Clara B. Cosner

Clara B. Cosner, 62, of Petersburg, died Saturday, April 5, 2008, in Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Va.

Family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Schaeffer Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at11 a.m. Tuesday at Brushy Run Church of God with Bishops Wayne Wicker, Aaron Davidson, Noah King, Johnny Stump and Sam Sponaugle officiating. Everett E. Samples

Everett E. Samples, 87, of Buckhannon, died Saturday, April 5, 2008, in United Hospital Center in Clarksburg.

He was born April 8, 1920, in Upshur County, a son of the late Amos and Orpha Loudin Samples.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Frena Long Samples.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Everett Gerald and wife, Gaylene Samples, of White Oak, Pa., and Larry A. and wife, Suzanne Samples, of Mesa, Ariz. Seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one brother, Raymond and wife, Joy Samples, also survive.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Mabel Douglas; and one brother, Waymen Samples.

Mr. Samples was a member of the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church. He was a member of Upshur County Shrine Club and was a 50-year member of Rock Cave Masonic Lodge No. 81 AF & AM.

Iris D. Davis

Iris Dessie Phillips Davis, 82, a resident of Parsons and more recently a resident of Cortland Acres Nursing Home at Thomas, departed this life Sunday evening, April 6, 2008, in the nursing home.

Lawrence Floyd

Lawrence “Larry” Floyd, 64, a resident of Whitmer and formerly of Baltimore, Md., passed away Wednesday, April 2, 2008, in Sunbridge Care of Salem where he had been a resident since January 2005.

Maude C. Harris

Mrs. Maude C. Harris, 87, a resident of 506 River Road in Belington, departed this life Saturday, April 5, 2008, at her home. She had been in her usual health and death was unexpected.

She was born May 11, 1920, near Belington, a daughter of the late Henry and Mary Etta Wolfe Harris.

Mrs. Harris is survived by one son, David Harris of Belington; two brothers, Eugene Harris and Herman Harris, and one sister, Alma Ware, all of Belington; and five grandchildren, Paulette Sandridge and husband, Ricky, of Belington, Paula McGee and husband, Tim, of Belington, Pauline Williams and husband, Steve, of Grafton, Eric Harris and wife, Kathy, of Elkins and Kelli Thomason and husband, Michael, of Belington. Also surviving are a former daughter-in-law, Norma Golden, 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband Paul Corley Sr., and her second husband, Elwood M. Harris. Also preceding her in death are one son, Paul P. Corley Jr., four brothers Lefty, Clifford, George and Richard Harris; five sisters, Bessie Delauder, Minnie Wilson, Mildred McCauley, Mary Farris and Betty Daugherty.

Mrs. Harris attended the schools of Barbour County and her life’s ambition was to be a caregiver to the elderly, in which she was fulfilled for more than 40 years. She formerly attended First Baptist Church of Belington and was a homemaker.

Graveside services will be conducted from Valley Bend Cemetery near Belington today at 1 p.m. with the Rev. F.L. “Wink” McQuain officiating. Vera M. Dean

Vera M. Dean, 91, of 10 Nona St., Buckhannon, died Saturday, April 5, 2008, in Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston.

She was born March 10, 1917, in Nicholas County, a daughter of the late Floyd and Ada Jack Hinkle.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James Weaver; second husband, Donal W. Wooddell; her third husband, Woodrow Dean; and one daughter, Annabelle Lee.

She is survived by three daughters, Rosalyn Lynn of Buckhannon, Sherry French of Canton, Ohio, and Betty Southworth of Lucasville, Ohio; one son, David Michael Wooddell of Boliver, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Paul Hinkle of Warren, Ohio; and one sister, Opal Wooddell of Rochester, Pa.

Mrs. Dean was a homemaker and Apostolic by faith.

Elizabeth G. Irons

Elizabeth Glendine "Pinky" Hornbeck Irons, 79, a resident of Elkins, departed this life early Monday morning, April 07, 2008, in Colonial Place. Death was attributed to cancer.

She was born July 24, 1928, at Kedron, Upshur County, a daughter of the late James Patrick Hornbeck and Blanche Osburne Hornbeck.

On Oct. 15, 1948, at Elkins, she was married to Lester Eldon Irons, who preceded her in death July 14, 2001.

She is survived by one sister, Kathleen Ross of Cortland, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by two brothers, Arnold Richard Hornbeck and one infant brother, Edsel Wayne Hornbeck; and four sisters, Hilda, Zelma, Dana and Geneva.

