Herbert Jack
Herbert Jack, 99, a resident of Buckhannon, passed away Friday, May 12,
2006, at St. Joseph’s Hospital NCF.
He was born Sept. 21, 1906, in Upshur County, a son of the late Tom Jack and
Serena Jane Jack.
Mr. Jack is survived by his wife, Betty M. Jack of Buckhannon; four sons,
Michael Jack and wife, Dawn Marie, of Crestwood, Ky., Herbert David Jack and
wife, Mariann, of Buckhannon, Dean O. Jack and wife, Vi, of Beverly, Dwain
Phillip Jack and wife, Pat, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a daughter, Carolyn L.
(Jack) Phillips and husband, Steven, of French Creek; eight grandsons, Thayer
Jack of Cincinatti, Ohio, Matthew Jack of Parkersburg, Jeffrey Winemiller, Scott
Winemiller and Josh Winemiller, all of Buckhannon, Justin Jack of Morgantown,
Windel Jack of Huttonsville and Clark A. “Buzzy” Jack of Beverly; five
granddaughters, Charlotte Wendorf of Homer Mich., Doris Sharp of Marlinton,
Sherley Jack of Triangle, Va., Jeri Baker and Marjorie Keller both of Colorado
Springs, Colo.; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Serena Jane Jack; one
granddaughter, Katherine Jack; and one grandson, Dennis Gregory Jack.
Mr. Jack was a lumberman and sawmill owner/operator and a real estate developer.
He was a member of the Tennerton United Methodist Church in Buckhannon and the
Buckhannon Country Club.
Friends were received from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, May 14, at the Poling-St.
Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services were held today at 11 a.m. at the funeral
home with the Revs. Billee Scott Mick and Conrad Tenney officiating. Interment
followed at the Buckhannon Memorial Park in Buckhannon. From 15 May 2006.
Mary R. Jack
Mary Rose Jack, 91, a resident of Buckhannon, died at 1 p.m. Saturday,
May 20, 2006, at her home.
She was born April 5, 1915, at Buckhannon, a daughter of the late Nira Earnest
Jack and Hattie Jane Hawkins Jack.
Surviving are one sister, Mildred Jane White and husband, Paul, of Buckhannon;
one niece, Mary Jane Jack and husband, Bob, of Buckhannon; two nephews, David
White and wife, Janice, of Bellingham, Wash., and Paul Robert White and wife,
Rose, of Kittanning, Pa.; her special love, Samuel L. Baxa, of Buckhannon; four
great-nieces, Nicole Coe and husband, Tim, of Buckhannon, Jennifer White and
Danielle White, both of Kittanning, Pa., and Amanda Purdie of Norman, Okla.; and
three great-nephews, Brian Jack and fiance, Stephanie Miller, and Jason Jack,
all of Buckhannon, and Paul Andrew White of Kittanning, Pa.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one infant brother.
She was the manager of Baxa Hotel Motel.
Friends will be received from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, May 26, at Poling-St.
Clair Funeral Home. On Saturday, May 27, she will lie in state at Sand Run
Baptist Church from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., the funeral hour with the Rev. Donald
Butcher officiating. Interment will follow in Sand Run Baptist Church Cemetery
at Excelsior. Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Charles W. Jackson
Charles William Jackson, 63, a resident of Glenwood Drive,
Douglassville, Pa., departed this life Thursday, March 30, 2006, at his home. He
had been in declining health.
He was born at Frank, a son of the late Edward Jackson and Rhoda Carter Jackson.
Surviving are two daughters, Rhoda K. Jackson and Rachel K. Jackson, both of
Douglassville, Pa.; three sons, Steven A. Lawson of Philadelphia, Pa., Peter L.
Edwards and Lionel V. Edwards, both of Sanatoga, Pa.; two brothers, George
Hunter “Bo” Jackson of Elkins and Robert H. Jackson of Philadelphia, Pa.;
four sisters, Linda C. Jackson of Columbus, Ohio, Juanita Womack of Plainfield,
N.J., Gladys L. Walker of New London, Conn. and Nancy M. Marsh of Columbus,
Ohio; 10 grandchildren; his goddaughter, Keren Spencer of Pottstown, Pa.; and a
host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding him in death besides his parents were five brothers, Walter L., Dewey
Asbury, Edward T., Joseph Ray and Carter D. Jackson; and three sisters,
Genevieve Ann McDonald, Agnes E. Toles and Emily Mae Jackson.
Charles was a graduate of Green Bank High School at Green Bank and served with
the U.S. Army as a specialist E4. He worked for Trailmobile at West Point, Pa.,
and the Budd Co. He also worked at the Bethelham Baptist Church, Penllyn Worship
Center and was also a member of the church. He was also a member of the American
Legion Post 769. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, bowling, enjoying the
49ers and hanging out with his friends at the BQ Pit at Ambler, Pa. He loved his
children and family very much and will be deeply missed.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Bethelham Baptist Church,
Penllyn Worship Center in Penllyn, Pa. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m.
Thursday, April 6, in Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins. The Rev. Terry Cannon will
officiate and interment will follow. H. W. Daniel’s Post 29, American Legion

