Roy Bohon

Roy Wesley Bohon, 69, a former resident of St. George and a resident of Terra Alta, departed this life early Saturday morning, Feb. 24, 2007, at his home. He had been in declining health.

He was born Sunday, Aug. 7, 1936, at Aurora, a son of the late Mack Bohon and Ethel Moats Bohon.  On Nov. 8, 1958, at Oakland, Md., he was married to the former Hulda Plum “Susie” Bohon, who survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Debra Bohon Simons of St. George; one brother, Glen Bohon of Aurora; one granddaughter, Renea Rayo Ross of St. George; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were one brother, Russell Bohon; and three sisters, Ruby Lipscomb, Sarah Virginia Pifer and Mary Rinehart.

He attended the schools of Tucker and Preston counties. He was a chain saw operator by trade, was an avid outdoorsman and loved gardening.

The family received friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Tuesday, Feb. 27 from 5 to 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007 at 2 p.m. Pastor Pat Cassidy will officiate and interment will follow in Fairview II Cemetery on Location Road at St. George.  The Lohr & Barb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Roy Wesley Bohon. Phyllis Friend 

Phyllis Friend, 80, of Vermillion, Ohio died Friday, Feb. 2 at Community Health Partners in Lorain, following a two-month illness. 

She was born Feb. 26, 1926, in Elk Garden and had lived in Vermilion for more than 50 years, moving from Lorain.   

She had worked at the South Shore Packing Co. in Vermilion as an olive packer , and was a former Sunday School teacher at Harbourtown Foursquare Gospel Church.  She enjoyed country music, gardening and feeding the birds. 

She was preceded in death by her parents Harry B. and Eva Ellen (nee Shirley) Roy. 

The family received friends on Monday, Feb. 5 at the Riddle Funeral Home, Vermilion, Ohio from 5 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 7 p.m.  The Rev. Jim Cooper, pastor of Harbourtown Community Church officiated.  Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Thomas at a later date.  Memorial contributions may be made to Harbourtown Community Church, 873 State ST., Vermilion, Ohio 44089.  

Neil Gutshall

Coach Neil Austin Gutshall, 80, a well known Coach and Educator of Parsons, departed this life Wednesday evening, Feb. 21, at Monongalia General Hospital at Morgantown.

He was born Monday, Sept. 6, 1926 at Norton, a son of the late Ellis M. Gutshall and Louvella Armstrong Gutshall.  On Aug. 4, 1947 at Elkins, he was married to the former Julia “Judy” Volitis Gutshall, who survives. They celebrated sixty years of marriage.

Also surviving are four sons, Robert N. Gutshall and wife Deborah of Parsons, David Gutshall and wife Donna of Spartanburg, S.C., Tom Gutshall and wife Susie of Parsons and Gary Gutshall and wife Cindy of Fredericksburg, Va.; two sisters, Mary Skinner and husband Robert and Martha Tallman and husband Ray, all of Elkins; six grandchildren, Carridy Gutshall Bender and husband Mike, David Gutshall, Jessica Gutshall, Laura Gutshall, Ashley Gutshall and Chelsea Gutshall.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, The Rev. Meade L. Gutshall, Mervin L. Gutshall and Louie Gutshall.

He was a graduate of Coalton High School with the Class of 1944, where he was on the basketball team from 1940-1944. He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II. He played one year on the Fort Knox Post Team during 1945. He attended Potomac State College from 1947-1949, where he played basketball and football from 1947-1948.  He was a graduate of Davis & Elkins College with the class of 1951, where he also played basketball from 1949-1951. He played on the Senator team in N.I.T. tournament in Kansas City during 1950. He had coached in McDowell County during 1951-1956. He was coach for Parsons High School football, basketball and baseball teams from 1956-1978. He was Athletic Director and retired from coaching in 1978. His basketball record: 314 wins, 134 losses; football record; 101 wins, 48 losses and three ties. Parsons High School went to State Basketball Tournament 3 times, 5 regional runners-up teams, 11 sectional titles and 4 conference championships. He was assistant football coach for Tucker County High School from his retirement until 1999.  Coach Gutshall received many honors during his coaching career: Tri-Valley Coach of the Year 1958-1960, Area Coach of the Year in 1960, Retired High School Coach of the Year 1985. He was honored at the Coaches All-Star Football Game during 1991, the Randolph County Athletic Hall of Fame, the Potomac State College-Athletic Hall of Fame during 1992 and Davis & Elkins College-Athletic Hall of Fame during 1994. Not only was Coach excellent in sports, he was very well loved as a teacher from 1951 thru 1999 and received many teaching honors. He was Tucker County Teacher of the Year in 1981 and a finalist for the West Virginia Teacher of the Year in 1981. He received the honor of Tucker County Outstanding Educator during 1980. Coach Gutshall organized the Parsons Little League Baseball Program and he was Sports & Swimming Director of the Crippled Children’s Camp for 12 years. He taught golf at Holly Meadows Golf Club and gymnastics for the youth at the Old Parsons High School. Coach being a fifty year plus resident of Tucker County, his outstanding accomplishments have included his family, teaching, coaching careers and personal contributions to the young men and women in the entire community.

