Mardean L. Barb
Mardean Lee Boyles Barb, 88, a resident of Parsons, departed
this life Monday evening, Jan. 22, 2007, at her home. She had been in declining
health.
She was born Wednesday, Feb. 6, 1918, at Belington, the daughter of the late
Reuben Boyles and Madge Poling Boyles. On Dec. 21, 1942, at Washington, D.C., she was married to Sgt. Charles Franklin
Barb, son of Frank and Bessie Barb of Parsons. He preceded her in death Feb. 12,
1978.
Surviving are two daughters, Beverly J. Mullenax and Dorothy L. Murphy and
husband Roger of Parsons; one sister, Betty Monroe and husband Jim of
Mitchelville, Md.; seven grandchildren, Ronald A. Mullenax and wife Judy,
Randall L. Mullenax and wife Lori, Donna Jean Roy and Robert Chad Mullenax and
wife Amy, Rebecca L. Moore and husband Robert, David Franklin Murphy and wife
Stephanie and Angela Lee Davis and husband Chris; thirteen great-grandchildren,
Hannah and Isaac Moore, Evan, Josie and Cameron Mullenax, Joshua Mullenax, Brady
Mullenax, Derek, Kylie and Sydney Moore and Caten, Tucker and McKinley Murphy;
and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one son-in-law, Denzil A. Mullenax.
She was a graduate of Belington High School with the class of 1935.
Mardean had a very full and active life first working in Washington, D.C., in the Office of Emergency Management and later working at Tucker County Bank at Parsons until her retirement in May of 1983. She was a very active member of First United Methodist Church at Parsons, where she was organist for more than fifty years. She was a member of Parsons Chapter #91 Order of the Eastern Star, the Liberty Rebecca Lodge #95, United Methodist Women and the Women’s Guild.
She also
served on the board of directors at the Parsons Senior Center and played piano
for years for the Goldenaires. She served on the Board of Directors of Five
Rivers Library for thirteen years. During 2004, she received a Certificate of
Appreciation from the Parsons High School Alumni Hall of Fame. She had several
hobbies and enjoyable pastimes including playing golf, bowling, bridge and
bingo.
Family and friends joined in the celebration of Mardean’s life Friday, Jan. 26
with
visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Lohr & Barb Funeral
Home of Parsons. On Saturday, Jan. 27, Mrs. Barb was moved to First United
Methodist Church at which time funeral services were conducted at noon. The
Reverend Jeff Anderson officiated and interment followed in Parsons City
Cemetery for Mardean Lee Boyles Barb. Condolences may be expressed to the family

Roger W. Haller 
CSM Roger Woods Haller, U.S. Army National Guard, of the Headquarters, 70th
Regiment (LDR), 49, of Davidsonville, Md., died Saturday, January 20, 2007 along
with eleven other soldiers in a helicopter crash northeast of Baghdad, Iraq.
He was born on July 9, 1957 in Murrysville, Pa., he was the son of Ann "Timmie"
Haller of Cambridge, MD, and the late William S. Haller, Sr. Roger was a
graduate of Cambridge High School, Class of 1975 and a 1979 graduate of Fairmont
State University.. He received a bachelors degree in History and Political
Science. It was Roger's interest in Political Science which led him to become a
soldier in the Army National Guard.
From December 1995 to present time, CSM Haller held many
instructor positions within the 70th Regiment, Reisterstown, Md. In
October 2002 he was a the Regimental First Sergeant until March of 2004 when he
assumed the position of GS Battalion Operations Sergeant. In February 2006
he selected to hold the highest enlisted position within the regiment, the
regimental Command Sergeant Major. He held this position until his
death. While Roger resided in Cambridge, he was a member of the White
Haven United Methodist Church, Church Creek, Md.
Surviving is his mother Ann "Timmie" Haller, three children Daniel
Woods Haller, Morgan Elizabeth Haller, Kathryn Alexandra Haller, from the union
of his former wife Sandy Hockman, all of Cambridge, Md., a sister Anne Sillaman
and her husband Ron of Riva, Md., three brothers William S. Haller, Jr. and his
wife Mary of Germantown, Md., Frederick R. Haller and his wife Sally N., John H.
Haller, a niece Jennifer Ann Haller, all of Cambridge, MD and a host of
friends. Sandie Hockman is formerly of Parsons and her parents Jack and
Linda Hockman still live in Parsons.

