Margaret P. Umstot
Margaret Peyton “Polly” Umstot, 83, of Route 1, Box 197, Keyser, died Wednesday, May 24, 2006, in Dawn View Center at Fort Ashby.
Born on Aug. 30, 1922, at Headsville, she was a daughter of the late Richard E. and Willie Peyton (Parsons) Carskadon.
She also was preceded in death by a brother, Garrett “Bud” Carskadon.
Mrs. Umstot was a retired elementary school teacher in Mineral County, having taught at Burlington Elementary School and served as principal at Fountain Elementary School at the time the school was destroyed by fire. She then went on to teach at Fort Ashby Elementary School, retiring after 39 years of service. “Polly,” as she was affectionately known by many, together with her husband, Ray, also owned and operated Fairview Angus Farm at Reese’s Mill. In her youth, Polly attended the Headsville Elementary School, graduated from Duquesne High School in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Shepherd College in Shepherdstown. A leader for many years with the Reese’s Mill 4-H Club, she was also a member of Alpha Delta Sorority and the Reese’s Mill Community Education Outreach Society (Homemakers) for more than 60 years. She also belonged to Fort Ashby Senior Citizens and attended Centenary United Methodist Church at Reese’s Mill. She also was a charter member of Fort Ashby Lioness Club and hosted the annual Fort Ashby Lions Club Christmas Tree Sale Breakfast for several years.
Surviving are her husband of 59 years, Ray H. Umstot; two sons, William “Bill” Umstot and wife, Debbie, and Peyton Umstot and wife, Lisa, all of Keyser; one daughter, Sue Kay Lowther and husband, Joseph, of Elkins; six grandchildren, Amy Umstot and fiance, Ken Cowgill, Brad, Sarah and Matthew Umstot, all of Keyser; Angela Lowther Goff and husband, Kelly, and Robert Lowther and wife, Christina, all of Elkins; and one brother, Richard Carskadon and wife, Dorothy, of Romney.
Friends may call at Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, today from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home Saturday, May 27, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Mark Hickman and the Rev. Dallas Forren officiating. Interment will be in Headsville Cemetery at Headsville. Charles R. Updike
Charles R. “Rick” Updike, 62, of Port Allegany, formerly of Pittsburgh, Pa., died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, in Charles Cole Memorial Hospital at Coudersport, Pa.
He was born Jan. 12, 1944, at Pittsburgh, Pa., a son of Carroll A. and Dorothy Stephens Updike.
Mr. Updike was a 1962 graduate of Bethel Park High School and attended Kendall College in Evanston Ill. and the Pittsburgh Aeronautical Institute. Mr. Updike was an electrician, employed by U.S. Steel, Duquesne Works, in Pittsburgh, Pa. He later worked as a self-employed electrician in Elkins and then was employed by the Public Service of New Hampshire. After his retirement in 1994, he made his home in Port Allegany and on Annin Creek Road in Turtlepoint, Pa. He was an avid antique dealer, gardener, cook and enjoyed traveling.
He is survived by one daughter, Lori Updike Woodell of Merritt Island, Fla.; one son, John Charles Updike of Merritt Island, Fla.; one sister, Carol Updike Kline of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and one grandson, Joshua Edward Shreve of Merritt Island, Fla.
There will be no visitation. A celebration of life service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, at the Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes Inc, Port Allegany, Pa., with the Rev. Randall Headley officiating. Dorsey Upton
Dorsey Upton, 78, a resident of Route 4, Philippi, passed away Thursday, Feb. 23, 2006, in the Ruby Memorial Hospital.
He was born Sept. 2, 1927, in Philippi, a son of the late Lon and Blanch (McDaniel) Upton. He was twice married, first to Betty Marie (Sandy) Upton and on Dec. 5, 1974 to Deloris (Kurucz) Upton, who survives.
Also surviving are three daughters; Chris and husband, Mickey Fridley, Reta and husband, Tom Koontz, and Tina Sweeney, all of Philippi; two stepdaughters, Carol and husband, Dave Matko, of Philippi and Stephanie and husband, Kevin Buckley, of Morgantown; one son, John and wife, Karen Upton, of Philippi, three sisters, Martha Sandbridge, Lorraine Mitchell and Norma Jean Mitchell, all of Philippi; one brother, Frank and wife, Georgia Upton, of Cleveland, Ohio, 12 grandchildren, P.J. Owens, J.P. Ann Hinkle, David Fridley, Aereonna Fridley, Logan Fridley, Whittney Upton, Johnna Upton, Austin Upton, James Sweeney, Regina Sweeney, Paula Sweeney and Ronald Koontz, two step-grandchildren, Jeremy and Trevor Matko; and eight great-grandchildren, Abigail Fridley, Madison Fridley, Brandon Owens, Tyler Owens, Cody Koontz, Drake Koontz, Shakira Koontz and Ronald R. Koontz.
Mr. Upton was preceded in death by one son, two sisters and seven brothers. He was a dozer operator for several strip mines and retired from Alderson-Broaddus College as a security guard.
He was a Methodist by faith. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed bowling and gardening.
Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St., Philippi, today, Feb. 25, 2006, from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 26, 2006, 8 a.m. until 2 p.m., the service hour, with Pastor Davis Brown officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Memorial cemetery. Wright Funeral Home Services is in charge of arrangements for Dorsey Upton.  From 25 Feb 2006.
