Clyde L. Long

Clyde Lowell Long, age 67 , a resident of Parsons, departed this life Wednesday morning, Jan. 10. He had been in his usual health and death was attributed to massive heart attack.

He was born Sunday, March 12, 1939, at Pickens, a son of the late William Ernest and Myrtle Phipps Long.  On June 4, 1960, at Mill Creek, he was married to the former Patricia Ann “Pat” Bentley Long, who preceded him in death Oct. 11, 2003.

Surviving are one son, James David Long and wife Judy Evans Long of Holly Meadows; one brother, the Rev. Frank and Luene Currence Long of Mill Creek; one sister, Hazel Cool of Dianna; two grandchildren, Ashley Hannah Long and Ethan Marcus Long, both of Holly Meadows; a sister-in-law, Hilda Long of Buckhannon; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Chester and Cecil Sterling Long; and two sisters, Irene and Arnetta Long.

He was a graduate of Pickens School. He was a labor foreman at Mt. Storm. He was an equipment operator for Dewey Wilfong, and a self-employed carpenter with his son David from 1984 until 1996. He was a past member of the Parsons City Council and a current member of the Parsons Park Board for several years. He attended Riverview Chapel Church. He was an avid bluegrass fan, having been instrumental with Pickin’ in Parsons. He was a motorcycle enthusiast. He was a kind and caring husband, father, papaw and brother, who will be sadly missed.

The family received friends at Riverview Chapel Church at Porterwood on Friday, Jan. 12  from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Jan. 13, from noon until 1:30 p.m., the funeral hour. Pastor Dick Gadd and Pastor Loren Metzner officiated and interment followed in Mountain State Memorial Gardens. The Lohr & Barb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Clyde Lowell Long. John Parsons

A private family service will be conducted for John M. Parsons, 79, of Granville. 

Dr. Parsons, who was an educator for more than 33 years and retired from the State Ohio Department of Education on Dec. 31, 1982, died on Dec. 27, 2006, at his home.  He was born Oct. 26, 1927, in Holly Meadows, outside of Parsons, to the late Addie Mae (Mason) and Cyrus H. Parsons. 

He was listed in Who's Who in the Midwest.  Dr. Parsons received a B.S. degree with Fairmont State College, Fairmont; a master's degree from the University of West Virginia; and a Ph.D. from Ohio University. 

Dr. Parsons served two times in the Department of Education, once from 1960-70 and another from 1978-82.  In 1960, he was associated with the department as supervisor of Pupil Transportation and in 1964 was appointed director of the Division of School Finance and Transportation.  IN 1970, he became assistant superintendent of Dade County Schools in Miami Fla. he was honored by the Dade County school board for his work, receiving the first resolution conferred by the board honoring an administrator.

Dr. Parsons served a six-year tenure as assistant superintendent of the Toledo City Schools and was interim superintendent of the district for eight months before joining the State of Ohio Department of Education as executive director of the Office of School Management Assistance.  He was honored by the State Board of Education for his service to the department and Ohio schools and was executive director emeritus.  Before these administrative positions, he was a teacher in Chesapeake, Md., a teacher and coach in Meigs County and the superintendent of the Rutland Ohio School District.  

After his retirement, together with Dr. Loren Briggs, he opened a consulting firm that conducted in-depth financial studies of school districts and small businesses. 

DR. Parsons served in the U.S. Army in World War II and the Korean War, in which he was the army representative for the Dependent School Sector Headquarters in Paris.

Dr. Parsons was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Granville, where he served as an elder, and a former member of the Granville Rotary Club.  HE also was a member of the Middleport Lodge 363 F & A.M.(52 years), The Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Ohio, Pomeroy Chapter 80, Grand Council Royal and Select Masons of Ohio, Bosworth Council 45 and the Ohio Valley Knights Templar 24 Commandery, Middleport.  He also served as a volunteer basketball coach.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years JoAnn A. Parsons; son Jeffrey Mason Parsons of ORlando, Fla.; daughter and son-in-law Julia Ann and Lee Dixon of Masfield; grandchildren John Mason and Lindee Clear Parsons of Orlando, Fla, and Tanner Parsons Dixon of Mansfield; and a sister Ruth Brunner of Lunsdale, Pa. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters.