The family received friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Saturday, Feb. 24 from 5 to 9 p.m. Final rites were conducted at the funeral home parlor on Sunday, Feb. 25, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Father Timothy Grassi and the Rev. Jeff Anderson officiated and interment followed in Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman, where H.W. Daniels Post #29 American Legion presented the American Flag. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to Tucker County High School Football and Basketball, Tucker County High School, Route 1, Box 153, Hambleton, W.Va. 26269. Denton Keller

Denton Howard Keller, 66, a lifelong resident of the Mill Run community, St. George, went home to be with the Lord early Monday morning, Feb. 19, 2007 at his home. He had been in declining health and death was attributed to heart failure.

He was born Wednesday, Oct. 16, 1940, at St. George, a son of the late Roy Mack Keller and Freda Olive Knotts Keller and his stepmother Mae Bohon Keller of Thomas who survives.  He had never married. 

Surviving are one brother, Denzil Roy Keller and wife Edna Ellen Sinclair Keller of St. George; three step-brothers; Eugene Bohon and wife Ruth of St. George, Erwin Bohon and Lyle Bohon and wife Ellen. step-sister-in-law Virginia Bohon, all of Ohio; two nephews, Denzil R. “Buddy” Keller Jr. and Kevin Dale Keller and wife Denise all of St. George; two nieces, Kathy A. Spitzer and husband Bill of Florida, and Sandra Jean Cassidy and husband John of St. George; and ten great-nieces and great-nephews.

He attended the Saint George Academy. Denton was a skilled knife maker, he enjoyed reading his Bible and talking to people.

The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Wednesday, Feb. 21 from 5 to 8 p.m. Final rites were conducted at the funeral home parlor Thursday, Feb. 22 at 11 a.m. Pastor Carolyn Shreve officiated and interment followed at the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons. Alma Lambruno

Alma Catherine Lambruno, 86, of Douglas, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 14, at her home.

She was born Sept. 4, 1929, at Beryl, a daughter of the late Samuel Russ and Rosie Catherine Lipscomb Davis.  She was married first to Arlie Davis Sr., whom she married on Sept. 4, 1937, and second to Anthony D. Lambruno on Oct. 3, 1959, who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Arlie C. and wife Kathryn Davis of Blackman Flats; one daughter Karen and husband Gene Bishop of Marion, Ohio; one sister Sarah Shillingburg of Calif.; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, two sisters and one granddaughter.

Alma retired in 1980 after 25 years working as Postmaster of the Thomas post office. She was a member of the National Association of Postmasters, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and a member and elder at the First Presbyterian Church of Thomas.

Friends were received at Hinkle Funeral Home on Saturday, Feb. 17 from 2- 4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services were helde Sunday, Feb. 18 at the Hinkle Funeral Chapel at 2 p.m. with the Rev. John Morrison officiating. Interment follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Thomas. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mt. Hospice, 1600 Crim Ave., Belington, W.Va. 26250.  

Grace W. Swink

Grace Wellington Ryan Swink, 93, a resident of Parsons and a resident of Elkins Regional Convalescent Center of Elkins, departed this life Saturday evening, Feb. 24 at the center.

She was born Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1913, at Parsons, a daughter of the late William H. Ryan and Sarah Gilbert Ryan.  On Feb. 14, 1933, she was married to Frank William Swink, who preceded her in death April 1, 1976.

Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Donna Swink of Summit, Ky.; cousins, Dwight Dudley and wife Shirley, Dwight David Dudley and wife Paula and Todd Christopher Dudley and wife Lisa, all of Huntington. 

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family having been preceded in death by one son Gary Ryan Swink; one daughter Sue Ann Swink, who died at the age of five; and one brother William Ryan.

Grace was a member of First United Methodist Church of Parsons. She was a graduate of Parsons High School with the Class of 1931. She was employed with the Federal Prison Service. She was a former member of Tucker County Senior Center Chorus and was past treasurer for Tucker County Alumni Association. She was a life member of Parsons Chapter #91 Order of the Eastern Star.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Thursday, March 1 from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m., the funeral hour. The Parsons Chapter #91 Order of the Eastern Star will conduct ritualistic services prior to the funeral at 12.45 p.m. Pastor Allen Dale Crosten of First Baptist Church of Parsons will officiate and interment will follow in Parsons City Cemetery.

Pallbearers will include Dwight David Dudley, Todd Christopher Dudley, Paul David Dudley, Bobby Phillips, Marvin “Bud” Parsons and Mike Nelson. The family offers thanks to the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center for their tenderness and excellence of care extended to Grace and also offers thanks to her many kind and dear friends.
