Charles Shields

Charles "Chuck" Shields, 70, passed away peacefully and fearlessly on April 21, 2005 at his home in Decatur, Tenn. 

He was a native of Parsons W.V., born January 10, 1935, to the late Howard and Justina Shrout Shields.  He was a graduate of the class of 1954 at Parsons High School. 

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a graduate of West Virginia University where he earned a B.S. degree in forestry.  He worked 20 years with the U.S. Forest Service on the Cibola and Santa Fe National Forests in New Mexico, and the Sitgreaves and apache National Forests in Arizona. 

He was a dedicated member of Lions International. In 1978 as president ofhis local club he was awarded the 100% President's Pin. 

Survivors are his wife of 39 years, Iva Crisp Shields of Decatur, TEnn.; two sons and one daughter-in-law Charles "Carlos" and Holly Shields of Magnolia, Ark. and Justin Shields of Nashville, Tenn.;p two sisters and one brother-in-law Patricia and Dr. Donald Kiser of Keyser and Judith Cordier of Plano, Texas; one granddaughter Kate Shields of Magnolia, Ark.; nine nephews and one niece, Jim, Bill and Ron chase, Rob, Patrick and David Wratchford, Chris and Keith Kisner, Louis Cordier and Anne Cordier Weaver. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother William "Bill" Shields; two sisters and two brothers-in-law Ella Virginia and Ronald Chase, Elizabeth "Mickey" and robert "Bob" Wratchford and a special aunt Loretta Shrout. 

Charles had been in declining health since 1981.  He suffered a major stroke after heart surgery in 1997, but death was attributed to lung cancer.  He continued to communicate his sense of humor until his last hours.  He also communicated his comfort and appreciation of prayers.  His family is most grateful for the kindness and encouragements given during these many years, especially the prayers of Christians.  He was always proud to say he was form West Virginia.  

funeral services were held April 23, 2005 in the chapel of Bowers Funeral Home in Decatur, Tenn.  Officiating were Jeff Ledford, a friend and deacon from First Baptist Church of Decatur and Rev. Charles "Carlos" Shields, his son and minister of youth at Central Baptist Church in Magnolia, Ark. Graveside services were held on April 24 at the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery south of Decatur, Tenn.  Bowers Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.   

Dorothy Valentine

Dorothy Ellen Mullenax Valentine, age 82 years, a resident of Chambersburg Road, Columbus, Ohio, departed this life early Thursday morning, Dec. 29, 2005, in the Monterey Care Center at Grove City, Ohio. She had been in declining health.

She was born Tuesday, Nov. 13, 1923, at Sugarlands Community, Tucker County, a daughter of the late Amos Gilbert Mullenax and Ethel Zady Hedrick Mullenax.
On July 27, 1972, at Reno, Nevada, she was married to Bobby Keith Valentine, who survives at Columbus, Ohio.

Also surviving are two sons, Gilbert Bohon of Old Fort, Tenn., and Steve Bohon of Sarasota, Fla.; two daughters, Barbara Jordan and husband, William, Ky., and Sherry Penrod and husband, Roger, of Bradenton, Fla.; one brother, Grover Mullenax and wife, Betty, of Philippi, W. Va, one sister, Verda L. Weese and husband, Earl E., of Montrose, W. Va., 12 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Preceding her in death besides her parents are one infant son, Timothy; and one brother, Noah Lee Mullenax.

She attended the school at Sugarlands and had worked as a nurse’s assistant at Davis Memorial Hospital at Elkins, at Reno, Nev., and at Santa Rosa having retired in 1978, and was a homemaker. She was a member of Parsons Baptist Church at Columbus, Ohio, where she was baptized with a granddaughter, Peggy. She enjoyed needlepoint, sewing, was a great cook, and loved to fix large meals for her family in her home, and going to the park on picnics.

The family received friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins on Sunday, Jan. 1 from 5 to 8 p.m. Final rites were conducted at the funeral home chapel on Monday, Jan. 2, 2006 at 10 a.m. Pastor Ralph Andrus officiated and interment will follow at Mountain State Memorial Gardens.  The Lohr & Barb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Dorothy Ellen Mullenax Valentine.
