Boone M. Salisbury
Boone Mason Salisbury, 82, of Alston Corner, Ore., died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002, at Longview, Wash.
Mr. Salisbury was born May 29, 1920, in Blue Springs, a son of the late Winfield H. and Bertha M. Stalnaker Salisbury.
He was twice married. First, on Feb. 23, 1947, in Astoria, Ore., he married Chloteen Jones Cutlip, who preceded him in death on Aug. 17, 1993. Second, on Nov. 5, 1994, at Rainer, Ore., he married Esther L. Robinson, who survives at the family home in Alston Corner, Ore.
Also surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Gene and Marie Cutlip, Astoria, Ore., and Dave and Shari Salisbury, Svensen, Ore.; four daughters and sons-in-law, Cheri and Bill Rygg, Mesa, Ariz., Lynn and Dennis Boyle, Sunset Beach, Ore., Dee and Don Bartlett, Svensen, Ore., and Rebecca and Douglas Palm, Albany, Ore.; four stepdaughters and three stepsons-in-law, Connie Boyle, Sisters, Ore.; Colleen and Greg Payne, Goble, Ore., Douglas and Connie Robinson, Chehalis, Wash., and David and Judee Robinson, Sisters, Ore.; 37 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and six sisters.
Mr. Salisbury was raised and educated in West Virginia. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1941 and served in the South Pacific and Panama, during World War II until 1945, when he was honorably discharged. During his first years in Oregon, he worked as a faller in the woods and at the lumber mill in Bradwood, Ore. He went to work for Crown Zellerback Pulp/Paper Mill at Wauna and retired there as an oiler in 1984.
He enjoyed working on his farm in Svensen, Bluegrass music, writing poetry and his family. His renewed faith in 1965 sparked an interest in Christian writing. He has had several poems and three books published, as well as numerous articles and a column in the Alder Patch Community Newsletter. In the early 1990s, he made two trips to Africa to deliver medical supplies with the "Teen Trees Inc." He was known for his sense of humor and being a good family man, who loved hosting his annual Bluegrass Hoedowns.
Private family graveside services were held today at 11 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in Astoria, Ore. A public memorial service will be today at 4 p.m. at Alston Corner Assembly of God Church in Alston Corner, Ore. Memorial services will be made to Gideons International, PO Box 2007, Gearhart, Ore. 97138. Caldwell’s Luce-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave., Astoria, Ore., is in charge of the arrangements. Edward Sandusky
Edward Sandusky, 92, a resident of Volga, passed away at 2:19 p.m. Sunday, June 16, 2002, in St. Joseph’s Hospital at Parkersburg.
He was born Oct. 23, 1909, in Barbour County, a son of the late John and Emaline Martinkus Sandusky.
He was united in marriage on March 8, 1941, to the former Wilma Berniece Thompson, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters and one son-in-law, Melody Ann Sandusky and very special friend, Gary Siegrist, Parkersburg, and Cindy Faye and Thomas Sandusky Sinsel, Perkasie, Pa.; two sons and daughters-in-law, James Lawrence and Patricia Eileen Kay Sandusky and Edward Floyd "Skip" and Louise Zirkle Green Sandusky, all of Philippi; eight grandchildren, Kimberly Jane Sandusky Alexander, James Lawrence and wife, Brandi Dawn Morrison Sandusky, Kelli Suzanne Sandusky, Eric Jonathan and wife, Tara Price Sandusky, Marc Sandusky, Joshua Wayne and wife, Jennifer Beers Sinsel, Jason Patrick and wife, Heather Peuplie Sinsel and Matthew Lee Sinsel; one stepgrandson, William David Green; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one infant son, William Edward Sandusky; two brothers, John Sandusky and Clemence Sandusky; two sisters, Emaline Sandusky and Sophia Sandusky Winslow; and one grandson, Matthew James Sandusky.
He retired in 1972 as an electrician for Bethlehem Steel. He was a former member of the Barbour County Sportsman Club and the Volga Ruritan Club, where he held various offices. He was a graduate of the University of Hard Knocks. He was a member of the United Mine Workers, District 31. He was affiliated with the Queen’s Chapel United Methodist Church.
Friends will be received at Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St., Philippi, after 4 p.m. today. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with Robert "Buck" True and the Rev. Linda Payton officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery. Thomas D. Saunders
Thomas Dudley Saunders, 80, a resident of the Barbour County Good Samaritan Center and formerly of 313 Custer St. in Belington, was pronounced deceased upon arrival at 2:28 a.m. Wednesday, June 26, 2002, in the Broaddus Hospital emergency department, following an extended illness.
He was born April 3, 1922, at Healing Springs, Va., a son of the late Leland and Lula Thomas Saunders.
In 1947 at Healing Springs, Va., he was united in marriage to the former Hilda Phillips, who survives at Laurel View Apartments in Belington.
He is survived by one sister-in-law, Doreen Saunders; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three infant sisters and two brothers. He is the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Mr. Saunders attended the schools of Hot Springs, Va. He was a policeman at the Homestead Hotel in Hot Springs, Va. He had worked many years as a self-employed farmer in Volga.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army, having received the Purple Heart.
He was a lifelong member of the VFW Post 410 in Belington and was a lifelong member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a member of the Hot Springs United Methodist Church in Hot Springs, Va.
Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home in Belington from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and Friday until 1 p.m., the funeral hour, when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home parlor with the Rev. Arden Beck officiating. Interment will follow in the West Virginia-Grafton National Cemetery where full military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 44 of Philippi. In lieu of flowers the family ask that expressions of sympathy be made in the form of contributions in memory of Mr. Saunders to your favorite charity or organization. From 27 June 2002.

Reitz J. Sayres
Reitz J. Sayres, 82, a resident of 308 Glendale Ave., Elkins, and a resident of Colonial Place, passed away at 8:55 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at Colonial Place.
He was born Jan. 30, 1920, at Baxter, a son of the late Audrey M. and Helen Elizabeth Stark Sayres.
He was married to Etta Bee Sayres, who preceded him in death on Feb. 5, 2002.
He is survived by one brother, James Ray Sayres of Elkins; one sister, Mary Virginia Shields of Bridgeport; one nephew, James R. Sayres Jr. of Elkins; and one niece, Linda K. Teter of St. Albans.
Mr. Sayres served in the U.S. Navy for six years. He was employed as an electrician for Lockheed Martin Energy Systems prior to his retirement. He was a member of the Wagon Wheelers Square Dance Club, Local No. 689 Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers and the First Baptist Church of Jackson, Ohio.
Friends may call from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday from the funeral home chapel. Dr. Ellis E. Conley and the Rev. Jeffrey R. Satterfield
Jeffrey Robert Satterfield, 20, of Morgantown, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002.
He was born Feb. 11, 1982, in Pittsburgh, Pa., a son of the late William Paul Satterfield and Nancy Shatting Miller of Morgantown.
He was a 2000 graduate of Elkins High School and a sophomore at West Virginia University, majoring in engineering. He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.
In addition to his mother he is survived by his stepfather, Gary W. Miller; one brother, Stephen Paul Satterfield; three sisters, Elizabeth Miller, Emily Miller and Mary Miller, all of Morgantown; and his paternal grandfather, Robert Satterfield of Elizabeth, Pa.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, William and Myrtle Shatting; and his paternal grandmother, Gloria Satterfield.
Friends may call at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Morgantown on Saturday from noon until 1 p.m. followed by a funeral Mass with Fr. Jeremiah McSweeney and Fr. William Anderson as celebrants. Interment will follow at the Round Hill Cemetery in Elizabeth, Pa. Dorothy Schabinger
Dorothy H. "Dottie" Schabinger, 78, of 26 Jay St., Buckhannon, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
Mrs. Schabinger was born March 22, 1924, in Linwood, Md., a daughter of the late Joseph L. and Eva John Haines.
On March 11, 1950, she married J. Robert Schabinger, who survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Miriam Leatherman, Old Fields; one son, J. William "Bill" Schabinger, Berthoud, Colo.; one brother, Lewis Haines, Linwood, Md.; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph Haines.
Mrs. Schabinger was a homemaker. She was a member of Federated Womens Club. She attended First United Methodist Church and was a member of the church circle.
Memorial services will be at First United Methodist Church Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Mark Flynn officiating. Arthur D. Schenk
Arthur D. Schenk, 98, of Route 9, Box 17, Buckhannon, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, at Holbrook’s Nursing Home in Buckhannon.
Mr. Schenk was born July 17, 1904, in Jerusalem, Ohio, a son of the late Fred and Lizzie May Griffith Schenk.
He married Loretta Sneed Schenk, who preceded him in death on July 14, 1994.
Surviving are one daughter, Doris Mae Rehburg, Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; one stepdaughter, Loretta Bodkins, Buckhannon; two stepsons, Eugene Westfall, Grafton, and Russell Duncan, Corapolis, Pa.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Edgar Schenk; one sister, Charlotte S. Johnson; and one grandson, Robert Duncan.
Mr. Schenk was a steel Worker for Pitt-Des Moines, Inc.

