Doris Calhoun
Doris Carbaugh Stevens Calhoun, age 87, of Petersburg, died Tuesday, Jan. 17, at the Grant County Nursing Home.
She was born Aug. 9, 1918, in Thomas, she was the daughter of the late George F. Carbaugh and Mary Catherine Swartz Carbaugh.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis F. Calhoun; a granddaughter; two sisters, Phyliss Carbaugh Barnes and Norma Carbaugh Constable; and two brothers, Bruce and Fred Carbaugh.
She graduated from Thomas High School in 1936 and worked as a bookkeeper for Miners & Merchants Bank in Thomas until 1961. She played the organ for Thomas Presbyterian Church for 10 years.
She is survived by a daughter, Judith A. Stevens Reedy and husband, Hurley Reedy of Moorefield; one grandson and three great-grandchildren.
Family received freinds on Thursday, Jan. 19, from 4-7 p.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 20, at 11 a.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home with interment in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Thomas. The Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg was in charge of the arrangements.
James Elza
James "Todd" Elza, 40, of Woodbridge, Va., died at Potomac Hospital on Jan. 22.
Mr. Elza was a resident of Woodbridge for over 6 years. He was a loving husband, father and friend to many. Mr. Elza owned his own CPA business and was a member of the Virginia Society of CPAs and a BNI group.
He is survived by his wife Lindsey Elza; son Matthew Elza and daughter Miranda Elza, all of Woodbridge, VA; his mother Roberta Elza of Parsons; brother Bill Elza and wife Tracy of Kerens; and brother Eric Elza and his wife Susie of Masontown.
He was preceded in death by his father jack W. Elza
Friends may call at Miller Funeral Home 320 Golansky Blvd. on Thursday, Jan. 26 from 6-9 p.m. A church of the Nazarene Service will be held at the Miller Funeral Home on Friday, Jan. 27 at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Woodbine Church Cemetery.
Mary Michael
Mary M. Bennett-Michael, 79, of Mount Storm Village, died Jan. 15, at Hopemont Hospital, Hopemont.
She was born Feb. 16, 1926, at Horse Shoe Run, she was the daughter of the late Charlie A. and Dove M. (Knotts) Snyder. She was also preceded in death by two husbands, Henry Bennett in 1964 and Raymond Michael in 1985.
Survivors include four sons, one sister, two brothers, seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, 32 S. Second St. Oakland, MD. on Tuesday, Jan. 17. Services were held at the funeral home parlor on Wednesday, Jan. 18 with Rev. William McCallister officiating. Interment followed in Accident Cemetery, Horse Shoe Run.
Rev. Terry Fairbanks ![]()
The Rev. Terry Glen Fairbanks, age 69, retired American Baptist Minister and 1957-1958 West Virginia University football captain, departed this life Monday afternoon, Jan. 16, 2006, after being stricken with a massive heart attack while driving along the Dry Fork River at Hendricks. He was a former resident of Tucker County and more recently a resident of Morgantown.
He was born Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1936, at Parsons, a son of the late Benjamin Warren Fairbanks and Pauline Delaney Mullenax Fairbanks and was raised by his grandmother, Myrtle Delaney Dye. On Oct. 28, 1956, at Parsons, he was married to the former Judy Dale Barr, who survives. They had celebrated forty-nine years of marriage.
Also surviving are five sons, Robert Fairbanks and wife Barbara of Reedsville, Danny Fairbanks and wife Laura of Atlanta, Ga., Michael Fairbanks and wife Elizabeth of Morgantown, Patrick and Timothy Fairbanks, both of Morgantown; one daughter, Terra Hamrick and husband, Travis, of Canaan Valley; fifteen grandchildren, Jason, Adam, Brandon, Briana, Bethany, Brady, Christian, Jackson, Benjamin, Lacey, Allyson, Tyler and Megan Fairbanks and Travis and Brandyn Hamrick; one great-granddaughter, Natalie Belle; one brother, Lenny Delaney and wife Jenny, of Morgantown; mother-in-law, Evelyn Barr of Parsons; and sister-in-law, Madonna DiBacco and husband Jerome; two nephews and a niece, all of Parsons.
Preceding him in death besides his parents were one infant son, Anthony Scott Fairbanks; and one sister, Reba Williams.
He was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1955, where he was valedictorian, class president and earned all-state honors in football, basketball and baseball.
He earned a four-year scholarship from the former coach Art Lewis at West Virginia University. While playing football at West Virginia University, Terry was team captain while wearing the number 45, was Academic All-American, played offensive and defensive end and was awarded the 1958 Pittsburgh Curbstone Coaches-Most Valuable Player Award. He graduated from WVU in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and entered the U.S. Army as a lieutenant, where he also played football for the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC, and served as an artillery officer in the Target Acquisition Battalion at Fort Sill, Okla. After his military service, Terry worked as a watershed engineer with the Soil Conservation Service for thirty-four years. Among the many watershed projects he worked with are those at Wheeling Creek, Hughes River, South Branch of the Potomac and the Mud River. He initiated planning for emergency channel cleanup on Scotts Run and led emergency Soil Conservation Service work after the 1985 flood. On the national level, he helped establish training programs for dam safety. He also worked for Blaine Engineering to plan the flood control wall in Tucker County.
Terry was ordained by the Sabraton Baptist Church and the Goshen Association in 1985, after completing education course work in Pastoral Ministry through the West Virginia American Baptist Convention. Terry preached in many churches throughout the state, including a twenty-seven year ministry at Bethel Baptist and retired from the ministry at the First Baptist Church of Masontown. Terry was a Chaplain for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and played on many softball teams in the area. He also coached the Sabraton Junior High School football team and was instrumental in starting a junior high football program in Morgantown. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer, and all of his children starred in Morgantown sports.
The family received friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19. On Friday, Jan. 20, the Rev. Fairbanks will be moved to the Saint John’s United Methodist Church at Parsons, where final rites will be conducted at 11 a.m. The Rev. James Cooley and the Rev. David Spence will officiate and interment will follow at the Bethel Cemetery at Holly Meadows, where the H.W. Daniels Post #29, American Legion and the Tygarts Valley Post #3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars conducted full military rites. The Lohr & Barb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for the Rev.