Naomi P. Jackson
Naomi Pauline Jackson, 75, a resident of Mill Creek, passed away at 3:30
a.m. Monday, Aug. 7, 2006, in Davis Memorial Hospital. She had been in failing
health.
Born on April 29, 1931, at Marlinton, she was the daughter of the late Lawerence
and Pearl Jane Jackson.
She had never married.
Naomi is survived by one daughter, Betty Lou Vanpelt of Mill Creek; two sons,
Edward Lee Jackson of Elkins and Roger Lee Jackson of Mill Creek; three sisters,
Shirley Sharp of Elkins, Slivia Hammond of Augusta and Nella Hutton of Ohio; and
one brother, Quellen Jackson of Elkins. In addition she is also survived by two
grandsons, Ronald Vanpelt and David Vanpelt; four great-grandchildren; and
several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, preceding her in death were two sisters, Goldie
Lantz and Montella Adams; and one grandson, William Jackson.
Naomi was a homemaker and a member of Light of the Valley Church. She enjoyed
spending time with her family, who will miss her dearly.
Friends will be received at F.E. Runner Funeral Home Chapel Friday after 6 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Runner Chapel Saturday, Aug. 12, at
1 p.m. Interment will follow in the Brick Church Cemetery at Huttonsville.

Louise Jackson
Louise Loveall Jackson, 99, of Pennsboro and Morgantown, went to her
heavenly home Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006, at Morgantown.
She was born Sept. 27, 1906, in Tyler County, the daughter of the late George W.
and Katherine O’Donnell Loveall. She was the last surviving member of her
immediate family.
Mrs. Jackson was a 1925 graduate of Pennsboro High School. She attended Salem
College and taught in Ritchie County schools. She was a partner in the family
business, J.L. Jackson’s grocery store and gas station, and the El Rancho
Motel in Pennsboro.
On Nov. 12, 1932, she married John L. Jackson, who preceded her in death.
Louise Jackson is survived by a daughter, Betty Lou Jackson Ralston of
Morgantown, a former West Virginia University extension agent in Randolph
County; three sons and spouses, Neil Jackson of Pennsboro, Lowell and Wilda
Jackson of Mineral Wells and Duane and Karen Jackson of Boaz; as well as several
grandchildren, great-grandchildren, stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 1 p.m. today at the McCullough-Rogers Funeral Home in
Pennsboro. Interment followed in the Masonic Cemetery at Ellenboro. Friends were
received Tuesday and today at the funeral home. Memorials in the name of Louise

Sheila R. Jackson
Sheila Roxanne Jackson, 52, a resident of Norton, passed away Wednesday
evening, May 3, 2006, in Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown.
She was born Dec. 1, 1953, at Clarksburg, a daughter of the late Leroy and Wilma
Lee Copenhaver Kidd.
On Feb. 19, 2000, she was married to David Jackson, who survives at Norton.
Also surviving are a brother, Steven Kidd of Alabama; two stepsons, David Wayne
Jackson Jr. and Troy Eugene Daugherty, both of York, Pa.; a stepdaughter, Melisa
Jo Jackson of Elkins; and special friends, Linda and David Harbert of Lumberport.
Sheila attended the schools of Harrison County and was a member of the American
Legion Auxiliary of Clarksburg. She was employed as a loan officer at Davis
Trust Co. Bank in Elkins and attended the New Life Fellowship Church at
Glenmore.

William Jakubuk
William Jakubuk, 78, a resident of Job, passed away Monday morning, Jan.
2, 2006, in the Davis Memorial Hospital. He was born Jan. 13, 1927, at
Baltimore, Md., a son of the late Peter Kakubuk and Ksiena Ximi Shepshelv
Jakubuk.
In 1955 at Harman, he was married to the former Martha Sue Cunningham, who
preceded him in death Nov. 23, 1999. Surviving are two daughters, Patricia
Mullennex and husband, Jack Mullennex Jr., of Harman and Pamela McDonald of
Elkins; and four grandchildren, W.D. Mullennex of Job, Justin Mullennex and
wife, Melanie, of Harman, Shanna and Jason Hebb, both of Elkins. Three
great-grandchildren also survive.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Pete Jakubuk and John Sychuck.
Mr. Jakubuk was a retired tow truck operator. He was a member of the Russian
Orthodox Church.