Mary E. Schuster, 95, the mother of Father Roy Schuster of St. Patrick Catholic Church of Coalton, passed away Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at 4:20 p.m. in Nella’s Nursing Home where she had been a resident since 1997.
She was a former resident of Castle Shannon near Pittsburgh, Pa., for several years.
Born June 9, 1907, at Cleveland, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Alois Walburga Lenz Wolf.

Mary E. Schuster, 95, mother of Father Roy Schuster of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church of Coalton, passed away Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at 4:20 p.m. in Nella’s Nursing Home, where she had been a resident since 1997. She was a former resident of Castle Shannon near Pittsburgh for several years.
She was born June 9, 1907, at Cleveland, Ohio, a daughter of the late Alois Walburga Lenz Wolf.
She was united in marriage to John Schuster, who preceded her in death in 1994.
Mrs. Schuster had just celebrated her birthday on June 9, 2002.
She is survived by one son, Father Roy Schuster of St. Patrick Catholic Community, Coalton; one sister, Helen Scott of Elyria, Ohio; one brother, Robert "Bob" Wolf of Wakeman, Ohio; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband was one daughter, Mary T. Miller, who preceded her in death in 1972; and several brothers and sisters.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Anne Catholic Church in Castle Shannon and a member of the Christian Mothers.
Friends will be received today at St. Patrick Catholic Community Church at Coalton from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m., at which time the Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Father Roy Schuster, pastor of the church, will be the celebrant. On Thursday, Mrs. Schuster will be moved to the St. Anne Catholic Church in Castle Shannon, near Pittsburgh, where friends may call from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m., at which time the Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Schuster. Interment will follow in the St. Anne Cemetery in Castle Shannon, near Pittsburgh. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorials be made in Mrs. Schuster’s name to Catholic Community Service of Elkins. The F.E. Runner Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Betty Hannah Scott, 70, a resident of Junior, passed away Tuesday morning, July 16, 2002, at her home.
She was born March 14, 1932, at Valley Head, the daughter of the late Lina Hogan Brady and the late William Franklin Hannah. She was married to Gerald Lee Scott, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by one son, Gerald Stephen Scott, Beverly; two daughters, Debbie Frame and husband, Mike, Gassaway, and Melonie Reisinger and husband, George, Sparta, N.J.; two brothers, Robert Hannah and wife, Peg, Kerriville, Texas, and Troy Swecker and wife, Maxine, Reedsville; two sisters, Virginia Kidwell, Charlotte, N.C., and Mildred Arnold and husband, Jim, Lakeland, Fla.; three grandchildren, Missy Evans and husband, Bryan, and Greg Scott, all of Beverly, and LeMae Frame, Gassaway; one great-granddaughter, Korri Evans; and several nieces and nephews.
Also preceding her in death were three sisters, Erma Ashby, Ruth Reger and Meda Phillips; and one brother, Edwin Swecker.
Mrs. Scott attended the Westside United Methodist Church in Belington and was a lifetime member of the Junior PTA. She was a member of the Junior Home Service Club for many years.

Kevin Scott, a resident of Elkins, departed this life at 4:50 p.m. Sunday, June 2, 2002, at Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown. He had been in declining health.

Kevin Mark Scott, 45, a resident of the Georgetown Road, Elkins, departed this life at 4:50 p.m. Sunday, June 2, 2002, at Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown. He had been in declining health for the past two years.
He was born Oct. 21, 1956, at Elkins, a son of the late Harry R. Scott and Lorraine Carder Scott.
He had never married.
Surviving are one brother, Patrick Scott, Elkins; three sisters, Susan S. Barb, Elkins, Mary Beth Scott-Calour, Ashland, Ky., and Lisa Scott, Oakland, Md.; one stepbrother, Jim Stemple, Elkins; one stepsister, Ellen Stemple Shaw, Richmond, Va.; and his special companion, Billie McIntyre, Elkins.
He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Virginia Stemple Scott; one brother, Michael Jeffrey Scott; and one sister, Barrie Joan Scott.
He was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1975. He was a self employed electrician, owning and operating Dare Electric at Point Harbor, N.C. He was an avid Harley Davidson enthusiast, was a charter member of the Brothers of the Wheel Motorcycle Club, Mountain Chapter. He was a member of Saint Brendan Catholic Church and was loved by many friends from coast to coast.

Mary W. Scott
Mary Willa Chambers Dye Scott, 84, of Newton Square, Pa., and formerly of Elkins, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, in White Horse Village in Newton Square, Pa. Death was attributed to congestive heart failure.
Mrs. Scott was born Feb. 20, 1917, in Fairmont.
She was twice married. First, in 1942, she married Donald L. "Jim" Dye, who preceded her in death in 1994. Second, in 1996, she married Dr. J. Clifford Scott, who survives.
Also surviving are a sister, Sylvia Miller, Morgantown; a daughter, Maria L. Dye, Amherst, Mass.; a son, David R. Dye, Philadelphia, Pa.; three grandchildren, four stepdaughters and four stepgrandchildren.
Mrs. Scott attended Davis & Elkins College and graduated from West Virginia University in 1938, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. After graduation, she taught high school English in Elkins. She also taught human relations at Swarthmore High School and later worked as an admissions officer at Swarthmore College.
She volunteered at the Sharon Arts Center and the local library in New Ipswich, N.H.

Maurice G. Scott
Maurice Glenn Scott, 71, a resident of 13456 Shell Beach Road, Thornville, Ohio, passed away at 10 p.m. Thursday, April 25, 2002, in the Mt. Carmel East Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, following an extended illness.
He was born Aug. 1, 1930, at Valley Bend, a son of the late Dorsey and Marjorie Phares Scott.
He is survived by two daughters, Margo Talbert and husband, Craig, Jackson, Mich., and Molly Scott, Largo, Fla.; one brother, Lewis Earl Scott, Valley Bend; two grandsons, Morgan and Connor Talbert; and a nephew, Steve Chikos, who lived with and provided care for Mr. Scott.
Mr. Scott was a school teacher and coach in Ohio and served as vice president of the National School Public Relations Association. He later was employed as executive director of development of the W.A. Foote Memorial Hospital in Jackson, Mich. and the director of development of the South Bay Hospital in Redondo Beach, Calif.
He worked in corporate fund-raising for Gerald Panas and Associates, helping to raise millions of dollars for hospitals and YMCAs. In 1993, he retired to Buckeye Lake, Ohio. He was a Methodist by faith and belonged to numerous service organizations.

Robert D. Scott
Robert Dennis Scott, 78, of Horse Shoe Run, passed away Thursday, June 20, 2002, at his residence.
He was born April 4, 1924, in Beryl, a son of the late Walter and Mary Catherine Donally Scott.
Interment was held today in Grafton National Cemetery. Hinkle Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. From 21 June 2002.

William C. Scott
William Coy Scott, 85, of 9 Gum St., Buckhannon, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon.
Mr. Scott was born May 13, 1916, in Ten Mile, a son of the late William H. and Cora Potts Scott.
On Dec. 28, 1941, he married Virginia Wilfong Scott, who survives.
Also surviving are a sister, Agnes Casto, Parkersburg; and a brother, Vorris Scott, Orlando.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Vonda Poling, Vera Swick and Mabel Teets.
Mr. Scott was a diesel mechanic for Craig Motor. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force.
He attended Chapel Hill United Methodist Church.

Christine M. Sell
Christine M. Sell, 80, formerly of West Park Avenue, Westover, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at Smithley’s Personal Care Home in Mt. Morris, Pa.
She was born Jan. 6, 1922, in Morgantown, a daughter of the late Millard Goff and Margaret McGee Britton.
She was a former director of the Morgantown Senior Center, served on the boards of the Fairmont District United Methodist Women from 1963 to 1967 and 1971 to 1974 and was the former president of the Scott’s Run Settlement House. She was an active member of the Westover United Methodist Church since 1951, formerly serving in the adult choir, as a Sunday school teacher, president of the Westover United Methodist Women from 1965 to 1968, director of the Children’s Choir and Acolyte director.
She is survived by one daughter, Bonnie D. Sell of Buckhannon; one son, Charles C. Sell of Westover; one daughter-in-law, Roselee Sell of Greensboro, Pa.; one sister, Virginia Spangler of Monet, Va.; six grandchildren, Richard A. Sell and Deborah A. Bice, both of Greensboro, Pa., Gregg Sell of Mt. Morris, Tracy L. Sell Chico of Morgantown, Beth A. Jundt of Andover, Minn, and Robert S. Iden Jr. of Nitro; and eight great-grandchildren, Kenny, Kayla, Jon, Chad, Ben, Mylana, Trey and Lauren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Kenneth L. Sell in 1993; her eldest son, Kenneth E. Sell; three brothers, Robert A. Britton, Emil D. Britton and Paul W. Britton; two sisters, Claris L. Helmick and Freda L. DePalma; and one great-grandson, Samuel.

