Shirley Carr
Shirley Woodrow Carr, 90, a resident of Virginia Beach, Va., passed away Feb. 6, in Beacon Shores Nursing Home in Virginia Beach, Va.
He was born July 6, 1915at Hendricks, a son of the late Delbert Howell Carr and Louiessa Carr. He grew up in Thomas where he attended Thomas grade and high schools. He graduated in 1934. In 1936, he was married to Mildred Vengen Carr who resides at Marion Manor, Virginia Beach, Va.
Shirley served in the U.s. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. He then attended Marshall University. He was an agent for Peoples Life Insurance company until he retired. As a young man Shirley was a boy scout leader and Sunday school teacher. He was active in the First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk where he and his wife Mildred prepared communion for 40+ years. Shirley and Mildred established a scholarship fund in memory of his father and grandfather through the Tucker Community Endowment Foundation which continues to grant scholarships to local students for the continuation of their education. He and Mildred established an alumni endowment with the WV University Foundation in memory of Enos, Delbert, Shirley and Mildred Carr.
He is survived by his wife Mildred of Virginia Beach and a niece Melanie Harman.
He was preceded in death by his three sisters Rosemarie Carr, Lorraine Carr and Jeanaleah Seibel.
Visitation is Feb. 10, at the Hinkle Funeral Home from 10 a.m. until the funeral service at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. Jeff Faulter officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery, Thomas, Hinkle Funeral Home, Davis is in charge of arrangements. Lorraine Hedrick
Lorraine Kisner Hedrick died peacefully at her home January 31, after a valiant battle with cancer.
She was a Registered Nurse, Community College teacher and a Drug and Alcohol Therapist before retiring in her seventies.
Born in Cassville June 30, 1924, she grew up on a farm near Parsons. Her parents were the late George Washington Kisner and Hazel Lovada Moats Kisner.
She graduated from Parsons High School with honors and received her Registered Nurse Certification from Capital City School of Nursing in Washington, D.C. At age 60, she graduated from George Mason University with honors with a Bachelor’s of Individual Studies. She then started a graduate program in Psychology at the University of Richmond. She was also inducted into the Parsons High School Hall of Fame.
During World War II and while her husband was in college, she was a Registered Nurse at what is now DC General Hospital. After all of her children were grown, she worked as a RN at Alexandria Hospital. Later she was an instructor at Northern Virginia Community College and a therapist at the Church of the Reformation’s Health Center in Washington, D.C.
In a simple wartime ceremony in February 1945, Mrs. Hedrick married her next-farm neighbor and childhood friend, Robert K. Hedrick. A few days later he was sent to Germany, and they did not see each other for over a year. They had been married for sixty one years.
She leaves behind three children, Robert Kenny Hedrick Jr. and his partner, Walter Huxley, of San Francisco, Calif., Ronald Dean Hedrick and wife Teresa of Williamsburg, Va., and Patti Lingafelt and husband Charles of Alexandria, Va.; three brothers, Wincle Kisner and wife Lola of Jackson, Mich., Kenneth Kisner and wife Margueret of Omaha, Neb. and Clair Ksner and wife Geraldine of Manitow Beach, Mich. She also leaves behind six grandchildren, Wendy Sandella and husband Scott, Amy Hedrick, Charles Robert Lingafelt, Claire Lingafelt, Matthew Hedrick and Christopher Hedrick; two great-grandchildren, Miranda Mumford and Mallory Mumford; and four step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother Bobby Kisner and one sister, Marjorie Watson.
Mrs. Hedrick was an extremely focused individual who did not accept the status quo. She was a constant fighter for what she thought was right.
Mrs. Hedrick and her husband were members of the Lutheran Church of the Reformation in Washington, D.C.
The family received friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Friday, Feb. 3, 2006, from 11 a.m. until noon, the funeral hour. The Rev. Dr. Wanda McNeill officiated and interment followed at Bethel Cemetery at Holly Meadows. Lohr & Barb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Lorraine Kisner Hedrick. Frank Johnson
Frank Edward Johnson of Farmington passed away on Dec 22 at Camelot Nursing Home Center at the age of 95 years.
He was born on Feb. 4, 1910 in Hendricks, the son of the late Cornelius and Maude Johnson.
He is survived by two sisters Barbara Quattro of Davis, June Lohmaier of Rochester, New York and special friends, the Tom Starnes family, also several nieces and nephews.
A gravesite service with military honors was conducted at Jefferson Barracks Cemetery in St. Louis on Friday, Dec. 30 at 11:30 a.m. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Cozean Funeral Home.
Fred Pratt
Fred J. Pratt, 92, of Clifton Drive, Oakland, Md. formerly of Kitzmiller, died Sunday, Jan. 29 at his home, surrounded by his family and caregivers.
Born on Oct. 7, 1913 in Weaver, he was the son of the late Michael and Josephine (Pascuzzi) Pratt. He was also preceded in death by his wife Jennie T. (Avona) Pratt in 1993; a brother Augustus Pratt; a son -in-law Franklin g. finch; and a granddaughter Kelly Jo Pratt.
From 1929 until 2003, he was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Kitzmiller and from 2003, he was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Oakland, Md. He was baptized at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Coalton and as a teenager he helped lay the cornerstone of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. A retired coal miner, he was a member of Local 1444 UMWA, Bayard, He was an avid fisherman, gardener and outdoorsman who greatly loved his fmaily and friends.
He is survived by one daughter Rosalee E. Finch, Oakland; two sons, Frederick M. Pratt, Oakland, and Paul J. Pratt, Swanton; two sisters Ethel Lease, Cresaptown and Mary Barrett, Tallmadge, Ohio; five brothers Thomas Pratt, Cresaptown, Dominic Pratt, Swanton, Carl Pratt, Brandywine, Michael Pratt, Romulus, Mich. and Louis G. Pratt, Cresaptown; six grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, 32 S. Second St., Oakland from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Oakland on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Fr. Don Parson as celebrant. Interment was was in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Thomas. A Christian Wake Service was conducted at the funeral Home on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Family requests that memorials take the form of contribution to the Hospice of Garrett County, P.O. box 271, Oakland, Md., 21550 or to the House of Hope, 2002 s. fourth St., Oakland, MD 21550.
Glenn Rhodes ![]()
Glenn Harris "Dusty" Rhodes, 81, of Davis, passed away Feb. 6 at the VA Hospital in Pittsburgh.
He was born Oct. 14, 1924 in Elk Garden, a son of the late Henry Harrison and Laura Alta Paugh Rhodes. He was never married.
He is survived by two brothers Edward "Charles" Rhodes of Clarksburg and Joe Rhodes of Charlottesville, Va.; two sisters Marcella Paugh of Elk Garden and Cora Barlow of Tunnelton.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
Mr. Rhodes was a laborer and former Town of Davis employee. He was US Army WWII Veteran. He was a member of American Legion Post 071, Oakland, Md. and FOE 936 of Davis. Dusty enjoyed hunting and really enjoyed fishing. He was a Protestant by faith.
Friends will be received at Hinkle Funeral Home on Wednesday, Feb. 8, from 4 until 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Feb.9 at Hinkle Funeral Chapel at 1 p.m. with Rev. Eli Hostetler officiating. Interment will follow in the Elk Garden Cemetery. Hinkle Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