She attended the schools of Upshur County and was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1948. She worked for the C & P Telephone Co. of Elkins, the Ohio Bell Telephone Co. of Akron, Ohio, and the Akron National Bank of Akron, Ohio. She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church at Elkins. She enjoyed crafting and traveling.

Freddie Kimble, 55, of Moorefield, died Monday, April 7, 2008, in Grant County Nursing Home in Petersburg.

Iris D. Davis

Iris Dessie Phillips Davis, 82, a resident of Parsons, and more recently a resident of Cortland Acres Nursing Home at Thomas, departed this life Sunday evening, April 6, 2008, in the nursing home.

She was born Saturday, April 11, 1925, at Otter Creek, a daughter of the late Thomas Phillips and Cora Long Phillips Davis.

She was married to Herbert W. Davis, who preceded her in death July 6, 1982.

Surviving are one son, Alfred William Hershman and wife, Wilma, of Michigan; three grandchildren, Susan Stelzer, Kevin Hershman and Justna Hershman, all of Michigan; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She is the last surviving member of her immediate family having been preceded in death by one infant son; and three brothers, Webster, Alfred and Edgar Phillips.

She attended the schools of Tucker County. She had worked for the former Nella’s Nursing Home at Parsons and the former Parsons Footwear. She was an avid gardener.

A graveside service will be conducted at Collett Cemetery at Hambleton on Wednesday, April 9, at 1 p.m. The Rev. Eli Hostetler will officiate and interment will follow. Verlie V. Mooring

Loving wife, mother and “Maw Maw,” Verlie V. Mooring, 62, of Buckhannon, died Sunday, April 6, 2008, in Charleston Area Medical Center in Charleston.

She was born July 18, 1945, at Wayne, a daughter of the late Enoch and Eloise Ferguson Moore.

On June 15, 1963, she married the Rev. William F. Mooring, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Ann Tenney and husband, Randy, and Karen Cochran and husband, Jeff, all of Buckhannon; adopted daughter, Wendy Woofter and husband, Dave, of Buckhannon; three grandsons, Scott Cochran and Jonathan Cochran of Buckhannon and Howie Dean and wife, MaRanda, of Kenton, Ohio; seven granddaughters, Bethaney Cochran, Brittney Tenney, Kaitlyn Tenney, Larissa Tenney, Brianna Woofter, Stephanie Woofter and Andrea Woofter, all of Buckhannon; one great-grandson, Elijah Dean of Kenton, Ohio; three brothers, Winston Moore of Buckhannon, Rush Moore and Alfred Moore, both of Wayne; one sister, Bertha Cline of Wayne; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, William Frank Mooring II; one grandson, Jeffrey Cochran II; and two brothers, William and Roy Moore.

She was the pastor’s wife and mother of New Life Tabernacle in Buckhannon for 30 years and also Sunday school superintendent and fundraising coordinator. She was the retired owner and operator of Mooring Personal Care Home. She ministered in West Virginia and on missionary trips in South America, United Kingdom and Africa. She was the yard sale queen and extraordinary avid shopper. She enjoyed shopping, yard sales, family gatherings, bowling, swimming and all church activities. The love of her life was her husband, family and church.

Larry R. Ball

Larry R. Ball, 57, a resident of Mill Creek, passed away Monday, April 7, 2008, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

He was born Feb. 8, 1951, at Elkwater, a son of the late Aubrey and Ceola Stout Ball.

On June 9, 1973, he was married to the former Susan Serrett, who survives at Mill Creek.

Also surviving are two sons, Michael Ball and wife, Rachel, of Cassity and Jeffrey Ball and wife, Melanie, of Valley Bend; one daughter, Amanda Ball, at home; four brothers, Jimmy Ball of Niles, Ohio, Charles Ball of Mentor, Ohio, Bobby Ball of Elkwater and Willard Ball of Mill Creek; and five sisters, Wilma Jean Buhl of Chardon, Ohio, Sharen Cutright of Elkwater, Shirley Lanham of Mill Creek, Peggy Lanham of Elkwater and Donna Scott of Huttonsville. Six grandchildren, Chelsey George, Brady Ball, Emily Ball, Karus Ball, and Carly Jo and Clayton Ball; and his mother-in-law, Juanita Serrett of Mill Creek also survive.

Also preceding him in death were one infant brother and sister.