Margie Viola Bonner James, 83, a resident of Barbour County Good

Margie V. James
Margie Viola Bonner James, 83, a resident of Elkins, entered into heaven
to be with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on Saturday evening, Sept. 2, 2006,
in Davis Memorial Hospital. She had been a resident of Barbour County Good
Samaritan Center in Belington since June 9 and previously had been a resident of
Colonial Place in Elkins.
Margie was a loving wife, mother and friend and leaves a testimony of trusting
Jesus.
She was born May 27, 1923, at Elkins, a daughter of the late Earle Dennis Bonner
and Mary Jane Carr Bonner.
On May 20, 1939, at Hambleton, she was married to Ola James Jr., who preceded
her in death June 29, 2006. They shared their love and life together for more
than 67 years and are now together again in heaven.
Surviving is one son, Denver William James of Mogadore, Ohio.
Preceding her in death were a daughter, Trudy Ann James; four brothers, Lorenzo,
Harold, Ray and Denver Bonner; and one sister, Chloe Howell.
Mrs. James was retired from Hardee’s of Elkins after 15 years of service. She
was an outreach partner with the Ernest Angley Ministries of Akron, Ohio. Margie
enjoyed serving the Lord through prayer, fasting and living in the word. She
enjoyed praising the Lord through playing the guitar and singing gospel songs.
The family would like to express their appreciation for the care that Margie
received while a resident of Colonial Place and Barbour County Good Samaritan
Center. Thank you for your kindness and compassion.

Ola James Jr.
Ola James Jr., 85, a resident of Elkins, entered into heaven to be with
his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on Thursday morning, June 29, 2006, in Barbour
County Good Samaritan Center at Belington. Ola was a kind and gentle man and
leaves a testimony of God’s love.
He was born Aug. 18, 1920, at Pierce, a son of the late Ola James and Goldie
Ellen Raines James.
On May 20, 1939, at Hambleton, he was married to the former Margie Viola Bonner,
who survives. They shared their love and life together for more than 67 years
and were in the same room at Barbour County Good Samaritan Center at the time of
his passing.
Also surviving are one son, Denver William James of Mogadore, Ohio; and two
sisters, Verda Riser and Keitha Ankrom, both of Hambleton.
Preceding him in death were a daughter Trudy Ann James; four brothers, Doyle,
Marvin, Kermit and Donald James; and one sister, Zelda Bender.
Mr. James was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army as a
private first class with Company H, 36th Armored Infantry Regiment of the 3rd
Armored Division. He went overseas in December 1944 and participated in the
Battle of the Bulge in Belgium and the Rhineland and Central European campaigns
before being wounded in action in Germany on April 15, 1945. His injuries came
while serving as a squad leader with the 36th Armored Infantry of the 3rd
Armored Division. He received the European African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon
with three battle stars, the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantry Badge.
Mr. James was retired from the Howes Leather Co. Inc., where he worked as a
leather roller machine operator. He was a member of Elkins Lodge No. 108 A.F.
and A.M. for more than 58 years and a member of Elkins Chapter No. 35 Royal Arch
Masons, where he was a long time officer and in September 1998 was awarded
Outstanding Member. He was an outreach partner with the Ernest Angley Ministries
of Akron, Ohio.

received while a resident of Colonial Place and the Barbour County Good

Leroy Jarvis Jr.
Leroy “Sonny” Jarvis Jr., 81, a resident of Buckhannon, died at 7:20
a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006, in Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration
Medical Center at Clarksburg.
He was born March 8, 1925, at Pittsburgh, Pa., the son of the late Leroy Jarvis
Sr. and Isabella Jeffers Jarvis.
He is survived by his former wife, Sandra Gilbert of Tennessee; four
brothers-in-law, Darrell Bennett of Buckhannon, Ronald Bennett of Buckhannon,
Paul Bennett of California and A. Wayne Bennett of Buckhannon; two
sisters-in-law, Phyllis Hollen of Buckhannon and Ladora Reynolds of Virginia;
many nieces and nephews; and good friend and hunting buddy, Dale Long of Gaines.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one aunt, Margaret
Jeffers, who raised Sonny.
He worked in maintenance for the West Virginia Division of Highways and was a
member of the International Union of Operating Engineers. Sonny served in the
U.S. Army during World War II. He was a Christian by faith. He was the last
known member of his family and was friendly, helpful and well loved throughout
the community. He will be missed by all.
Friends will be received from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at
Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct.
1, at the funeral home with the Rev. Mark Davis officiating. Interment will

Everett “Gene” Jennings Jeffrey, 78, of Valley Bend, went home to be
with the Lord on Monday, April 17, 2006.
He was born July 28, 1927, at Slagle, a son of the late John “Scott” Reagan
and Lucinda Queen Jeffrey.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Garland, Arnold, Lewis, Ray and
Norman Jeffrey; and three sisters, Norma Roberts, Myrtle Runyon and Martha
Williams.
Gene was a member of Mill Creek Memorial Mission in Mill Creek and lifetime
member of Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include his wife, Gradus Brumfield Jeffrey; one brother, Charles T.
“Ginger” Jeffrey; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be form 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Honaker Funeral Home in Logan.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 20, at the funeral home with the Rev.
Randy Long officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens at Godby.

