agnes Marsh and
Madeline Lee.
The Rev. Hyre was pastor of the Lighthouse Church on the Alexander Road,
involved in Foreign Mission Work and a dedicated Christian.
Friends will be received today from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Heavner &
Cutright Funeral Chapel. Services will be Saturday at the Lighthouse Church on
the Alexander Road, where she will lie in state from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m., the
funeral hour, with the Rev. David Brown and the Rev. Don Elmer officiating.

Russie Hyre, 90, a resident of Elkins and a patient in the Elkins
Regional Convalescent Center, passed away Tuesday morning, Sept. 3, 2002, in

Russie J. Hyre
Russie J. Hyre, 90, a resident of Elkins and a patient in the Elkins
Regional Convalescent Center, passed away Tuesday morning, Sept. 3, 2002, in
Davis Memorial Hospital.
She was born Nov. 2, 1911, in Pendleton County, a daughter of the late Mayberry
and Verna C. May Strawder.
On Sept. 1, 1934, she was married to Clifford Hyre, a resident of the Elkins
Regional Convalescent Center.
Also surviving are one daughter, Betty J. Schoonover, Elkins Regional
Convalescent Center; one grandson, Robert J. Schoonover of Elkins; one
sister-in-law, Georgie Strawder, Riverton; and one great-grandson, Shawn
Schoonover of Elkins.
Also preceding her in death were two brothers, Raymond and Mason Strawder.
Mrs. Hyre was employed in housekeeping at the Tygart Hotel, Elkins Motor Lodge
and Davis & Elkins College prior to her retirement. She was a member of the
Elkins Church of the Brethren.

Friends will be received at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home from 6 p.m.
to 9 p.m. today. Final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel on
Friday at 1 p.m. The Rev. Eli Hostetler and the Rev. Robert L. Lowther will
officiate and interment will follow at Mountain State Memorial Gardens in
Gilman. From 13 June 2002.