George Senic
George Senic, 87, a resident of Alpena, passed away at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2002, in Davis Memorial Hospital.
He was born Feb. 22, 1915, at Gallitzen, Pa., a son of the late Joseph Czene and Matilda Senic.
On Jan. 29, 1944, at Memphis, Tenn., he was married to his wife of 51 years, the former Helen Louise Knutti, who preceded him in death on June 17, 1996.
Mr. Senic is survived by two sons, Jonathan Senic of Harman, and Dave Senic of Alpena; two sisters, Zike Ward of Caretta, and Julia Inscore of Bluefield, Va. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Ona Allen Senic; three brothers and three sisters.
Mr. Senic was a veteran of the U.S. Army Infantry, 3rd Division and entered World War II on Dec. 12, 1942. He fought against Rommell under the command of General George Patton in North Africa. On April 5, 1943, he was severely wounded in a battle at El Guitar, for which he received a Purple Heart. He also received the European, African and Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and was honorably discharged at the rank of first lieutenant. He served with the Civilian Conservation Corp at Alpena.
He was a farmer, minister and a disabled American veteran. He was active in the local school system and an avid supporter of the Harman School. He was a member of H.W. Daniels Post No. 29 American Legion and was pastor at the Church of God at Alpena for many years.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. At the request of the deceased, there will be no funeral service. On Friday morning, Mr. Senic will be moved to the American Legion's Little Arlington Cemetery, where graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. with Brother Jim Arbogast officiating. Interment will follow.
Full military rites will be accorded by members of H.W. Daniels Post No. 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post No. 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Alberta P. Shaffer
Alberta Pauline Shaffer, 81, of 201 Beacon St., Belington, died at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at her home. She had been in declining health for quite some time.
Mrs. Shaffer was born Sept. 1, 1920, in Mt. Claire, a daughter of the late Henry C. and Ina Louise Myers Williams.
On Dec. 11, 1935, she married Denver C. "Pete" Shaffer, who preceded her in death on Jan. 21, 1975.
Surviving are two sons, James H. Shaffer and Leonard M. Shaffer and wife, Mary, all of Philippi; three daughters, Betty L. Harris and husband, Ted, Belington, Margie Mortensen and husband, Marvin, Gowrie, Iowa, and Linda Underwood and husband, Oakey, Cincinnati, Ohio; 20 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family and was preceded in death by a daughter, Ramona Brown; two brothers, Robert and Arden Williams; and two sisters, Beulah Mick and Irene Keller.
Mrs. Shaffer attended the schools of Rosemont and Flemington. She was a homemaker and a former cook at Pt. Pleasant School and Philip Barbour High School and a former cook in area restaurants. She was a lifelong member of the VFW Laurel Mountain Post 410 Ladies Auxiliary in Belington. She was a member of Tyhannon Sportsman Club and a member of Valley Bend Baptist Church near Belington.

James L. Shaffer
James L. Shaffer, 68, of 13 Lower Drive, Buckhannon, died Saturday, July 27, 2002, at his home in Buckhannon.
Mr. Shaffer was born Aug. 3, 1933, in Left Hand, a son of the late Lemuel F. Shaffer and Pauline Carper Shaffer.
On March 10, 1971, he married Peggy Hyre Shaffer, who survives.
Also surviving are four daughters, Jennifer and husband, Ben Powers and Melissa Shaffer, all of Buckhannon, Paula and husband Jeff Groves, Wadworths, Ohio, and Virginia and husband, Steve Brandis, Mesa, Ariz.; two stepsons, Harry and wife, Jan Craig, Buckhannon, and Jeff Craig, Petersburg; one step daughter, Debra and husband, Chris Wallace, Medfield, Mass.; one brother, John Shaffer, Arizona; two sisters, Jackee Campailla, Mogadora, Ohio, and Sue Taylor, Akron, Ohio; one special aunt, Mary Osborn, Bradenton, Fla.; one special nephew, David Campailla, Ohio; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Pam Jones; and one stepdaughter, Janie Craig.
Mr. Shaffer was a machinist for Moore Business Forms. He was a member of the NRA and former member of Brassmasters Pistol Club. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman.

Wanda M. Shahan
Wanda Marie Shahan, 70, of Kirt community, Route 1, Montrose, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, in United Hospital Center, Clarksburg, following an extended illness.
She was born March 16, 1931, at Belington, a daughter of the late Coleman and Anna Carr Cross.
On June 29, 1950, in Oakland, Md., by the Rev. Denver C. Pickens, she was married to L.E. Shahan, who survives at Route 1, Montrose.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Anna M. Scott and Mrs. Kimberly L. Carpenter and husband, John, all of Montrose; one son, Timothy Lee Shahan and wife, Carrie, Gerard, Ohio; four sisters, Lillie V. Coontz and Mrs. Robert (Williadean) Boyles, both of Akron, Ohio, Mrs. Juanita L. Delauder and Mrs. Paul (Juva) Simmons, Montrose; nine grandchildren, Anita Scott Rosier, Tracey Scott Simmons, Juva Charlene Carpenter, Jonathan Carpenter, Jeremy Carpenter, Jody Carpenter, Jared Carpenter, Sidney Marie Shahan and Mary Etta Shahan; three great-grandchildren, Ariel Scott, Timothy Rosier and Eddy Simmons; and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Leta Harris and Anna Lee Johnson; and three infant sisters; four infant brothers; one grandson, Victor Scott Jr.; and one great-grandson, David Rosier.
Mrs. Shahan was a homemaker and was a member of the Central Chapel United Methodist Church.

Donnie R. Sharp
Donnie Ray Sharp, 51, formerly of Mill Creek, and more recently of Camden, S.C., died at 10:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, in Dorn VA Hospital in Columbia, S.C., where he had been a patient since Dec. 23, 2001.
Mr. Sharp was born Dec. 2, 1950, in Mill Creek, a son of the late Russell and Grace Arbogast Sharp.
He married the former Patricia Vaudrin, who survives in Camden, S.C.
Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Ronald (Stephanie) Porter, Elgin, S.C.; three sons, Joe Clark, Camden, S.C., William Clark, Florence, S.C., and John Clark, Columbia, S.C.; four grandchildren, Ronald Jr., Keith, Kevin and Amy Porter; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Sharp was a disabled veteran and served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He had been employed at Wal-Mart as a welcome host, but due to illness had to take early retirement.
Graveside services were held at Mountain State Memorial Gardens today at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Kevin E. Hostetler of the Word of Life Ministries of Parsons officiating. Interment followed. Full military rites were accorded at the gravesite by Tygart Valley Post 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the H.W. Daniels Post 29, American Legion. F.E. Runner Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

William P. Shaver
William Paul Shaver, 84, a resident of Route 5, Buckhannon, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, May 2, 2002, at 8 a.m. in the emergency room at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon.
Mr. Shaver was born July 3, 1917, at Rosedale, a son of the late Jacob W. and Minnie E. Lowe Shaver.
He was united in marriage on Dec. 24, 1937, to Emily Carol Price Shaver, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Roy (Julia Carol) Bush of Buckhannon, and Mrs. Avon (Jerry Sue) Cox of Vienna; two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Patricia Shaver of Buckhannon, and Joseph and Debbie Shaver of Route 5, Buckhannon; and sister and brother-in-law, Mrs. Denver (Dora) Hicks of Barricksville; one brother and sister-in-law, Jennings and Annette Shaver of South Field, Mich.; 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Melinda Shaver; five brothers and four sisters.
Mr. Shaver was employed by the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement and retired in 1977 as a lieutenant.
He was a veteran of World War II, and served in the South Pacific with the U.S. Navy.
He was a member of the following: Franklin Lodge No. 7 AF&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Parkersburg, Ben Bev at Parkersburg, Nemesis Temple AAONMS of Parkersburg, Upshur County Shrine Club, Past Worthy Patron of Eastern Star Parkersburg and Buckhannon.
He was a member of the Liberty of Christ Church of Buckhannon. He attended West Virginia University and a graduate of the State Police Academy.
Friends will be received at Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St., Philippi, after 7 p.m. today, 7:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Sunday, the service hour. Dorothy E. Shaw
Dorothy E. Shaw, 80, of Bartow, Fla., died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, in Lakeland Regional Medical Center in Lakeland, Fla.
Mrs. Shaw was born Feb. 19, 1921, in Evenwood.
She married Ivan D. Shaw, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are two sons, Stephen D. Shaw, Eagle Lake, Fla., and David Shaw, Bartow, Fla.; two brothers, Arthur W. Moore, Lakeland, Fla., and Dale Moore, Altoona, Fla.; five sisters, Jean Taylor, Akron, Ohio, Kathleen Wilson, Spencer, Arjetta Piggott, Philippi, Judy Sparkman, Altoona, Fla., and Bonnie Gainer, Elkins; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Shaw was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as an inspector for 20 years. She was a member of McLeod Memorial Presbyterian Church in Bartow.