Willard L. Jeffries
Willard L. Jeffries, 83, formerly of Upshur County, passed away Sept.
13, 2006, at the home of his son, Timothy Jeffries, at Canton, Mich.
Mr. Jeffries was a veteran of World War II where he served as a paramedic in the
armed forces.
A loving father of two sons, Philip and his wife, Irene, and Timothy and his
wife, Karen; and a daughter, Sheryl. He was a dear grandfather of Sophia,
Alexandra, Lambrose, Phil, Antonia, Eric and Kara; and great-grandfather of
Christina and Elizabeth. He was a loving brother to one sister, Dorothy Balducci.
Mr. Jeffries’ wife, Alberta; his parents, Troy and Rosa M. Jeffries; and four
sisters, Delta Barker, Regina Gould, Elnora Eddy and Lorine Ware preceded him in
death.

Betty Lou Jenkins, 61, a resident of Buckhannon, died Wednesday, Jan.
18, 2006, at her residence under the care of St. Joseph’s Hospice of
Buckhannon.
She was born March 5, 1944, in Upshur County, a daughter of the late Loy E.
Shipman and Velma Lantz Shipman.
On April 11, 1965, she was married to Ernest V. Jenkins, who preceded her in
death March 15, 1990.
Surviving are six daughters, Nancy “Tiny” Hoover of Cambridge, Pa., Betty
Jean (Jenkins) Jenkins, Nancy Lou Jenkins and Ernestine Sharpe, all of
Buckhannon, April and husband, Scott Yeader, of Warren, Ohio, and Margie Lynn
and husband, Mathew Wood, of Coldwater, Mich.; one son, Kenneth Sharp Jenkins of
Summersville; seven grandchildren; three sisters, Patricia Burnett of Adrian,
Wilda Dolan-Gregory of Buckhannon and Mary Smith of Summersville; and one

She was married to Hervy William Jennings, who preceded her in death Nov. 13,
1973.
Surviving are one daughter, Barbara Ann Mallow and husband, Dr. John Allen, of
Upper Tract; three sons, Hervy William Jennings II and wife, Betty Lou, of
Christiansburg, Va., Donald Earl Jennings of Eleanor and The Rev. Dr. George
Johnathon Jennings and wife, Midge, of Peterstown; one sister, Mary Jane Martin
of Parsons; one brother, Earl Delaney of Parsons; 10 grandchildren; 24
great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Albert and Tom; and two sisters,

Opal Malinda Johns, 93, of Route 6, Box 616, Buckhannon, died Friday,
Oct. 20, 2006, in St. Joseph’s Hospital.
She was born Oct. 20, 1913, at Cherry Fork, to the late William Grover and
Dorothy Fornash McCartney.
Mrs. Johns was married June 24, 1934, to William Jesse Johns, who preceded her
in death June 29, 1983.
She is survived by four sons, Harold Johns and wife, Anna Rush, of Flintstone,
Md., Howard Johns and wife, Sheila, and Nelson Johns and wife, Brenda, both of
Buckhannon, and Michael Johns and wife, Juanita, of Charleston; two daughters,
Frances Stewart of Denver, N.C., and Dorothy Koert and husband, Arthur, of
Buckhannon; three brothers, Kermit McCartney of Buckhannon, Delbert McCartney
and Cecil McCartney, both of Crawford; one sister, Murl Walton of Kanawha Head;
18 grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 12 stepgreat-grandchildren
and two great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Johns was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell McCartney and Wease
McCartney; and one granddaughter, Dorothy Rene’ Johns.
She was a homemaker and a member of Heaston United Methodist Church.

Eather A. Johnson, 63, a resident of 14 Thorne Ave., Elkins, loving
wife, sister and mother, went to be with our Lord Friday, Dec. 15, 2006, in John
Hopkins Hospital in Maryland. She had been in her usual health and death was
sudden and unexpected while in Baltimore visiting her children and
grandchildren.
Born May 6, 1943, at Rosehill, Va., she was the daughter of the late John E.
Campbell and Georgia Helen Spurlock Campbell Reimer.
On Feb. 29, 1976, at Baltimore, Md., she was united in marriage to Delmer
Johnson, who survives in Elkins. They had celebrated their 30th wedding
anniversary in May of this year.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Patricia Brewer
and husband, Jonathon, and Wilma Parker and husband, Mike; three sons, Ralph
Johnson, Richard Johnson and Johnny Lee Johnson and wife, all of Baltimore; two
sisters, Marlene Cummings of Elkins and Wandalene Fleet and husband, Herbert, of
Rosehill, Va.; .and two brothers, Homer Robert Campbell and wife, Darlene, of
Baltimore and William Keith Campbell of Pennsylvania. Also surviving are several
grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of friends, all of whom loved her
dearly.
Preceding her in death besides her parents was a sister, Lucille Toni Hassett;
and a granddaughter, Miriah Johnson.
Eather served as bookkeeper and secretary for Full Bible Church on Thorne
Avenue. She was a devoted Christian with a kind and loving heart. She never met
a stranger and always put others ahead of herself. She felt blessed when she
could help others. Eather was an animal lover, having raised ducks, peacocks and
ferrets, not to mention rabbits, dogs and cats. Eather ministered to everyone
she met and prayed for everyone to be saved. The people she touched while on
this earth will have a special place for her in their hearts forever. She will
be greatly missed.
At the request of the deceased, the remains were cremated. A memorial service
will be at the Full Bible Church on Thorne Avenue Wednesday, Dec. 20, from 7
p.m. until 9 p.m. Friends and family are welcome to share their stories and