Larry was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Vietnam War. He worked as a fork lift operator for 17 years at Bruce Hardwood and was a member of the Teamsters Union. He attended the Memorial Mission Church, enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time with his family and grandchildren, and working on his Camaro.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at the Memorial Mission Church at Mill Creek. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, April 11, from the church with the Rev. Frank Long and the Rev. Randy Long officiating. Interment will follow in the Brick Church Cemetery where full military rites will be accorded at the gravesite. Raymond Forinash

Mr. Raymond Kent Forinash, 88, a resident of Conowingo, Md., passed away Sunday, April 6, 2008, in Havre De Grace, Md.

He was born Aug. 2, 1919, at Huttonsville, a son of the late James Earl Forinash and the late Myrtie Ann Swecker Forinash.

On Oct. 15, 1941, he was married to Dale Beatrice Mills Forinash, who preceded him in death in October 2006.

Surviving are two sons, Kenneth Forinash and wife, Stella, of Martinsville, Va., and Kevin Forinash and wife, Linda, of Cobbtown, Ga.; a daughter, Bonita Adkins and husband, Ollin, of Conowingo, Md.; and a sister, Virginia King of Kansas City, Mo. Nine grandchildren, Juanita Haden, Barbara Rowland, Kenneth Forinash Jr., Sean Forinash, Tami Zirkle, Jackie Brooks, Olga Adkins Coulbourne, Amy Blevins and Shane Forinash; 22 great grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren also survive.

Also preceding him in death were two brothers, Dainor and Dale Forinash; a sister, Beulah Forinash; and a great-great-granddaughter, Ashley Dowell.

Mr. Forinash was a veteran of the Army Air Corp serving during World War II. He was employed as a Shop Steward for the Baltimore County Board of Education prior to his retirement.

Friends may call from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. today at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 10, from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Rosalie Curtis-Barber

Rosalie Harper Curtis-Barber left us on March 30, 2008, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Rosalie was born on June 4, 1933, at Dryfork.

She graduated from Harman High School in 1950 and from Davis Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Elkins in 1954. In 1956, Rosalie joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in France where she met her first husband, Dr. Dale A. Curtis, and moved to Riverside, Calif. After Dale’s death in 1981, Rosalie went back to school and received her BSN from the University of Phoenix and worked as the director of perinatal services at Parkview Hospital in Riverside.

She married George L. Barber, and after her retirement, moved to San Clemente, Calif., where she lived until her death.

Rosalie was preceded in death by her first husband, Dr. Dale A Curtis; and her father Albert J. Harper.

She is survived by her husband, George L. Barber; her mother, Gladys Harper of Dryfork; daughters Daliene Curtis Shafer and Sharon Curtis; son Keith D. Curtis, DO; eight grandchildren; sisters, Colleen Eyth and Phyllis Nelson; brothers Harold Harper and David Harper; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were conducted April 4 in Riverside, Calif. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dryfork Assembly of God Church or charity of your choice.  From 9 Apr 2008.

Sherman O. Lambert, 87, of Franklin, died Monday April 7, 2008, in Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Va.

Virginia B. Wilmoth

Virginia Belle Everson Wilmoth, 88, a resident of Mt. Liberty community, Philippi, departed this life on Sunday, April 6, 2008, from Eagle Pointe Nursing Home at Parkersburg where she had been a resident for the past seven months.

She was born on Sept. 1, 1919, in Barbour County, a daughter of the late Roy and Madge Wagner Everson.

On Oct. 6, 1939, she married Raymond W. Wilmoth, who preceded her in death in July of 1983.

Mrs. Wilmoth is survived by three children, Allen Leroy and wife, Ruth Ellen, of Moatsville, Ellen Brooks and husband, Bill, of Noblesville, Ind., and Naomi Carr and husband, Delmas Gene, of Vienna. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Mrs Wilmoth was one of 17 children, of whom nine survive including Mary Nell Wilmoth of Magador, Ohio, Helen Ketchem of Freeport, Ohio, Kathern Foy and husband, Loye, of Martinsburg, Geneva Poe of Flint, Mich., Bert Everson of Tennessee, Don Everson and Raymond Everson (Brenda) of Flint, Mich., Tommy Everson (Veronica) and Cecil Everson (Roberta) of Ohio.

She was preceded in death by siblings Gladys Booth, Ruby Everson, Homer Everson, Russell Everson, Denzil Everson, Billie Everson and Virgil Everson.