Sylvia Mae Shaw, 90, a resident of the Long Term Care Broaddus Hospital in Philippi, and former resident of 18605 McMullen Hwy., Maryland, passed away Monday evening, April 29, 2002, at the Long Term Care Broaddus Hospital.
She was born Sept. 29, 1911, in Nestorville, a daughter of the late Herbert Crites and Dora Nestor Crites.
She was twice married. First, she married Olen P. Clevenger. Second, she married Dennis L. Shaw, whom she married on April 1, 1939. After 52 years of marriage, he preceded her in death on June 29, 1991.
Surviving are two sons, Willard P. Clevenger and wife, Ruth; one stepson, Wilford Leo Shaw and wife, Caroline, of Philippi; four sisters, Mrs Euey (Neva) Hershman, Freeport, Ohio, Mrs. Lee (Reba) Hershman, Tacy, Mrs. Robert L. Anna B. Shea
Anna Belle Shea, 77, of Mill Creek, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at 3:19 p.m. in the Davis Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient since Jan. 4.
She was born Aug. 22, 1924, in Huttonsville, a daughter of the late Lewis and Effie Corbett Gear.
On Feb. 20, 1943, she married Richard Samuel Shea, who preceded her in death during World War II.
Mrs. Shea is survived by one sister, Mabel Anna Hammonds and husband, Tom, Mill Creek; and several nieces and nephews including JoEllen Denney of Elkins.
She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Eleanor Hammonds and Grace Van Pelt; and one brother, Edgar Gear.
Mrs. Shea was a homemaker and a Methodist by faith.

Lucille E. Sheets
Lucille Ervine Sheets, 88, of Glenville, passed away Saturday, April 6, 2002, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston.
Mrs. Sheets was born July 3, 1913, at Green Bank, a daughter of the late Donald C. and Vesta Calhoun Ervin.
She married Everett Burr Sheets, who preceded her in death on Feb. 12, 1991.
Surviving are one daughter, Anna Belle Gillespie and husband, Gary, of Glenville; one son, Donald B. Sheets and wife, Carolyn Sue, of Glenville; two sisters, Marie Crawford of Baltimore, Md., and Alice Miller of Elkins; three brothers, Guy Ervine, Dewey Ervine and Alfred Ervine, all of Green Bank; two grandchildren, Daniel Gillespie and wife, Angie, of Timberlake, N.C., and Shelly Sheets of Glenville; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Mildred Raines; and two brothers, Jack and Clarence Ervine.
Mrs. Sheets was a resident of Green Bank for 56 years, of Valley Bend for 17 years and has been a resident of Glenville for 15 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Valley bend and was a homemaker.

Richard Sheets
Richard Sheets, 63, of Tampa, Fla., and formerly of Oak Hill, passed away Sunday, March 3, 2002, in Florida.
Mr. Sheets was born Aug. 24, 1938, at Durbin, to Leroy Sheets, who survives, and the late Wilma Beard Sheets.
Mr. Sheets was of the Presbyterian faith and was a retired salesman.

Bradley C. Shifflett
Bradley C. Shifflett, 48, passed away in his sleep on Saturday, May 4, 2002, at his home at 109 Jackson Ave., Elkins.
He was born April 5, 1954, in Elkins, a son of Calvin Hansbrough and Mary Frances Hedrick Shifflett of Elkins.
He was a 1973 graduate from Elkins High School. Having a great love of animals since childhood, he began volunteering at the Randolph County Humane Society in 1976. He was among a group of citizens who worked diligently and was instrumental in bringing about a change in the euthanasia of unwanted animals in Randolph County. In 1978, he was hired by the Randolph County Humane Society as the city dog warden and shelter custodian. He held the position of shelter custodian for 20 years until Jan. 15, 1998. He became disabled with cancer in 1998. He was a past vice president and a board member of the Randolph County Humane Society for 20 years.
He was very loved and will be greatly missed by five sisters, Mrs. DeNeal (Cathy) Phillips, Mrs. Lanny (Kim) Thompson, Mrs. Dave (Sherry) Bonner, Mrs. Don (Pat) Thompson and Mrs. Terry (Sandy) Sipe; one brother, David Shifflett and wife, Cheryl; six nephews, Chris Phillips, Derek Shifflett, Cody Thompson, Adam and Travis Bonner and Brandon Sipe; three nieces, Casey and Christa Shifflett and Tara Sipe; two great-nieces, Morganne and Macey Phillips; one great-nephew, Chase Bennett; and a large extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Joseph and Rosa Hansbrough Shifflett; and his maternal grandparents, Clarence and Susie Thompson Hedrick.

Pauline E. Shipp
Pauline Ellen Shipp, 57, a former resident of Beverly, where she had made her home with her niece, Cecilia Riggleman, and since August 20001, a resident of Elkins Regional Convalescent Center, departed this life at 11:20 p.m. Sunday, May 12, 2002, at Davis Memorial Hospital. She had been in declining health.
She was born Monday, May 29, 1944, at Elkins, a daughter of the late George A. Shipp and Mishie Marie Miller Shipp.
She had never married.
Surviving are three sisters, Betty J. Hornick, Elkins, Sarah J. Corley, Bryans Road, Md., and Barbara E. Humphrey, Buckhannon; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Samuel E. Shipp; and three sisters, Madeline E. Albright, Margaret M. Sharp and Dora Mae Shipp.
She was a Methodist by faith.

Jacob L. Shockey
Jacob Lee Shockey, 70, a resident of Baltimore, Md., and formerly a resident of Long Run, passed away at his home on Monday, June 24, 2002. Death was attributed to cancer.
Mr. Shockey was born on Dec. 24, 1931, a son of the late Harrison G. and Missouri R. Currence Shockey.
He entered the U.S. Army on Aug. 2, 1952, and served our country 12 years. While stationed in Maryland, he met and married Rosemarie Annarelli. They were married on Sept. 6, 1958. She survives in Baltimore, Md.
He is also survived by two sons, David Lee and Christopher Allen Shockey; two daughters, Maria Lynn Shockey and Regina Marie Cole; five grandchildren, Stacy, Michael, Cody and Dakota Shockey and Hannah Cole, all of Baltimore, Md.; three sisters, Martha Thornhill, Kansas City, Mo., Mary Chidester of Mill Creek, and Myrtle Weese of Akron, Ohio; and one brother, Neal Shockey of Mabie.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Howard, Burnard and Richard; and three sisters, Edith Pastine, Virginia Shockey and Maudaline Carver.
Mr. Shockey worked as an owner/operator truck driver and was driving for Alexander Atlas Van Line of Baltimore at the time of his retirement. After retirement, he spent time with his son-in-law, Raymond Cole Jr. in his cabinetry shop and learned to work with his hands. He designed and made teddy bear rockers for his grandchildren. He was a member of the American Legion. At his request, he was cremated and the arrangements were made by Duda Ruck Funeral Home in Dundalk, Md. His ashes will be return to West Virginia at a later date for interment. From 9 July 2002.

Harry Short
Harry Short, 68, a former resident of Toms River, N.J., and a resident of Mill Creek since Sept. 14, 1987, passed away Wednesday morning, Sept. 11, 2002, in Davis Memorial Hospital, where he was admitted on Tuesday. He had been in failing health for the past several months and death was attributed to cancer.
He was born June 3, 1934, in New Jersey, a son of the late Calvin and Bertha Finnamore Short.
He was twice married. His first wife, the former Alberta May Applegate preceded him in death. He then married the former Betty Summerfield Tincher, who also preceded him in death.
He is survived by a close companion of 14 years, Jo Taylor of Mill Creek, with whom he had made his home for the past two and one half months.
He is survived by two daughters, Joann Paugh and husband, John, of Beverly, and Bonnie Sharp and husband, Kenny, of Mill Creek; five sons, Steven Short and Harry Short, both of Virginia, David Short and Adam Short and wife, Melissa, both of North Carolina, and Billie Short, address unknown; four stepchildren, one brother, Rodney Short of Beverly; several grandchildren, several stepgrandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were one brother, one stepdaughter and one stepson.
He was employed in New Jersey for many years, having worked for Howard Johnson and the Holiday Inn as a prep cook. He also worked in the lumber business and at Grant’s Department Store in maintenance. He was a Methodist by faith.
Friends will be received at F.E. Runner Funeral Home Chapel Saturday after 6 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted from the Runner chapel Sunday at 1 p.m. The Rev. Pauline Ball Shoulders, 74, of Morgantown, formerly of Wheeling, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at her residence.
She was born Sept. 28, 1927, in Braxton County, a daughter of the late William and Iva Furby Ball.
She retired from West Liberty State College. She was a Methodist by faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest S. Shoulders; and two sons, Donald and Ronald.
Surviving are one son, Donald Shoulders of Wheeling; two daughters, Virginia Swecker of Morgantown, and Charlotte Kolenc of Follansbee; one brother, the Rev. Rex Ball of Lynchburg, Va.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Bonnie J. Pritt Shrader, 67, a lifelong resident of Huttonsville, passed away Sunday, March 19, 2002, at 11:30 p.m. at her residence. She had been in failing health; however, her condition had been considered critical for the past two months.
She was born March 11, 1934, at Huttonsville. She was the only child of the late Gerald and Gladys Higgins Pritt.
On May 30, 1953, she was united in marriage to Willard J. Shrader, who preceded her in death on June 22, 2001.
Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Jeff (Valinda) Gladwell, Mrs. Tim (Sandy) Salisbury and Mrs. Jeff (Kristie) Weese, all of Huttonsville, Mrs. Steve (Lisa) Fincham of Dailey, and Mrs. Danny (Loranda) Simmons of Elkins; four sons, Steve Shrader and wife, Candy of Elkwater, Greg Shrader and wife, Debbie of Mill Creek, Kevin Shrader and Ricky Shrader of Valley Bend, and wife, Shannon of East Dailey; 22 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was a homemaker and a Methodist by faith. She enjoyed needlepointing, sewing and liked to garden.