Jerry Raymond Johnson, 58, a resident of Elkins, passed away at 3:55
a.m. July 19, 2006 in Louise A. Johnson Veterans Administration Hospital.
He was born March 10, 1948, at Baltimore, Md., a son of the late Raymond F.
Johnson and Anita P. Corley Johnson Grubowski.
He was never married.
Surviving are his stepfather, Gilbert Grubowski; three brothers, Joseph
Grubowski, Larry and Richard Johnson, all of Elkins; and three sisters, Barbara
Gammon of Elkins, Donna Johnson and Suzanne Morgan, both of Maryland. Two
nieces, Tonya Triplett and Anita Jones; great-nieces, Cynthia Triplett, Tosha
Triplett and Christine Triplett; and one great-nephew, Jared Iseli also
survives.
Jerry was a veteran of the Vietnam War having served with the U.S. Marine Corps.
Jerry was a very kind and loving brother and uncle.
At Jerry’s request, his remains were cremated. A private memorial service will

Kurt Vahn Johnson, 31, a resident of 401 Glendale Drive, Elkins,
departed this life Thursday, June 29, 2006, in University of Pittsburgh Medical
Center Presbyterian Hospital at Pittsburgh, Pa., after a long and difficult
battle with heart disease. He had been ill for the past five years and
hospitalized for the past three months.
He was born Tuesday, July 30, 1974, at Elkins, a son of the late Clifford J.
Johnson and Deloris J. Scott Johnson, who survives at Elkins.
Also surviving is one daughter, Kendra S. Johnson of Belington; two brothers,
Bradley S. Johnson and wife, Jennifer, of South Hill, Va., and Douglas K.
Johnson and his children, Connor and Mia, of Memphis, Tenn.; a special family
friend, Elwood “Ferg” Ferguson of Elkins; two special uncles, Don Scott of
Junior and Arthur Johnson of Martinsburg; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and
friends.
Preceding him in death besides his father were his paternal grandparents,
William P. “Jack” and Lilly Johnson; and his maternal grandparents, Robert
and Nellie Scott.
Kurt was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1992 and was a
former employee of Mongold Lumber Co. and later Coastal Lumber Co. He was a
member of the Goff Street Church of Christ. Kurt loved his family, was a
paintball enthusiast and was an avid sports and gaming fan, particularly of the
Pittsburgh Steelers and the West Virginia University Mountaineers.

Charles Arnold Jones, 85, a resident of Buckhannon, died at 11:30 a.m.
Friday, Dec. 30, 2005, in St. Joseph’s Hospital at Buckhannon.
He was born Dec. 7, 1920, a son of the late Ira Jones and Goldie Duncan Jones.
Surviving are two sisters, Virginia and husband, Ralph Goodwin, and Genevieve
Taylor, all of Buckhannon; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and
great-nephews.
Also preceding him in death were five brothers, Burl Jones, Keith Jones, Russell
Jones, Robert Noel Jones and Paul Jones; and one sister, Mary Jean Elbon.
He was retired from Upshur Coals Corp. and attended French Creek United
Methodist Church. He was a member of the West Virginia Farm Bureau and the
Knights of Pythians Lodge of Buckhannon. He had served in the U.S. Army during
World War II.

Ivy Audra Jones, 80, of Route 2, Belington, died early Friday
evening, Aug. 11, 2006, in Davis Memorial Hospital, following an extended
illness.
She was born Feb. 21, 1926, at Philippi, a daughter of the late Delbert J. and
Maddie Heatherly.
Twice married, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Cecil Skidmore,
and is survived by her second husband, Milford Jones, who resides at their home
at Route 2, Belington.
Also surviving are two daughters, Carolyn Jo Phillips and Linda Hill and
husband, Larry, all of Belington; one son, Gary Skidmore and wife, Sandy, of
Belington; five grandchildren, Rickey Lee Phillips and wife, Jamie, Timothy
Phillips, Robin McCauley and husband, George, Scott Skidmore and wife, Sue, and
Stacie Triplett and husband, Bill; five great-grandchildren, Sarah McCauley,
Jacob McCauley, Shyann Triplett, Heather Triplett and Tristan Skidmore.
She was also preceded in death by one son, Carol Wilbert Skidmore; by one
sister, Gay Henry; and by one brother, Fred Heatherly.
Mrs. Jones was a homemaker and was a former cook at the Myers Clinic in Philippi
and Bucklew’s Restaurant. She was a member of Valley Bend Baptist Church and
the Ladies’ Auxiliary of Laurel Mountain Post 410.