Mamie Johnson
Mamie Golden Fotlz Sager Johnson, 88, of Broadway, Va. died Jan. 25 at her second residence in Titusville, Fla.
She was born Oct. 12, 1918 in Mathias, a daughter of the late Cornelius Randolph and Lula Elizabeth Sherman Foltz.
She was preceded in death by her first husband. On Dec. 14, 1975 she married Robert R. Johnson, who survives.
Also surviving are five daughters, three sons, 17 grandchildren and then great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Jan. 30 at the First United Methodist Church in Timberville.
Helen Jacobs
Helen E. "Jake" Jacobs, 93, of Dover Pa., formerly of York, Pa., died at 9:50 p.m. Saturday Jan. 20, at her home. She was the wife of the late Floyd L. Jacobs.
She was born Oct. 4, 1913 in Davis, a daughter of the late Edward F. and Chloe (Bodkins) Simmons.
Helen had been a cook for Less's Cafeteria, York, Pa. and later, a jewelry polisher for White Jewelers, York, Pa. She was a member of Dover Bethany U.M. Church, Dover, Pa.
She is survived by two sisters TWila Wolford of Dryfork and Argyle Shank of Harrisonburg, VA.; three brothers Herbert Simmons of Davis, Richard Simmons of Baltimore, Md., and Hoye Simmons of Harman.
Relatives and friends were invited to attend the funeral at 10 a.m. and the viewing from 9-10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 25, at Dover Bethany U.M. Church. Burial followed in Greenmount Cemetery, York, Pa. Officiating was her pastor, the Rev. William Myers. Emig Funeral Home, 47 N. Queen St., Dover, Pa. was in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dover Bethany U.M. Church, 4510 Bull Rd., Dover, Pa. 17315.
Ellen Lawson
Ellen Nelson Griffith Lawson, 80, a former resident of Hambleton, and a resident of the Cortland Acres Nursing Home at Thomas, departed this life Saturday evening, January 27 at the home.
She was born June 5, 1925 at Whitmer, a daughter of the late Delmar and Patsy Elza Nelson. She was twice married, first to Charles R. Griffith, who preceded her in death April 1959 and then she married James Lawson, who preceded her in death October 2006.
Surviving are two daughters; Mary Ellen Mauldin and husband Mack of Hendricks and Sharon Griffith of Morgantown; two brothers Jason Kimber Nelson and wife Pearl Ann of Thomas, Delmar “Junior” Nelson and wife Terry of Akron, Ohio, one sister Patricia Yokum of New Creek, four grandchildren; Ben F. “Buddy” Long and wife Brenda of Holly Meadows, Christy Murray and husband Kevin of Morgantown, Sue Ellen Shrout of Nashville and Kim Snyder and husband James of Parsons and five great grandchildren; Adam Lambruno and Emma Snyder, both of Parsons, Evin Murray of Morgantown, Stephanie Long and Ben F. “Benny” Long, both of Holly Meadows.
Preceding her in death are one infant son; James Daniel Griffith, four brothers; Blake Nelson, Robert Eugene Nelson, Harold Arthur Nelson and James Russell Nelson.
She attended the schools of Whitmer, the schools of Tucker County and was a graduate of Charleston High School with the Class of 1955. She attended Morris Harvey College at Charleston. She retired from the Kroger Company after 25 years of service. She was owner and operator of a pet grooming business while living at Houston, Texas, and she was a real estate agent while a resident of Georgia. She loved to make crafts and was a noted cook. She was a Methodist.

Chester Marshall, Jr. 
Chester A. Marshall Jr., 85, died on Jan. 26. He was born in Albany, N.Y. and moved with his family to West Virginia.
He attended Thomas High School, West Virginia Wesleyan College (BA), West Virginia University (MS) and Indiana University (PhD). A long time teacher and coach, he held positions at Parsons High School, Wilmington College (Ohio) Culver Military Academy and the Indiana Department of Education.
He was a veteran of WWII, earning a Bronze Star while serving on the USS Huse. As captain of his college basketball team at West Virginia Wesleyan, he led a group of returning Veterans in winning the West Virginia State Championships (and was later drafted by the Denver Nuggets). In 1981, he was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Otis Bowen for his years of service to Indiana's youth.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Margaret Ann (Meg) and is survived by his wife of 62 years, Glenda, and children Cynthia (Phil) of New Orleans, Chet III (Kate) of Culver, Elizabeth/Boo (Rob) of New York, Matt (Jean) of Indianapolis and grandchildren Adrian, Claire, Gigi and Aaron.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Chester A. Marshall, Jr. Memorial Fund C/o the Culver Educational Foundation., Culver.