Lillian Williams Shorter, 98, of Pax, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, in Davis Memorial Hospital, following a short illness.

She was a retired cook for Pax High School and Pax Elementary School She was a member of the Long Branch United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Fayette County Senior Citizens and for many years was a Fayette County Election worker.

Mabel M. Shreve, 82, of Elyria, Ohio, died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, after a brief illness at her home.
She was born May 24, 1919, in Beverly.
She graduated from Beverly High School in 1936. She has been a resident of Elyria since 1954. She enjoyed being with her family, gardening and bingo.
She is survived by her husband, Hubert H. Alan Clayton Simmons, 62, a resident of 310 Second St., Elkins, departed this life Friday, July 26, 2002, at Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown. He had been in his usual health and death was unexpected and due to complications following surgery.
He was born Oct. 1, 1939, at Elkins, a son of the late Clayton Garcia Simmons and Mary Elizabeth Hill Simmons.
Surviving are one brother, Kenneth Simmons, Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Marlene Regina Horne, Elkins, and Patricia Patrulla, Baltimore, Md.; four nieces and seven nephews.
Mr. Simmons attended the schools of Elkins, and owned and operated a baseball card and hobby shop on Second Street in Elkins. He was a Methodist.

Lester Paul Simmons, 75, of Riverton, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, in Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.
Mr. Simmons was born June 5, 1926, in Riverton, a son of the late Lester Clyde Simmons and Madeline Judy.
On Nov. 18, 1950, he married Susie Alice Hedrick, who survives.

Emily Louise Simons, 93, of Route 4, Elkins, the Midland Community, died at 6 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at her home.
Mrs. Simons was born Sept. 6, 1908, in Mill Creek, a daughter of the late William Oscar and Birdie Propst Simons.
On Dec. 24, 1930, in Beverly, she married the Rev. James Ray Simons, who preceded her in death on Oct. 29, 1968.

Donald Ray Sines, 59, of Buckhannon, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, in H.J. Hines Center, VA Hospital in Aspinwall, Pa.
Mr. Sines was born Oct. 3, 1942, in Goshen, a son of Edrie C. Byrd Sines of Buckhannon, and the late Sherman A. Sines.
Also surviving are one daughter, Kimberly Sines, Rome, Ohio; one son, Jeread Sines and Annette of Seattle, Wash.; one sister, Shirley Jefferson, Florida; and four brothers, Hetzel Sines, Ohio, Nathan Sines, Rock Cave, Archie Sines, Florida, and Perry Sines, Gaines.
Mr. Sines was a truck driver and served in the U.S. Army.

On Sept. 9, 1940, she married Charles Raymond Singleton, who preceded her in death on Dec. 17, 1996.

Junior Harold Sinsel, 72, a resident of Route 1, Philippi, passed away at 8:05 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at his residence.
He was born April 4, 1929, in Barbour County, a son of the late Monzell and Verda B. Kethem Sinsel.
He was united in marriage Aug. 10, 1957, to the former Ethel Mae Elza, who preceded him in death on April 4, 1991.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Denise and husband, Kenneth Gumm, Valley Bend; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and wife, Kelly Sinsel, Route 1, Philippi; three brothers, Adrian Sinsel, Philippi, Thomas Sinsel, Yemasse, S.C., and James Sinsel, Michigan; and three grandchildren, Rebecca Corley, Vanessa Corley and Kevin Gumm.
He was preceded in death by five brothers.
He was a self-employed house painter. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star. He received the president’s letter of commendation of his longevity for services on the front line. He was a life member of Laurel Mountain VFW Post 410. He was a member of the American Legion.

Mary Catherine "Kay" Sites, 77, of Riverton, died Friday, June 28, 2002, in Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Va.
Mrs. Sites was born May 8, 1925, in Georgetown, Washington, D.C., a daughter of the late Maurice Francis Adamson and Hannah Roberta Angle.
She married Bill Lee Sites, who survives.

Mrs. Sites was a retired from Para Professional Special Education. She worked at Seneca Rocks and Circleville elementary schools. She attended the Episcopalian Church.

Moore, Franklin; three sisters, Carrie Wetsch, Elkins, Ann Armentrout, Front Royal, Va., and Jean Wimer, Riverton; four brothers, Arthur Armentrout and Ray Armentrout, both of Seneca Rocks, Guy Armentrout, Cherry Grove, and John Armentrout, Columbus, Ind.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Sherida Skinner, 47, a resident of Isner Creek, Elkins, passed away Monday, March 11, 2002, at 6:50 p.m. at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, where she had been a patient since Nov. 7, 2001. She had been in her usual health until entering the hospital, when her condition became critical.
She was born March 26, 1954, in Asheville, N.C., a daughter of the late James Herbert and Annie Mae Rogers Garrett.
On Jan. 2, 1990, in Asheville, N.C., she was united in marriage to Charles E. Skinner Jr., who survives in Elkins.

She was a technician operator for Quest Communications in Iowa until becoming disabled and returning to Elkins to reside. She attended the Chosen Vessels Ministries.

James F. Sloan
James F. Sloan, 72, a former resident of Beverly, and a resident of Ocala, Fla., passed away Sunday afternoon, April 7, 2002, in Ocala, Fla.
He was born Aug. 19, 1929, at Price Hill, a son of the late Charles and Elsie Light Sloan.
He was married to Mildred Wilmoth Sloan, who survives in Ocala, Fla.
Also surviving are two daughters, Beverly Sloan Fallon and Janet Sloan McGonigal, both of Boston, Mass.; one sister, Cecilia Williams of Foster; and two grandchildren.
Also preceding him in death were three brothers and one sister.
Mr. Sloan was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a businessman, farmer and was involved in thoroughbred horse racing prior to his retirement. He was a member of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion, Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars and BPOE Lodge No. 1135 of Elkins.

Morton Daniel Smallridge, 86, of HC 36, Box 328, Tallmansville, died Monday, March 25, 2002, at his home in Tallmansville.
Mr. Smallridge was born Oct. 6, 1915, in Alton, a son of the late Charles Marshall and Allie Elizabeth Zirkle Smallridge.
On Jan. 20, 1941, he married Avis Tenney Smallridge, who preceded him in death on Nov. 28, 2001.

Edna Smith, 85, of Isner Creek Road, Elkins, died at 4:15 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at her home following an extended illness.
Mrs. Smith was born May 3, 1916, in Elkins, a daughter of the late Robert Lee and Jessie Lou Kelly Kerns.
She married Claude James Smith, who preceded her in death on April 15, 1985.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Henry (Barbara) Simmons, Elkins; three grandchildren, Kelly Simmons, Lisa Runner and Amy Harris; and two great-grandchildren, Rebekah and Joseph Harris.

Gertrude Zirkle Smith, 85, formerly of Cassity and of Mabie since 1999, where she had made her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Eva and Ron Markley, died at 4:59 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, in Davis Memorial Hospital emergency room. She had been in failing health for the past two years.

Mrs. Smith was born Aug. 16, 1918, at Buckhannon, a daughter of the late Asa and Regtha Long Reed.
She married Willard Smith, who preceded her in death on Feb. 16, 2002.

Russell W. Smith
Russell Wilson Smith, 83, of Route 3, Box 303, Buckhannon, died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at his home in Buckhannon.
He was born Jan. 8, 1919, in Upshur County, a son of the late Paris Jesse and Blanch Goodwin Smith.
On Nov. 18, 1945, he married Veva Lorena Hyre Smith, who survives.
Also surviving are one son, David Smith and wife, Charlotte, Buckhannon; one daughter, Judy Patterson and husband, Terry, Buckhannon; three grandsons, Jeffrey Patterson and wife, Debbie, Buckhannon, Todd Smith and wife, Susan, Apex, N.C., and Rodney Smith and wife, Marketa, Raleigh, N.C.; one granddaughter, Vikki Rovello and husband, Rod, Buckhannon; two great-granddaughters, Whitney Patterson and Ciara Rovello, both of Buckhannon; two great-grandsons, Joshua Rovello and Zachary Patterson, both of Buckhannon; several nieces and nephews and many friends.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Henry Smith, Parley Smith, Basil Smith, Evert Smith and Orla Smith; two sisters, Avis Smith and Erma Casto; and one half brother, Earnest Smith.
Mr. Smith was a maintenance supervisor for the Upshur County Board of Education. He served in the U.S. Army from March 28, 1942, until Nov. 3, 1945, in Southern Philippines, Luson, New Guinea, Bismarck and Archipelago. He was attached to the 1st Calvary Division with 8th Engineers. His decorations and citations received were the Asiatic-Pacific Theater ribbon with four Bronze Stars, American Theater Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars and a good conduct medal.
He was a lifetime member of Buckhannon VFW Post 3663. He was a member of Rocky Ford United Methodist Church in Buckhannon.