James Burton Jones, 69, a resident of Barron Avenue, Elkins, departed
this life Tuesday evening, Oct. 17, 2006, in Davis Memorial Hospital emergency
department as a result of a cardiac arrest suffered at his home.
He was born Sunday, Sept. 12, 1937, at Houtzdale, Pa., a son of the late John W.
“Jack” Jones and Isabelle Elizabeth Turnbull.
On July 31, 1969, at Elkins, he was married to the former Dorothy Ann
“Dottie” Nelson, who survives.
Also surviving are his in-laws, Paul and Dessie Ketterman Nelson of Elkins; two
sisters-in-law, Bonnie Luna and husband, Luis, of Salisbury, Md., and Donna
Nazelrod and husband, David, of Elkins; one nephew, John Paul Jones and wife,
Wilma, of Elkins; a special great-nephew, John William Jones and wife, Amanda,
and daughter, Kourtney, of Elkins; and three special puppies, Nikki, Dusty and
Sophie.
Preceding him in death was one brother, Robert Paul Jones.
He was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1955 and attended
Davis & Elkins College. He was a veteran of the Army National Guard and had
worked for the Columbia Gas Co. and Mountaineer Gas Co. for 37 years, retiring
in 2001 as a meter and regulator foreman. He was an accomplished piano player,
an avid turkey hunter and a member of Elkins Lodge 108, AF & AM and Landmark
Baptist Church.

He was born June 19, 1961, at Buckhannon, a son of Lulu Belle Tharp Jones of
Pickens and the late Herbert W. Jones.
Surviving are two daughters, Sarah Marie Jones of Buckhannon and Katelyn June
Jones of French Creek; three brothers, Shawn Jones and companion, Sarina Tharp,
of Pickens, Lyndon Jones and wife, Carry, of Hacker Valley and Owen Jones and
wife, B.J., of French Creek; two sisters, Lois Jones Metzner and companion,
Joshua Small, of Valley Bend and Christine Belle Crider and husband, Don, of
Missouri; one niece, Rachel Jones; four nephews, Quentin Metzner and fiancee,
Nicole Corker, Codey Jones, Kaleb Jones and Jacob Jones; and several aunts and

He was Protestant by faith. He was a miner and enjoyed hunting, fishing,
camping, pitching horseshoes and digging ramps. He was a loving father and
brother, and we will all miss him.

Martha M. Jones, 101, a resident of Volga, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006,
at her home.
She was born Jan. 16, 1905, at Pickens, a daughter of the late John and Hulda
Heller Balli.
On May 21, 1939, she was married to Louie Lile Jones, who survives at Volga.
Also surviving are nieces, Rose Ann and husband, Denzil Cowger, of Hacker Valley
and Hilda and husband, Jack Burroughs, of Waverly; nephew, Jim and wife, Anna
Fortune, of Fairfax, Va.; great-nieces, Cindy and husband, Kevin Miller, of
Hacker Valley, Janet and husband, Jeff Fliegel, of Mainesville, Ohio, and Carol
Shaub of Washington, D.C.; great-nephew, Gary Garden of French Creek;

She was also preceded in death by six sisters, Olga Harris, Anna Balli, Freda

She taught for 43 years in Webster, Randolph and Barbour counties. She attended
Queens Chapel United Methodist Church in Volga. During her life time, Martha
supported or made contributions to Philippi Heart and Hand, St. Judes
Children’s Hospital, Barbour County Good Samaritan Center, West Virginia
College, Alderson Broaddus College, American Red Cross —Katrina Relief, Queens
Chapel United Methodist Church, Baptist Children’s Home, National Foundation
of Cancer Research, Salvation Army, Cross Lines, Pleasant Hill Cemetery,
Burlington Childrens Home, Christian Childrens Fund, Upshur County Parish House
and had adopted a child in the Philippines.