Mrs. Wilmoth was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. Her home congregation was Barbour Church of Christ in Barbour County. She had most recently attended the Camden Avenue congregation in Parkersburg.

Friends and family will be received at Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St., Philippi, on Thursday, April 10, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Friday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. with Evangelist Albert Farley officiating. Charles E. Hipp

Charles Elwood Hipp Sr., 77, a resident of Elkins, departed this life Wednesday afternoon, April 9, 2008, at his home. He had been in declining health since March and death was attributed to cancer.

He was born Monday, March 30, 1931, at Greenland Gap, Grant County, a son of the late Howard Richard Hipp and Alice Jane Shell Hipp.

On Jan. 5, 1954, at Oakland, Md., he was married to the former Bernice Eloise Taylor, who survives at Elkins.

Also surviving are three sons, Charles E. “Chuck” Hipp Jr. of Elkins, Austin Garland Hipp of Falmouth, Va., and Marcus Wade Hipp and wife, Dana, of Clarksburg; one daughter, Ruth Ann Hipp Smith, of Elkins; five brothers, Glen R. Bittinger of Georgia, Hobert E. Hipp and Gregory T. Hipp, both of Mount Storm, Howard R. Hipp Jr. of Kearneysville and Steven A. Hipp of Nebraska; three stepbrothers, Kelvy Cosner of Petersburg, Clifford Shell of Buckhannon and Dale Cosner of Michigan; two sisters, Alice D. Bodenheimer of Clarksburg and Debra Ann Aronhalt, Kearneysville; and 14 grandchildren, 14 great- grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were one son, John A. Hipp Sr.; three brothers, Robert A. Hipp, Weldon Leon Hipp and Chester Coolidge Hipp; and one stepsister, Shirley Cosner.

He attended the schools of Grant County, had served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict, was a master carpenter, having worked for various companies building bridges and power plants, and at the time of his illness, he worked for the Super Car Wash of Elkins. He was a member of the National Rifle Association.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, April 12, Mr. Hipp will be moved to Wayside United Methodist Church at Poe Run Road where friends may call from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. J. Verlie V. Mooring

Loving wife, mother and “Maw Maw,” Verlie V. Mooring, 62, of Buckhannon, died Sunday, April 6, 2008, in Charleston Area Medical Center in Charleston.

She was born July 18, 1945, at Wayne, a daughter of the late Enoch and Eloise Ferguson Moore.

On June 15, 1963, she married the Rev. William F. Mooring, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Ann Tenney and husband, Randy, and Karen Cochran and husband, Jeff, all of Buckhannon; adopted daughter, Wendy Woofter and husband, Dave, of Buckhannon; three grandsons, Scott Cochran and Jonathan Cochran of Buckhannon and Howie Dean and wife, MaRanda, of Kenton, Ohio; seven granddaughters, Bethaney Cochran, Brittney Tenney, Kaitlyn Tenney, Larissa Tenney, Brianna Woofter, Stephanie Woofter and Andrea Woofter, all of Buckhannon; one great-grandson, Elijah Dean of Kenton, Ohio; three brothers, Winston Moore of Buckhannon, Rush Moore and Alfred Moore, both of Wayne; one sister, Bertha Cline of Wayne; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, William Frank Mooring II; one grandson, Jeffrey Cochran II; and two brothers, William and Roy Moore.

She was the pastor’s wife and mother of New Life Tabernacle in Buckhannon for 30 years and also Sunday school superintendent and fundraising coordinator. She was the retired owner and operator of Mooring Personal Care Home. She ministered in West Virginia and on missionary trips in South America, United Kingdom and Africa. She was the yard sale queen extraordinary avid shopper. She enjoyed shopping, yard sales, family gatherings, bowling, swimming and all church activities. The love of her life was her husband, family and church.

Wilma M. Delauder

Wilma Mardell (Snider) Delauder, 74, a resident of Valley Bend, passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2008, in Ruby Memorial Hospital.

She was born March 28, 2934‘, at Philippi, a daughter of the late Olen Henry “Babe” and Ruby Clarice (Jones) Snider.

She was united in marriage on Feb. 10, 1953, to Doyle Junior Delauder, who preceded her in death Dec. 3, 1986.