Mrs. Smith was born May 12, 1936, in Elkins, a daughter of the late Maxwell Myrell Moats and Bessie Collins.
She married Jimmy L. Smith, who survives in Clarkston, Ga.

Wilda Pauline Poling Smith, 65, of Mabie, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at her home, following an extended illness. She had been under the care of Hospice Care Corp.
She was born June 30, 1937, at Mabie, a daughter of Iris Ruby Simmons Zirkle, who survives at Mabie, and the late Russell Zirkle.
On May 4, 1958, she was married to Herbert Marshall Poling, who preceded her in death on June 11, 1992. On June 15, 1994, she was married to Woodrow Walter Smith, who preceded her in death on Aug. 7, 1997.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Karen Sue Phillips, Philippi, Mrs. Deana M. Lopez, Romney, Ms. Sandra L. Poling, at home, and Mrs. Carola "Jean" Godden, Belington; three sons, Paul Edward Poling, Akron, Ohio, Russell Wayne Poling, Romney, and Richard L. Poling, Mabie; four brothers, Dayton Zirkle, Doyle Zirkle, Delbert Zirkle and Doran Zirkle, all of Mabie; one sister, Ruby Ware, Cassity; 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Smith was a certified nursing assistant and was a member of Harrison Community Church near Mabie.

Woodrow C. Smith Sr.
Woodrow C. "Woody" Smith Sr., 85, a resident of Route 1, Mill Creek, passed away Sunday, May 5, 2002, at his residence. He had been in failing health since Sept. 16, 2001.
Mr. Smith was born July 22, 1916, at Glady, a son of the late John Calvin and Flossie Olivia Propst Smith.
On Nov. 6, 1939, he was united in marriage to the former Mabel Nelma Sneed, who preceded him in death on Oct. 26, 1993.
He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Delmas (Erma) Smarr of Statesville, N.C., Mrs. Earl (Wanda) Brisbin of Glenwillard, Pa., Mrs. Jack (Edith) Kerr of Glenfield, Pa., and Mrs. Bobby (Linda) Wamsley of Mill Creek; three sons, Woodrow C. Smith Jr. and wife, Wanda, of Valley Head, David Smith of Mill Creek, and Edgar Smith of Corapolis, Pa.; one brother, Roy Dixon Smith of Tampa, Fla.; two half brothers, Allen Smith of Belington, and John Smith of Circleville; 19 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death besides his parents and wife were two daughters, Esta Nelma Smith and Penny Ann Smith; two sisters, Evelyn Lambert and Mable Strawder; four half sisters, Madeline Taylor, Gloria Warner, Jane Cooper and Fern Smith; one brother, Basil Smith; and one grandchild.
He was a coal miner for 35 years and was last employed by Sweckley Valley Hospital where he was a pipe fitter in Sweckley, Pa. He was a Baptist and attended the Mill Creek Memorial Mission Church. He was a U.S. Marine, having served during World War II and was discharged on Oct. 31, 1945. He was a member of the H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion.

Runner Funeral Home Chapel today after 6 p.m. On Wednesday, he will be moved to Mill Creek Memorial Mission Church for visitation from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. He was born Dec. 7, 1940, in New Brunswick, N.J., a son of Evelyn Sandor Snedeker, who survives at Fort Myers, Fla., and the late Eugene Snedeker.
He married Holly McComb Snedeker, who survives.

Bettie E. Sponaugle, 89, a resident of Cherry Grove, died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002, at the Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Va.
She had been a resident of the Pendleton Nursing Home for several years. She was a homemaker and a member of the North Fork Brethren Church at Dry Run.
She was born July 26, 1913, at Hunting Ground, and was the daughter of the late Pet Warner and Laura Mullenax Warner.
On March 9, 1937, she married Conda R. Sponaugle, who preceded her in death on April 28, 1997.

Dale V. Staley
Dale V. Staley, 75, formerly of Callen Avenue, Morgantown, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, in Madison Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Staley was born July 13, 1926, in Morgantown, a son of the late Arthur D. and Ruth Catlett Staley.
He married Neva Staley, who survives. They had been married for 55 years.
Surviving are two daughters, Rita J. Friend and husband, David B., Morgantown, and Tama P. Southard and husband, Don, Kannapolis, N.C.; a son, Dale V. Staley II and wife, Sarah, Mt. Pleasant, N.C.; a brother, Brinley Staley and wife, Marjorie Staley, Morgantown; a sister, Patty Barthlow, Scott Depot; a sister-in-law, Betty Staley; three grandchildren, Christopher D. Southard, Morgantown, Justin D. Southard, Kannapolis, N.C., and Meghan E. Staley, Mt. Pleasant, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Blaine Staley.
Mr. Staley was a graduate of Morgantown High School. He was employed by University Supply Co. as a salesman and manager in the Morgantown and Kingwood areas for 40 years. He retired in 1983.
He also worked at West Virginia University Physical Plant and Marrara Oil Co. in Kingwood.
He was a veteran and served in the U.S. Army with the 74th Ordinance Depot Co. stationed in the Pacific from 1944-1946. He was a member of the Morgantown VFW Post 548.
He was a cradle roll member of Spruce Street United Methodist Church.

Blanche M. Stalnaker, 76, of Parkersburg, died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at her residence.
She was born in Morgan, Pa., a daughter of the late Lester F. and Stella Riley Butler.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons, James Stalnaker of Concord, Calif., and Terry Stalnaker of Marlinton; two daughters, Loretta Viator of New Iberia, La., and Lorena Corona of Pacheco, Calif.; nine grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, one brother, the Rev. Norman Butler; and three sisters, Evelyn Tenney of Mill Creek, Margaret Hohenstein of Houston, Texas, and Ida Judge of Port Orange, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Nyal Stalnaker.

Leland L. "Shorty" Stalnaker, 81, of Point Pleasant Road, Route 2, Belington, died Sunday evening, July 21, 2002, at his home, following a six- week illness.
He was born Feb. 21, 1921, at Belington, a son of the late Jerome and Dana Gaynor Stalnaker.
On April 18, 1942, he married the former Jean Bennett, who survives at Point Pleasant Road, Belington.
Also surviving are four sons, Leslie Stalnaker and wife, Ann, Jerry Stalnaker and wife, Sonja, all of Elkton, Md., Bob Stalnaker and wife, Novella, Falls Church, Va., and Bill Stalnaker and wife, Cindy, Stow, Ohio; three sisters, Helen Griffith, Augusta, Dora Lea Beckner and Mary Lou Wagner, both of Philippi; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Betty Ann Stalnaker.
Mr. Stalnaker retired in 1983 as assistant supervisor of the Barbour County Division of the West Virginia Department of Highways. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theaters with the 503rd Quartermaster Company. He was a member of Laurel Mountain Post 410, VFW at Belington and was a member and deacon of Faith Way Baptist Church.

Marie Baughman Stalnaker, 94, of 310 Locust Ave., Philippi, died at 11:40 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, in Broaddus Hospital.
Mrs. Stalnaker was born May 22, 1907, in Barbour County, a daughter of the late Marcine and Rebecca Poling Elliott.
She was twice married. First, she married Gerald E. Baughman, who preceded her in death. Second, she married James F. Stalnaker, who preceded her in death.
Surviving is a brother, Paul V. Elliott, Akron, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Maysell Jones and Maxine Stalnaker; and a brother, David Elliott.
Mrs. Stalnaker worked for the government in Dayton, Ohio, for several years. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 41 of Philippi and a member of Crim Memorial United Methodist Church.

Stella May Stalnaker, 85, a former resident of Valley Bend, and more recently a patient in Swisher’s Home Care at Beverly, passed away Saturday morning, April 13, 2002, in Davis Memorial Hospital.
She was born Nov. 8, 1916, in Monterville, a daughter of the late Lott and Laura Conrad Salisbury.
She was married to Harley Franklin Stalnaker, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by one stepdaughter, Darlene Russell, Boynton Beach, Fla.; one stepgranddaughter, Sue Ellen Brown, Boynton Beach, Fla.; one stepgreat-grandson, Randy Brown; one stepgreat-great-granddaughter, Kristen; five nieces, Bernice Brown and Waynalea Salisbury, Valley Bend, Dora Winkler, Covington, Ky., Kathleen Reed, Parkersburg, and Portia Fortney of Buckhannon; and one nephew, Bryan Hamrick of Little Hocking, Ohio.
Also preceded her in death were one stepgreat-grandson, Ricky Brown; three brothers, Wayne Salisbury, Garland Salisbury and an infant; and one sister, Maude Hamrick.