a magnifying glass, all you see are the brush strokes. But if you stand back and
look at it, the complete picture comes together.
Aunt Martha’s life had many brush strokes. She lived through a century of
world events that include two World Wars, man exploring the moon, numerous
inventions like the automobile and airplane. But, when I asked her one time what
she remembered about these things, she didn’t have much to say. They were
perhaps neutral colors of paint in her life’s picture.
What she did like to talk about were her students over the 43 years she taught,
her love of farming the land and her family. These were bright shades of reds
and yellows in her picture—her joy.
And if her life was like a beautiful painting, then Uncle Louie must have been
her frame—a shinning gilded frame that drew attention to the picture it held.
Over the 66 years they were married, he did lovingly hold her and show her off
to the world, saying “This is my beautiful wife. Isn’t she wonderful!”
Their love completed each other.
In the hospital last week Aunt Martha asked God to take her home. Then she
expressed that she didn’t really want to go alone—she’d like Louie to go
with her. He gently explained that he couldn’t go until God called him.
“Well then,” she said, “I’ll just have to meet you there.”
The final brush strokes are added to this wonderful life’s work called Martha
Mary Balli Jones. The divine artist puts down his brush and sits back to look at
the painting. Each brush stroke has been purposely placed to create a beautiful
harmony in her life. He has been painting this piece for 101 years and as the
last brush stroke of paint dries, he smiles, declares it a masterpiece, and

Lucille Virginia Shreves Jordan, 80, a resident of Kings’ Daughters
Nursing Facility in Staunton, Va., passed away Tuesday morning, Sept. 5, 2006,
in the home.
She was born Sept. 29, 1925, at Elkins, a daughter of the late Fred and Bessie
Vanpelt Shreves.
On Feb. 11, 1943, at Elkins, she was married to Burl William Jordan, who
preceded her in death in April 1990.
Surviving are a son, William A. Jordan of Stuarts Draft, Va.; a daughter,
Carolyn Sue Shawkey of Waynesboro, Va.; one brother, Junior Shreves of Beverly;
two sisters, Leona Winans of Elkins and Fran Mosser of Orlando, Fla.; four
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were three brothers, Wilbert, Russell and Harold
Shreves.
Mrs. Jordan was a homemaker.

Peter M. Joseph
Peter Michael Joseph, 19, born in Spokane, Wash., on Sept. 25, 1986,
departed this life March 29, 2006.
He was the son of Maria Joseph and stepfather, Bill Hendershott, and Dennis
Louthan and stepmother, Dana Louthan, who survive.
Peter is survived by one brother, Craig Leo Louthan; four uncles and three
aunts, Peter Joseph and wife, Linda Lee, of Hilton Head, S.C., Victor and
Michael Joseph of Winfield, David Joseph of Elkins, Terri Stalnaker and husband,
Jody, of Avon, N.C., and Dana Lukey of Seattle, Wash.; paternal grandfather, Ron
Louthan and stepgrandmother, Sharon Louthan; and seven cousins.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Peter James and Ilah
Joseph; paternal grandmother, Arlene Rock; and a half brother, Ronnie Roy
Louthan II.
Peter attended Shadle High School and was an avid soccer player and baseball
player. He had been active in his youth group at the First Evangelical Free
Church and had traveled to Mexico twice on mission trips with the youth group.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 13, at St.
Brendan Catholic Church in Elkins with Fr. Charles McCallister as the Presider.
Interment of the cremains will follow in St. Brendan Catholic Cemetery. Tomblyn

Richard A. Jones
Richard A. Jones, 68, a resident of Union Community, Philippi, passed
away Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006, in United Hospital Center.
He was born June 26, 1938, at Philippi, a son of the late Sidney L. Sr. and
Edith Myers Jones.
Mr. Jones was united in marriage to his wife of 48 years, Peggy Bartlett Jones,
who survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Debbie and husband, Jim Wilson, of Fairmont,
Paula and husband, Joe Oliverio, of Belmont and Ricki Dadisman and Butch Ransom
of Winfield; one brother, Sidney Jr. and wife, Jean Jones, of Belington; four
grandchildren, Ashley and Heather Wilson of Fairmont, Alyssa Oliverio of Belmont
and Evan Dadisman of Winfield; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Jones was preceded in death by one sister, Pauline Hulley; one brother,
Bobbie Jones; and in-laws, Earl and Hope Bartlett.
Mr. Jones was a member of United Mine Workers of America 31 and a retired coal
miner. He was a farmer and enjoyed hunting, fishing and especially his
grandchildren, the love of his life.

today from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., the service

Robert E. Judy
Robert E. Judy, 53, a resident of Gilman, went to be with the Lord
Tuesday morning, Jan. 24, 2006, at his residence surrounded by his family. Death
was attributed to cancer.
He was born July 9, 1952, at Elkins, a son of the late Harl Judy and Betty
Norton Ferguson.
He is survived by his stepfather, Ellwood “Ferg” Ferguson, who raised him.
On May 19, 1972, at Elkins, he was married to the former Jo Ann Wolford, who
survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Chad E. Judy and wife, Kathy, of Jimtown and
Michael R. Judy and wife, Julie, of Kelly Mountain; one grandson, Tyler Chad
Judy; and a granddaughter to be born in March. One sister, Darlene Ferguson
Phares of Gilman; two brothers, Charles E. Judy of Elkins and Michael C. Judy of
Gilman; and several nieces and nephews also survive. He attended the schools of
Randolph County. He was a tractor-trailer driver for Cuptane Gas and Hess Oil
Co. for several years. He was an active member of the Leading Creek Volunteer
Fire Department prior to his illness. At the time he was stricken ill, he was
employed as a security guard for Quality Security and Investigations. He
attended Coffman Chapel Church and was a Methodist by faith. Bob was an avid
outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting with his brothers, fishing and camping with
friends and family. He was a beloved husband, father, brother and granddad and
will be missed greatly by all who loved him.
Friends may call rom 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home of
Elkins. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, from the funeral
home chapel with Pastor Charlie Arnold officiating. Interment will follow at the