Surviving are three daughters, Cathy and husband, Bob Jones, of Parsons, Doyletta Nestor of Elkins and Anita Ferguson of Valley Bend; one son, Daniel Delauder of Charleston; one sister, Arlene Delauder of North Carolina; two brothers, Robert “Bob” and wife, Marsha Snider, of Flemington and Richard “Dick” and wife, Nancy Snider, of Belington; two sisters-in-law, Paulette Snider of Woodbridge, Va., and Judy Snider of Philippi; four grandchildren, Tarra Sponaugle, Maria Nestor, Mathew and Joshua Ferguson; and one great-grandchild, Austin Sponaugle

Mrs. Delauder was preceded in death by two brothers, Olen Junior Snider and Gary Lynn Snider.

Mrs. Delauder worked as a certified nurse’s aid for Family Health, Davis Health and Hospice Care Corp. Wilma was a member of the Church of Christ, and she loved spending time with her family and will be missed.

Zona Mae Davis Turner, 98, of Onego, went home to be with her Lord, Tuesday, April 9, 2008, at her home in Onego.

Charles Elwood Hipp Sr., 77, a resident of Elkins, departed this life Wednesday afternoon, April 9, 2008, at his home. He had been in declining health since March and death was attributed to cancer.

Georgia Hershman

Georgia Marie Hershman, 93, of Webster Springs, died Wednesday, April 9, 2008, in Broaddus Hospital at Philippi.

She was born Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1914, at Arden, a daughter of the late Ellis Mitchell and Denise Murphy Mitchell.

She was married to Murl Hershman, who preceded her in death.

Surviving are one son, Gary (Linda) Hershman of Lakewood Ranch, Fla.; two granddaughters, Bobbi Lara of Washington, Fla., and LeAnn Harrison of North Carolina; two grandsons, Michael Hershman of Salem, Va., and Chris Hershman of Little River, S.C.; eight great-grandchildren; and 30 nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one two sons, Robert Hershman and Murl Hershman Jr.; one sister, Martha Hensley; and four brothers, Paul, Denton, Robert and Adrian Mitchell.

She was a store clerk and a member of Webster Springs Garden Club and Webster Springs Methodist Women.

Hubert H. (Tommy) Fleming, 89, of Route 3, Buckhannon, the Lick Run community, died Thursday, April 10, 2008, in St. Josephás Hospital Nursing Care Facility.a

He was born on July 17, 1918, at Knawles Creek, in Braxton County, a son of the late Perry I. and Lillie Garrett Fleming.

He was united in marriage Dec. 20, 1953 to Edra Ruth Crawford Fleming, who preceded him in death on Jan. 24, 2002.

He is survived by one son;, Dr. Hubert L. Fleming and wife, Chris of of Phoenixville, Pa.; one daughter, Debra K. Dean and husband, Gary, of Buckhannon; and daughter-in-law, Pam Fleming Zinn of Glenmore, Pa. He is also survived by three granddaughters, Jaime and husband, Eric Slotkin, of Bryn Mawr, Pa., Megan and husband, Ryan Bombick, of Exton, Pa., and Amanda Fleming of Glenmore, Pa.; two grandsons; Joshua Dean and fiancee, Amanda Smith, of Buckhannon and Ben Fleming of Glenmore, Pa.; two stepgrandchildren, Jeff Dean and fiancee, Sue Heater, and Shelly Skelton and their families. Also survived by three sisters, Jessie Hickman and Betty Brown both of Heaters and Marjorie Gregory of Massillon, Ohio; and one sister-in-law, Reva Fleming of Burnsville. Several nieces and nephews and special neighbors and friends, Jim and Mavis Shiflett; Kevin Shiflett and family and Lora Bryant and family also survive.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Harley I. Fleming; and one sister, Janet Pritt.

Mr. Fleming was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. He was a retired school bus driver for Braxton and Upshur county board of education. He enjoyed farming.

Maurice W. Osburn

Maurice William Osburn, 77, of Buckhannon, died Tuesday, April 8, 2008, in Southern Ocean County Hospital in Manahawkin, N.J.

He was born Aug. 4, 1930, at Ellamore, a son of the late Earnest and Stella Cutright Osburn.

On April 20, 1957, he married Norma Jean Carpenter, who preceded him in death on Dec. 25, 2004.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Osburn.