William Standridge Jr.
William David Standridge Jr., 33, a resident of East Dailey, passed away Monday afternoon, April 15, 2002, at his home, following an extended illness.
He was born April 9, 1969, in Elkins, a son of William David McCoy Standridge and Pamela Elaine Elza Standridge, who survive in Beverly.
On Feb. 14, 1993, he was married to the former Jody Lynn Rose, who survives at East Dailey.
Also surviving are two daughters, Tara and Amanda Standridge of Elkins; three sons, Dustin Standridge of Elkins, and Brandon and Billy Standridge, both at home; two brothers, Samuel Wayne Ross of Beverly, and Paul Andrew Standridge of Ripley; two sisters, Pamela Lynn Wood of West Union, and Cassie Lynn Standridge of Beverly; and several nieces and nephews.
He was a former employee of Southern States of Elkins and was employed by Elkins Distributing at the time of his illness. He was a member of the 201st Field Artillery Unit of the West Virginia National Guard for eight years and was associated with the Jerusalem United Methodist Church at Philippi.

Joshua Carl Starnes, 16, of Dry Fork, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2002, as a result of an automobile accident.
He was born April 15, 1986, in Elkins, a son of Carl Edward Starnes of McHenry, Md., and Tresa Ann Bennett of Dry Fork.
He is survived by his grandparents, Mary White Starnes of Spartanburg, S.C., David Bennett of Glenmore, and Rheba Bennett of North Ridgeville, Ohio; one half brother, Steven Michael Vance, at home; and one half sister, Randa Lei Vance, at home.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Carl N. Starnes.
He attended Tucker County High School, where he participated in the weight lifting and conditioning class in preparation for the fall football season. He was an avid marksman. He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing and riding his four-wheeler. He was employed as a lifeguard at the Canaan Valley pool.

Anna Marjorie Hite Starr, 75, of Valley Head, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at the home of her daughter, Brenda Starr, who resides near Huttsonville.

On March 3, 1951, in Mill Creek, she married Cam Floyd Starr, who survives in Valley Head.

Lora B. Steele, 91, of Route 2, Buckhannon, Bailey Ridge community, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at her home.
Mrs. Steele was born July 31, 1911, at Upshur County, a daughter of the late Lloyd A. and Josie N. Shreve Bailey.
She married George Robert Steele, who preceded her in death in December 1971.

She enjoyed singing in the choir at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church in Buckhannon and was a member of the United Methodist Women, Friendship Sunday School Class, the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 18 of Buckhannon, Buckhannon Women's Club, Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, West Virginia Wesleyan's Emeritus Club and the College Club. She attended Chapel Hill United Methodist Church.

Frank D. Stotts, 51, a resident of Valley Head, passed away at 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at his home.
He was born Feb. 21, 1951, in Charleston, the son of the late Frank D. Stotts Sr. and Janice Reed Stotts, who survives in Valley Head.

She was born July 2, 1906, at Ten Mile, a daughter of the late Abraham and Rosalee Tenney Kelley. She was twice married, first to Charles Huston Hoover, who preceded her in death, and then to John Quincy Strader, who also preceded her in death.
She is survived by one daughter, Causbie Tenney and husband, Emery, of Buckhannon; one son, Mason Hoover and wife, Annabell, Tallmansville; one sister, Lillie Rowan, Brushy Fork; and two daughters-in-law, Della Hoover, Tallmansville, and Winnie Jean Hoover, Excelsior; 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

William King Straw, 86, a resident of Elkins, passed away Sunday, July 14, 2002, at his residence, following an extended illness.
He was born Dec. 22, 1915, at Weston, a son of the late Elmer D. and Dora McWhorter Straw.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Gardner Straw; two daughters, Kathryn Straw Vaughan and husband, John H. Vaughan and Arlena Straw; one sister, Mary Stalnaker of Jackson, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Mr. Straw was a veteran of World War II and served on special assignment at the Naval Base in San Diego, Calif. He was retired from the Memorial General Hospital where he worked as a purchasing agent. He was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows, where he was a past Grand Noble and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Elkins.

Joseph Richard Steffl, 30, a resident of the Faulkner Road, near Bowden, departed this life Sunday afternoon, April 28, 2002, as a result of a kayaking accident near Bemis.
He was born Oct. 20, 1971, at Wooster, Ohio, a son of Richard Steffl and Shirley Flick Steffl, who survive at Point Pleasant, Ohio.
On Dec. 20, 1999, at Elkins, he was married to the former Robin Dadisman, who survives at Elkins.
Also surviving are two sisters, Julie Steffl, Chapel Hill, N.C., and Melissa Walther, Stefene, Bermuda; his paternal grandmother, Wilma Steffl, Point Pleasant, Ohio; two stepsons, Cody and Sam Wagner, Moatsville; and his mother-in-law, Saundra Dadisman, Philippi.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Walter Steffl; his maternal grandparents, Victor Bunyon and Martha Flick Bunyon; and his father-in-law, Kenneth Dadisman.
He was an outstanding football and baseball player during his middle school years. He was a graduate of Bellaire Saint John High School at Bellaire, Ohio, with the class of 1990. He attended West Liberty State College and was a graduate of Alderson-Broaddus College with the class of 1998, receiving his bachelor of science degree in medical science. He was employed as a physician’s assistant for Mason Todd Corder, D.O., from May of 1998 until April of 2000. He was a former employee of Broaddus Hospital in Philippi. He served as physician’s assistant and acting administrator of the Northern Pocahontas County Health Clinic at Durbin at the time of his death. He also worked at the Tri-County Health Center at Rock Cave. He was an emergency technician, being affiliated with the Bartow-Franklin-Durbin Rescue Squad at Durbin and was a member of Pocahontas County Search and Rescue Team.
He was a member of the American Academy of Physician’s Assistants, the National Academy of Physician’s Assistants and the West Virginia Primary Care Association. He was an avid outdoorsman and was adored by his child patients. He was a Catholic.

Edith Louise Iman Steruat, 88, of Arbutus, Md., and formerly of Petersburg, died Saturday, June 8, 2002.

Bernice R. Streets
Bernice Rettah Streets, 96, of the Good Samaritan Center in Belington since 1990, died at 2:15 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, in the center. She had been in declining health for the past several years.
Mrs. Streets was born Jan. 21, 1906, in Barbour County, a daughter of the late James D. "Met" and Lillie Mae McCauley Poling.
On Oct. 1, 1922, in the former EUB Church in Belington, she married H.D. Streets, who preceded her in death on Jan. 19, 1962.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. William (Jean) Carr, Wellsville, Ohio, Mrs. Harold (Mildred) Talbott, Belington, Mrs. Don (Betty) Nugent, Cottontown, Tenn., and Mrs. Louis (Thelma) Nims, Maple Grove, Minn.; 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 25 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Waddell; three brothers, Denzil H. Poling, Ronald J. "Jack" Poling and Edward G. Pete" Poling; a sister, Beatrice Farley; an infant brother, Forest; two stepdaughters, Genevieve Knight and Goldie Ellis; two stepsons, Harry and Delbert Streets; and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Streets attended the schools of Barbour County. She was a member of Barbour Church of Christ and the Talbott Farm Women’s Club. She was a homemaker.
Friends were received at Talbott Funeral Home in Belington Sunday and today until noon at which time she was moved to Talbott United Methodist Church, where friends were received from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m., the funeral hour, with the Rev. Arden Beck officiating. Interment followed in Talbott Cemetery.

Freda F. Sturdivant
Freda Frances Fitzwater Sturdivant, 70, a lifelong resident of Norton, departed this life at 8:40 p.m. Saturday, May 4, 2002, at her home. She had been in declining health for the past year.
She was born Friday, Feb. 5, 1932, at Norton, a daughter of the late Mason M. "Jock" Fitzwater and Ethel Naoma Weese.
Surviving are one son, Bradley N. Sturdivant and wife, Donna M., Madison, Va.; two daughters, Janet L. Strawder, Westlake, Ohio, and Constance L. "Connie" Meredith and husband, Charles H., Glen Allen, Va.; three brothers, the Rev. Donald L. Fitzwater, Beverly, Gary N. Fitzwater, Elkins, and Kenneth Fitzwater, Indianapolis, Ind.; one sister, Geneva A. Stevenson, Norton; one granddaughter, Cayla M. Sturdivant; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Fitzwater; and one sister, Jean Yoder.
She attended the Norton Grade School and Coalton High School. She was a seamstress working for Reidbord Brothers, and formerly attended the Norton Community Church.

Gorman Cecil Summerfield, 80, a resident of Parsons, departed this life Wednesday afternoon, April 3, 2002, at her home. He had been in declining health and death was attributed to a stroke.