Verda Smith Judy, 98, of Maysville, died Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006, in

James D. Justice
James Donald “Don” Justice, 78, of Green Bank, died peacefully at
home Thursday evening, Aug. 24, 2006, after a long illness. He exemplified the
relentless courage and indescribable stamina of a true warrior, and never, never
gave up in the battle he waged.
Born May 4, 1928, at Ashland, Ky., Don was the son of the late Ora Estill and
June Prince Justice.
He was also preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Marcella Sue Justice;
great-grandson, Evan Jacob Starghill; sister, Ethel Ashworth; and
brothers-in-law, Karl Schultz, Bill Salmon, George Stephens and Bob Stephens.
A wonderful gentleman, he was intensely devoted to his family and friends and to
life. He will be profoundly missed by his survivors, his wife of 61 years, Viola
Jane Stephens Justice; daughter, Mary Jeanette Robinson of Charleston; son,
James D. Justice Jr. of Winfield; son-in-law, Edward Lee Robinson;
granddaughters, Brooke Nicole Starghill of Upper Marlboro, Md., and Summer Beth
Robinson of Mooresville, N.C.; grandson, Colton James Justice of Winfield;
grandson-in-law, Eric Starghill; great-granddaughter, Eva Janae Starghill;
brother and sister-in-law, Rudolph and Anna Margaret Justice of Ashland, Ky.;
brother-in-law, Jerry Ashworth of Culloden; sisters-in-law, Maxine Salmon of
Grayson, Ky., and Christina Schultz of Columbus, Ohio; special nieces, nephews,
cousins and their respective families, as well as many dear friends who were
like family to him.
Owner and president of Justice Construction Co. of St. Albans, he was a member
and former officer of Associated General Contractors. He enjoyed traveling to
the Florida and Virginia beaches and the West Virginia Mountains. He and Viola
retired to the Green Bank area, followed by six years in Florida. They returned
to Green Bank where he spent his days encouraging and helping family, friends
and those he would meet day to day, as well as gardening and tending to his
beautiful rock gardens and scenic view along Deer Creek that welcomed visitors
to their home. He was an avid reader, listing the Bible first, then other
favorite books being on space science, mathematics and, always poetry. He was a
dedicated head deacon/trustee at Hebron Baptist Church of Green Bank where he
supervised and helped build the new sanctuary and parsonage. Its work continues
in great part due to his relentless faith and commitment.
He most assuredly fulfilled his life-mission statement to leave the world a
better place through his spirit of hospitality, generosity, compassion and
kindness, along with the many lovely buildings he constructed while contracting
that included large commercial edifices, schools, libraries and fire stations,
his service to his Lord and his beloveds, and husbandry of God’s earth.
Heartfelt thanks are offered to Mountain Hospice, every representative who
visited Don and the family wan exemplary and truly fine, caring and professional
individuals.
Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, at Hebron Baptist Church,
Route 92 in Green Bank with the Rev. James D. Crewe officiating. Visitation will
be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in Arbovale

Quentin Enos Justice, 84, a resident of Saint George, departed this life

Quentin Enos Justice, 84, a resident of St. George, departed this life
Thursday afternoon, May 18, 2006, at the Louis A. Johnson Veterans

He was born Saturday, Aug. 20, 1921, a son of the late Alonzo Justice and
Rosetta Carr Justice.
During August 1941, he was married to Summa Gladys Fridley Justice, who
survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Martha Rosetta Hardesty and husband, James, of
Ellsworth, Ohio; three grandchildren, Vicki Vitullo of Austintown, Ohio, James
Hardesty of Ellsworth, Ohio, and Michael Hardesty of Austintown, Ohio; two
great-grandchildren, Nichole Vitullo
and Louie Vitullo of Austintown, Ohio.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family having been preceded in
death by seven brothers and four sisters.
He was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1940. He was a former
employee and retired from the Monongahela Power Plant in Kingwood. He was a
member of the Eagles Club or Kingwood, the Isaak Walton League and the Preston
Masonic Lodge 90 of Kingwood.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons
on Monday from noon until 1 p.m., the funeral hour. Paul Christianson of the
Elkins Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses will be the presider. Mr.
Justice’s request for cremation will be honored and interment will follow at