He is survived by three sons, Richard Osburn of Little Egg Harbor, N.J., Randall Osburn of Buckhannon and Robert L. Osburn and wife, Ann, of Buckhannon; one grandson, Brayden William Osburn of Buckhannon; five granddaughters, Tonya Osburn of Panama City, Fla., Amanda McCartney of Buckhannon, Kara Chenoweth of Buckhannon, Danae Rooker of Campbellsville, Ky., and Megan Osburn of Little Egg Harbor, N.J.; two great-granddaughters, Sarrah Sloan of Panama City, Fla., and Brooklynn Rooker of Campbellsville, Ky.; three great-grandsons, John Sloan Jr. of Panama City, Fla., Blake Osburn of Buckhannon and Kaden Cave of Campbellsville, Ky.; and two sisters, Garnet Jean Hornbeck of Saybrook, Ohio, and Darlene Perry of Sylvania, Ohio.

Mr. Osburn was an electrician for Union Carbide. He was a member of Sand Run Baptist Church, Buckhannon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3663 and Frank B. Bartlett Post 7 American Legion.

Velma S. Shoulders

Velma Sue Shoulders, 65, of Adrian, died Wednesday, April 9, 2008, in Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston.

She was born July 21, 1942, at Linn, a daughter of the late Archie and Ethel Carr McHenry.

On Aug. 3, 1963, she married Elza Kyle Shoulders, who preceded her in death on Nov. 12, 1995.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles, Jackie and Larry McHenry; and one sister, Virginia Carte.

She is survived by one son, Russell Shoulders and wife, Kristine, of Buckhannon; three grandsons, James Hebb, Joshua Black and Adam Shoulders, all of Buckhannon; three granddaughters, Kristen Hebb, Katie and Amber Shoulders, all of Buckhannon; one great-granddaughter, Faith Hyre of Buckhannon; three brothers, Junior McHenry of Cross Lanes, Eugene McHenry of Akron, Ohio and Wayne McHenry of Lost Creek; and one sister, Marie McHenry of Duck.

Mrs. Shoulders was a homemaker and a Christian by faith.

Mary Kump

Mary Gamble Kump, 92, a resident of Elkins, and more recently a resident of Valentine’s Personal Care Home where she chose to live the last years of her life, departed this life Friday afternoon, April 11, 2008, at the home. Her family appreciates the kind and loving support given to Miss Kump by the caring staff at Valentine’s.

She was born Friday, Aug. 13, 1915, at Elkins, the fifth child of the late Edna Scott Kump and Gov. Herman Guy Kump. She is survived by a host of loving nieces and nephews. Five of them remain in Elkins: Hazel Kump Burford, Cyrus Kerr Kump, Scottie Roberts Wiest, Heather Roberts Biola and Samuel Kump Roberts.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Preceding her in death are her siblings, Cyrus S. Kump, Frances K. Wooddell, Peggy K. Roberts, Elizabeth L. Kump and Benjamin F. Kump.

Kump was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1933 and attended Davis & Elkins College for two years. She earned a bachelor of science degree at West Virginia University in 1937 and a master’s degree and doctorate of law at George Washington University in 1955.

In the 1930s, she was a West Virginia State 4-H Leader and a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority. She served as a maid of honor for the Mountain State Forest Festival in 1934 and served as queen of the Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester, Va.

In the 1940s, she taught mathematics and science at Elkins High School and Beverly High School, and she taught in Prince George County, Md., to pay her way through law school. After law school, she began teaching for the Defense Department in military dependent schools in 1954. Her assignments took her to Chateauroux, France; Casablanca, Morocco; Bittburg, Germany; Laon-Courvon Air Base, France; Naples, Italy; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Naha Air Base, Okinawa; and Clark Air Base, Philippines. She retired to live in Elkins at her family home place in 1990.

When she returned, Kump said in an interview, “The world is a very interesting and a very small place. I’ve been fully around the world three times. Wherever I’ve gone, I’ve found fellow countrymen.”

She was active in church and civic organizations after she returned to Elkins. She was a member of the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church where she served as elder and trustee. In 1992, she attended the Democratic National Convention as a West Virginia National Committee Women. For more than 50 years, she was a member of the John Hart Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of Davis & Elkins College Aid and a member emerita of the American Association of University Women. She served as a volunteer at the Davis Memorial Hospital, and she taught Bible School at her church.

The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday. On Tuesday, Miss Kump will be moved to the Beverly Cemetery where graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. The Rev. Douglas A. Jenkins and the Rev. Janet S. Jenkins will officiate and interment will follow. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 25. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Randolph County Scholarship Fund at Davis & Elkins College, 100 Campus Drive, Elkins W.Va. 26241 or to the donor’s favorite charity in memory of Miss Kump.