Gorman Summerfield
Gorman Cecil Summerfield, 80, a resident of Parsons and a former resident of Pifer Mountain, St. George, departed this life Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at his home. He had been in declining health and death was attributed to a stroke.
He was born May 24, 1921, at Leadmine, a son of the late Benjamin Franklin Summerfield and Jamima Likens Summerfield.
On May 13, 1946, at Oakland, Md., he was married to the former Sylvia A. Godwin, who survives. They had celebrated 55 years of marriage.
Also surviving are two sons, Robert Cecil Summerfield and wife, Clara, and James Richard Summerfield and wife, Sandy, all of Parsons; two daughters, Wanda Jean Summerfield, Parsons, and Linda Jane Crosten, Elkins; one sister, Edna Bohon, a resident of Cortland Acres at Thomas; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Kenneth Lee Summerfield and William F. "Bill" Summerfield; one brother, Raymond Summerfield; two sisters, Hulda Whitehair and Golda Summerfield; and one half sister, Gertrude Biller.
He attended the one-room school at Leadmine. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corp. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the American Theater and Asiatic-Pacific Theater, receiving the victory medal. He was a farmer and woodsman. He was a buffer for the Sterling-Faucet Co. at Morgantown. He had worked for the former Dorman Mills as a mechanic and retired in 1983 as a mechanic for the Tucker County Board of Education at the school bus garage with 15 years of service. He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter.
He attended the Pentecostal Church at Rosendorf.

Roma Summerfield
Roma D. Summerfield, 54, a resident of 120 Sunset Drive, Elkins, passed away Wednesday morning, July 10, 2002, at her home following an extended illness.
She was born Dec. 9, 1947, at Harrisville, a daughter of Juanita E. Cunningham, who survives at Harrisville, and the late Kenneth O. Cunningham.
She was twice married. First, to Bradley Sanders, a son of B. Sherwood and Lois Sanders of Elkins. He preceded her in death in 1995. On March 8, 1997, she was married to Roger K. Summerfield, who survives in Elkins.
Also surviving are two daughters, Tara R. Thorpe and Kristen B. Sanders, both of Elkins; one stepson, Doug Summerfield of Beverly; one stepdaughter, Amy Roberts of Morgantown; two brothers, Kenneth Cunningham and Larry Cunningham, both of Harrisville; and two sisters, Florence Poe of Raleigh, N.C., and Estella McDonald of Harrisville.
She was employed as a loan officer for Citizens National Bank at the time of her death. She attended St. Brendan Catholic Church in Elkins.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Father William Anderson presiding. Interment will follow in St. Brendan Cemetery. Kathleen P. Murphy / Sondra Sutton-Jones
A joint memorial service will be held for Kathleen "Kay" Phares Murphy and daughter, Sondra "Soni" Sutton-Jones at the First Baptist Church, Randolph Avenue, Elkins, on June 23 at 2 p.m. with Dr. Marvin Parli officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain State Memorial Gardens. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the First Baptist Church. From 15 June 2002.

Audrey O. Swecker
Audrey Opal McGraw Swecker, 90, a patient in Broaddus Long Term Care Facility in Philippi, went to be with the Lord Saturday evening, April 6, 2002.
She was born Feb. 22, 1912, at Crest Mont, Clay County, the youngest daughter of the late Lawrence and Ella Jane Hall McGraw.
She was twice married. First, she married Ray Ogden, who preceded her in death. In 1932, she married Oscar Jonas Swecker, who preceded her in death on June 29, 1986.
She is survived by one son, Edwell Swecker and wife, Roxie, of Cleveland; one daughter, Mrs. Arizona Swecker Pingley and husband, Roxie, of Valley Bend; two grandsons, Roger Pingley and wife, Ann, of Valley Bend, and Jeff Swecker and wife, Karen, of Cleveland; one granddaughter, Debra McNemar and husband, Ron, of Buckhannon; seven great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Loleta Ogden; one grandson, one brother and six sisters.
Mrs. Swecker attended the schools of Randolph County. She was a homemaker and had worked at two local funeral homes for several years. She also specialized in patient care at both the Davis Memorial Hospital and the Memorial General Hospital prior to her retirement.
She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Delmer D. Swecker
Delmer D. Swecker, 99, died Monday, May 27, 2002, in Daytona Beach, Fla.
He was formerly of Lawrence Park and resided with his wife, Helen Mae Rogers Swecker, at 814 Colonial Circle, Daytona Beach, Fla.
He was born in Huttonsville, on Aug. 6, 1902, a son of the late Joseph and Caroline Gear Swecker.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one sister, Iona VanGilder of Clarksburg; one stepdaughter, Nancy Bowser of Daytona Beach, Fla.; one grandson, David Rogers of Erie, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a wife, Melva Koons; two daughters, Eileen and Marian Swecker; two sisters, Annie Rosencrance and Lucy McGee; and five brothers, Joseph, Woodrow, Auten, Brad and and Orion Swecker.
He moved to Lawrence Park in 1923 and was the oldest living member of the Lawrence Park United Methodist Church. He retired from the Erie General Electric after about 40 years service as a welder and was a member of the GE Quarter Century Club and the GE Fishing Club. He was an Air Raid Warden during World War II. He built the lockers where the boats were stored at the GE Fishing Club. He was a member of the Tyrian-Commonwealth Lodge 362 F. and A.M. and was a longtime member of the Lawrence Park Fire Department. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and bowler.
Friends may call at the G.R. Bailey Funeral Home, 4396 Iroquois Ave., today from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. where funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Randy Roda of the Lawrence Park United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery. A Masonic service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. today. From 31 May 2002.

Neddie E. Swecker
Neddie Earl Swecker, 88, a former resident of Monterville and Beverly, and a patient in Elkins Regional Convalescent Center, passed away Tuesday evening, May 7, 2002, in Davis Memorial Hospital.
He was born June 1, 1913, at Monterville, a son of the late George Bryan and Vanessa Heavener Swecker.
On June 30, 1937, at Marlinton, he was married to Doris Virginia Shaffer Swecker, who preceded him in death on Feb. 15, 1995.
He is survived by one son, Robert Earl Swecker and wife, Isabell Nethken Swecker, of Beverly; one sister, Willa Swecker Delay of Oxnard, Calif.; three grandchildren, Sabrina Faith, Christina Hope and Matthew David Swecker; and several nieces and nephews.
Also preceding him in death were one brother, Lawrence C. Swecker; and one daughter-in-law, Goldie Dodrill Swecker.
Mr. Swecker was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Company B 798th Military Police Battalion and received the World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the American Theater Ribbon. He was a self-employed farmer, a former member of the USDA and the Farming for Better Living and various other organizations. He attended the Elkins Church of the Nazarene.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from the funeral home chapel with Pastor Terry Burgess and Pastor Jerry Bush officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. State Memorial Gardens near Gilman, where full military rites will be accorded at the gravesite by members of H.W. Neva M. Swecker
Neva M. Swecker, 88, a resident of Route 1, Beverly, and a patient in Nella’s Nursing Home for the past 18 months, passed away at 6:27 a.m. Thursday, July 18, 2002, in the Davis Memorial Hospital emergency department.
She was born Jan. 15, 1914, at Mill Creek, the daughter of the late Frank and Lucy Pudder Louk.
She was married to Woodrow Swecker Sr., who preceded her in death.
She is survived by two sons, Woody Swecker and wife, Patty, Dailey, and John Swecker and wife, Pam, East Dailey; one daughter, Lorna Semmler, Elkins; two brothers, Kenneth Louk, Virginia Beach, Va., and Blair Louk, Valley Bend; six sisters, Roxie Lodge, Las Vegas, Nev., Alice Howell and Laura Nelson, both of Elkins, Ina Gear, Beverly, Vada Johnson, Mill Creek, and Shirley Riegel, Baltimore, Md.; six grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Also preceding her in death were one brother, Junior Louk; and one grandchild.
Ms. Swecker worked as a cook for Homestead School for many years prior to her retirement.
She attended the Valley Bend Church of Christ.

Emmett V. Swick
Emmett Virgil Swick, 91, of Petersburg, died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at the Hampshire Health Care Center in Romney, where he had resided the past month.
He was born Jan. 19, 1911, in Petersburg. He was the son of the late Asa Washington Swick and Roxie Susie Boor Swick.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret T. Swick Swick on Oct. 17, 1999. He was also preceded in death by one son, Curtis E. Swick; one grandson, Mark E. Whetzel; and four brothers, infant Preston Swick, Eldridge Swick, Evers Swick and Alvie Swick. He was the last member of his immediate family.
Emmett worked for Ebert’s 5 & 10 Store in Petersburg for 36 years and Monarch Mills Discount for several years.
Surviving are one son, Thomas V. Swick of Arthur; two daughters, Arlena "Winkie" Sites and husband, Donald, of Maysville, and Wanda L. Whetzel and husband, Toby, of Arthur; seven grandchildren, Steven M. Sites of Harrisonburg, Va., Beth Hall of Petersburg, Debbie Waide of Johnson, Kan., Sandy Brown of Amarillo, Texas, Linda Leek of Ulysses, Kan., Billy Swick of Las Vegas, N.M., and Richard Swick of Garden City, Kan.; 13 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
